Urban Myth debunking

Postby Bobtheduck » Wed Nov 05, 2003 2:58 am

I know there's allready a TV show for this, but the show doesn't cover nearly as much territory and offer the backup for all of it...

http://www.snopes.com

This is great... Not for those of you who like your scary tales and punchy revenge stories left as is... But those of you upset at people and company's reputations being tainted by stupid widely believed rumors (http://www.snopes.com/horrors/food/kfc.htm) as well as spreading paranoia that's even worse (http://www.snopes.com/business/alliance/barcode.asp) you should check this out...

Man, I get tired of hearing "Well, you know why they call it KFC, right?"

I need to print that one out...

I was naturally skeptical of sites that supposedly expose "myths" that is obviously secular, but i haven't found anything anti-christian in the site... References to evolution, and the natural things that surround urban legends... So yeah... Check it out...

Look up the tooth story in the coca-cola... another rediculous myth that people preach as the dangers of soft drinks...

Snopes is a very good site and compulsively organized. Their veracity has been confirmed again and again for defeating baloney (oops, sorry, bologna ... I should have learned something from my trip ;) ).

Yes, I like snopes.com (I didn't know there was a TV show!) I also like http://www.truthorfiction.com. Both very good hoax blasters...;)

Legend: There is a snopes TV show that shows up mysteriously on some channel than no one has seen!

Status: False

inkhana wrote:Yes, I like snopes.com (I didn't know there was a TV show!)

Origins: It seems that small errors in written communication can cause all sorts of misunderstandings. This is the case in the legend of the snopes TV show. It took some research to find the origins of this one, but it seems to date back to a statement in a message board post:

" wrote:I know there's allready a TV show for this, but the show doesn't cover nearly as much territory and offer the backup for all of it...

Mr Theduck, in an interview with Joe Boo, had this to say about the situations... "Well, my sig really stems from the fact I am as put off by trolls as MillyFan is..." and would say no more...

It seems the real meaning of this original statement was a reference to an urban legend revealing TV show that shares a similar purpose with snopes. Oh, what a little misunderstanding in communication can do...

A great thing in this is all the celebrities or sub-celebrities that people think died... Like the original Mikey from Life cereal (still alive, and pop rocks+cola does NOT make you explode! But, that you would have learned on the Urban Myth show on MTV)

The show isn't always accurate, either. As their 'debunking' of the 'dead ringer' myth proves. They sorta left out that in england in the midle ages people were only burried a few feet under ground, not 6...

well, Snopes doesn't have a 100% clear record either, their newlywed game thing showed that, but they corrected the error later when they learned the truth. You can't trust humans to be 100% right... But, snopes does seem meticulously researched...

My friend just sent me a "warning" that was false, once again... The "Gay Jesus" film is fake, it doesn't exist and is not being made, and online petitions carry no weight...

That's why these sorts of things are very needed... Though they don't cover very many of another type of hoax, and that's virus hoaxes... For that, you have to check symantec and mcafee...

If you're gonna be scared out of your mind, make it some movie or book you get really into and then, well, "out of" when you're done...

I can't believe I missed this post... this has been one of my pet peeves for a long time (checking sources).

Man, I get tired of hearing "Well, you know why they call it KFC, right?"

I used to deliver pizzas for a Pizza Hut/KFC/Taco Bell store in the area, and a friend of mine sent that one to me (she's one of the worst for sending stuff w/o checking, i.e. - Harry Potter, Onion article).

I replied back that I hope someone had told Bud's Poultry, the company who supplies them the chicken at that store (I guess they use local/regional private companies to supply most of the chicken).

Good find Bob :thumb: (thumbs up to you too Ink for TruthorFiction.com as well).

I found an article that I don't believe entirely, though...

http://www.snopes.com/spoons/oldwives/hairgrow.asp

I've got two biological brothers.

I have no chest hair.
My oldest brother has no chest hair.

Quite a few years ago, my middle brother wanted chest hair really badly. He shaved it for a decent amount of time, and now his chest is very hairy. Also, I didn't grow ANY facial hair until I started to shave my blonde peach fuzz regularly. Every time I did, I'd get more growing back. So, I think they were wrong about this one.

Eew what? Chest hair? Chest hair on a guy isn't ew. I just don't want any and I'm glad it's not Genetic. Unless you mean the shaving part. All I"m saying was that it worked. He's a mountain man now, and he can't get a job as a model! ^_^ (that may have more to do with his flab than his forest, though)

I just think that this is wrong. It may not be the case FOREVER but shaving will start hair growing where there wasn't before (such as if you shave your face early, you'll grow facial hair early, and men with genetically bare chests can have hair there by shaving too) Also, it is true that every time I shave consistantly, I get more facial hair and that when I stop shaving, I stop getting new facial hair.

No, I mean the shaving part. That just sounds painful.

Well... I can think of loads of painfull things showoffy guys do when they are desperate for something...

Along those same lines, the same goes for women... (waxing, plucking, tatooing, piercing, electrolysis... )

I'd never do any of it... I just don't enjoy pain... That's probably why I don't like sports.
