I shall now end all doubt to his name. It is NOT "Zolo".

Do note that the Wanted posters look exactly like this in the RAW.

Sorry, I just needed to finally clear this up.
I know that "Rs" and "Ls" are interchangeable in Japanese, but Oda has several names that are specific in it. This is one.

You mean those ignorant people that think the manga is too inappropriate?
Or those even more ignorant who look forward to watching the dub and have "Zolo" water tatoos and sing in the theme song daily.

Hah, interesting, Wingzero. XD

The latter as well as those who don't like One Piece and think the "R/L" rule applies when something is spelled in ENGLISH.

A little nasty toward those who like the dub here, aren't we? I personally don't care (don't like One Piece in any flavor), but...

Possibly. It's more that a certain someone(s) was having a "discussion" with me that "Zolo" and Zoro were the same, so I just decided to show everyone the truth. :p

Granted. But has anyone here on CAA ever argued with you about the spelling of the name? I recall a few people who stated the l=r rule and then agreed after this type of evidence, but I don't remember any real argument.

Not really an "argument", but it happened a couple of times in the chat. I just decided to go ahead clear up things (before I went crazy from it XD ).

I remember posting a different picture from...a One Piece special, I think, where his name was written as "Zoro". While I'm sure many people are aware that l = r, when you have hard proof from the original source, it'd be silly to argue against it. =3

I'm pretty sure that his name isn't written in Romanji. So this is a silly argument.

At some points in the manga names are written in English characters. The artist also stated he chose "Zoro" as an allusion to the swordsman. So in this case there is a clear answer.

To clarify, that was essentially what I meant. Some people mentioned the rule, then agreed with the "Zoro" spelling after seeing the other evidence.

Heh. I'll bet at the bottom of this is the Hiragana in a Japanese translated version of "Zorro".

There is a fascinating story behind the character name "Belldandy" in OMG. She is supposed to be a Norse goddess. It is a wonderful name, but it isn't really Nordic in any way.

It turns out that the original name, depending on the language, was "Verthanthir" or "Verdhandi", who, in Norse Mythology is one of the three Norns. Along with her sisters Urdu and Skuld, she controls fate. But Verdhandi doesn't very easily fit into Japanese mouths, so the hiragana was done as "Berudaandi" (If you listen to OMG in Japanese, this is clearly what they are calling her.) Later, when the artist wanted to write her name in Romanji, he decided that "Verdhandi" didn't look anything like what his readers expected to see, so he came up with "Belldandy". Arguably, he didn't change her name. If a Japanese speaker tries to pronounce either "Verdhandi" or "Belldandy", roughly the same sound is going to come out of his mouth.
May the Lord bless you and keep you.
May He cause His face to shine upon you.
May He lift up His countenance and grant you peace.

He is just giving EVIDENCE as to why it has to be "Zoro" and not "Zolo". Because L and R are interchangable in most asian languages.

I think 4Kids changed it to "Zolo" as to avoid any conflict with the people from Zorro's (ie; Antonio Banderas) camp.

In any case, it's silly to be arguing over stuff like this. Go devot your time to something more important.

Indeed. Tis my point here. :D

I'm pretty sure that his name isn't written in Romanji. So this is a silly argument.

I stated at the beginning that the RAW is the same way, spelled with our letters. I just didn't post a pic from one (but will gladly do so if asked).

I did crop this, but no, there was nothing like that on the page.

Yeah, I guess it doesn't really, but I've just heard alot of people say stuff like, so I wanted to verify what it really it is (none of this would matter if it weren't for you-know-who screwing the show up -_- ).

Dude, if ANYONE knew the correct name before anyone else on the face of the planet, it's myoti.

Actually, there's probably about a hundred/thousand who knew before me back on the Arlong Park (OP) forums. ^-^;

He is just giving EVIDENCE as to why it has to be "Zoro" and not "Zolo". Because L and R are interchangable in most asian languages.

YES! He gets it! Thank you!
*hugs Ryan*

I think 4Kids changed it to "Zolo" as to avoid any conflict with the people from Zorro's (ie; Antonio Banderas) camp.

I know, but there's plenty of times where characters from different books/shows had similar names and they didn't bother with it, and as I've said before, "Zorro" is just "fox" in Spanish, so that doesn't really hold up much with "licensing" stuff. :/

In any case, it's silly to be arguing over stuff like this. Go devot your time to something more important.

You're right.

What's the big deal? You still have your fansubs and scans. I can understand not liking the One Piece dub, but it's ONE LETTER in a character's name that's been altered. There are worse things.

Like Luffy's voice.

I don't understand why people complain about things they hate. You're just bringing more attention to something. If you don't like it, ignore it and it will go away.

It'd be so much better if One Piece fans stopped complaining about how bad the dub is. We know it is, there's no point in constantly bringing up the same topic. Just forget about it.

Great. I feel like a complete and utter n00b now...

Yes, I know of these other problems. I could list all of them as well, but I'm sure no one here really cares.

And no, I don't have fansubs (though I wish I did), but the point is that One Piece is a GREAT series, but thanks to how it was treated, too few want to actually believe that.

I see like this: you hear of this show, you see it, it's great. You hear they'll be bringing it over to your home country, where more people can enjoy it. You're happy, but when it comes, it gets destroyed. You're fine since you still have access to the original, but now everyone judges it thanks to how it was treated, so no one wants to talk about/watch it like you.

Or in another light, let's say I make a story, alot of people like it, someone says they'll make it into a show for you. They do, but they change everything in it till it is no longer your story, and looks like a big joke.

Listen, I usually DO NOT complain about dubs of any kind. EVER. But I fell in love with this particular show, and when I heard how much was changed, yeah, I wasn't too happy.

Giant Robo done by 4Kids, Impact. Think about that.

I don't want this to turn into an argument, I just want to tell what the creators' original intent was.

Oh, okay, that's easy for YOU to say, since uncut Japanese language versions of YOUR favorite anime, Kenshin, are available. But imagine if 4Kids got a hold of Kenshin and gave Kenshin a rubber sword, got rid of his scar, gave him a voice like Ash from Pokemon, and we'll see how loud YOU would complain.

It's so easy to fault other people for something YOU have never gone through, isn't it?

Wouldn't bother me. Giant Robo has a three-episode parody of itself, the Ginrei OVA.

It's fine that you like One Piece, and I'm sorry that 4Kids messed it up, but life will go on. It's just anime.

I think we should be more concerned about or faith. While it is probably a controversial point to bring up, I see a lot of really bad translation of the Bible that deviate very much from what the original texts say. Isn't thatwhat we need to be worried about?

Again, we have our likes and interests, but let's not take them too seriously. It's just anime. Not life.

I understand, Kae...I apologize for offending anyone..and when I posted that I hadn't read Myoti's last post..

I didn't mean to cause a problem...it's just some people can only take what they can get...you know? I mean I don't have a lot of money to buy a lot of anime...and If I can watch something for free, doggonnit I will watch whatever version I can! ^_^

Sorry to offend anyone..but we all understand that you don't lke the OP dub...but making posts like this...is tiresome...we see your point...the L doesn't allways equal R.

Yes, thank you! As long as this has been seen, then the point of this is done.

And yes, there are more important things in the world, things that am involved in. But like Kae said, it's a problem to US, the fans, and if Oda knew, I'm sure it'd be a problem to him as well (I'd find it odd if he wasn't o_o ).

Guys, let's be sure to remain civil. I can understand disappointment over misteatment of series, such as the dropping of honorifics and the Americanizing of names-- but it seems like threads like these get heated far too fast. I understand when people want to explain the problems with a translation, yet we don't seem like we can convey many of our differences without becoming offended and taking other people's differing opinions as personal slights. Let's all try to be loving, even in our disagreements, okay?
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

Obviously, I agree with Mangafanatic. In addition, I would urge all of us to consider what really is worth disagreeing about (especially since no one really disagrees on this thread).

I know it was based off "Zorro", but his name is indeed written as "Zoro".

This is why I shouldn't make posts while very rushed. I meant to say "Zoro" there but was thinking about something else and put "Zolo." I read One Piece in Shonen Jump before they made the change, so I've never thought about him as Zolo. Simply a terrible error on my part.

Impact Alberto wrote:I think we should be more concerned about or faith. While it is probably a controversial point to bring up, I see a lot of really bad translation of the Bible that deviate very much from what the original texts say. Isn't thatwhat we need to be worried about?

I'd ask that no one go into details on this (as that certainly could get controversial) but the point stands nonetheless. There are a lot of things that are more important, and while that doesn't mean everything else doesn't matter, it should put things like one letter into perspective.
