Tenchi canon?

Can someone tell me the appropriate canonical order of the Tenchi series? My boyfriend really liked it when he was younger, but now that he's wanting to start watching it again, we have no idea where to start. The Tenchi universe can be REALLY confusing for a newcomer.

Well, there is not really a set order for Tenchi other then OVA's and movies.

But here is order on which ones are in a group.

Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki OAV

Tenchi Muyo! The Night Before The Carnival OVA

Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki OAV 2

Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki OAV 3



Tenchi Universe, is an alternate retelling of Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki OVA's and is a TV series

Tenchi Muyo Movie 1: Tenchi in Love ( a sequel to Tenchi Universe)

Tenchi Muyo Movie 3: Tenchi Forever (a sequel of Tenchi Muyo Movie 1: Tenchi in Love)




Tenchi in Tokyo, is another alternate retelling of Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki OVA's and is a TV series.




Now bear with me on this.

Tenchi Muyo Movie 2: Daughter of Darkness, I heard that it was a sequel of Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki OVA, but it has Kiyone in it and there is no Kiyone in the first and 2rd OVA's and in the 3rd OVA, Kiyone's name is said, but its not the same Kiyone from the movies or Tenchi Universe and Tenchi in Tokyo.

So, I guess you can put the movie 2 between the first movie and the Tenchi Muyo Movie 3.




Tenchi Muyo! Mihoshi Special is a spinoff of Tenchi Muyo! OVA, but you don't have to watch it as you will not get lost or help you understand anymore of OVA out of it.



Tenchi Muyo! GXP is another spinoff of Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki OVA's



Magical Girl Pretty Sammy (aka: Magical Project S) is just another spinoff from Tenchi family.

There is no Tenchi Muyo series, only the OVA's and the two tv series, which would be Tenchi Universe and Tenchi in Tokyo.

Sorry about that. I know that I wasn't too clear on what I said and I had to run out the door. because I had class today.

The OVA's have been called Tenchi Muyo!, but the real name for the OVA's is Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki

Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki was six eps OVA (this is the one with the storyline on how Tenchi met, Ryoko, Ayeka, Sasami, Mihoshi and Washu and the battle with Kagato. )

Tenchi Muyo! The Night Before The Carnival OVA (the storyline was after a few days from the battle with Kagato.

Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki OVA 2 was six eps. (the storyline had Lady Tokimi and Dr. Clay in it and give us more details on Sasami, Washu, and Ryo-ohke and introducing Zero, Emperor Azusa, Lady Funaho and Lady Misaki)

Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki OVA 3 is six eps and the newest one out. (the storyline started where OAV 2 series left off, Lady Tokimi dispatches the warrior Z to Earth to learn more about Tenchi.)



Tenchi Universe is a 26 ep TV series. The start of this one was Tenchi meets Ryoko first and then the rest of the women.


Tenchi in Tokyo is a 26 ep TV series. Where all six women live with him areadly, but he plans to move to Tokyo for a normal life. When he goes, we are introduced to girl name Sakuyo.

Its different. Tenchi GXP is just a spinoff from the Tenchi Family and a 26 ep TV series.

There are a few people in Tenchi GXP that are in the new OVA, and you do have a few members that were in the 1st OVA and 2rd OVA that show up in GXP, but its mostly about Seina Yamada and the Galaxy Police force.

Seriously, I was a Tenchi fan back in the day (back when it was on Toonami and dinosaurs still roamed the earth) but I never understood how they related to one another. Very much obliged, 'Zero.

And let's not forget the two manga series. Both are done by the same manga-ka, Hitoshi Okuda. They are called No Need For Tenchi! and All-New Tenchi Muyo!. They both take place in the OVA universe, so Kiyone doesn't show up.

Oh, a fact about Kiyone. In 1994, was the year that Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki OAV 2 and Tenchi Muyo! Mihoshi Special.

Ryo-Ohki OVA 2 came out in the fall, but the Mihoshi Special came out in the spring of that year.

Since the Mihoshi Special was just spinoff of the OVA's and was just a 27 min show to give fans something to watch before Ryo-Ohki OVA 2 came out.

Anyway, the story starts as Mihoshi falls asleep on the deck of the house and she dream about her most famous mission with the Galaxy Police and casts all of the Tenchi Muyo characters were in it


In the story, Mihoshi and her GP partner Kiyone race around the galaxy trying to find out who's been stealing all the ultra-energy matter.

Two things to be noted about the Mihoshi Special.

one was the debut of Pretty Sammy and the other as, the only OVA appearence of Kiyone.

Fans really like Kiyone Makibi in Mihoshi Special that they made her full-fledged character in the Tenchi Unverse, Tenchi in Tokyo and the movies.

Also, the english voice for Kiyone was done by Sherry Lynn (aka: Katie Ashley), who also did the voice of Sasami in all OVA's, Universe and the Mihoshi special and two of three of the movies and did the voice of Tsunami in the OVA's.

Sherry Lynn has had a big part in Tenchi family.

She is also a singer and has done english ver songs of,

In 2002 my wife and I visited Okayama and we hiked 2 hrs from the train station, off into the hills to find - Oni no Iwa ya! (Ryoko's Cave.) It is being surrounded and overgrown by a lush and vigorous bamboo forest.

When a fad dies in Japan, it dies forlorn and forgotten. Worse than the Pet Rock. The place had been deserted for quite some time. There had been a temple on the backside of the hill, but that entire structure had been relocated to some other valley.

The terraced paddies were had lain fallow for a few years already and were becoming overgrown with invasive jungle plants. Back in town (there is a small town kalled Kiyone along the way) we couldn't find any Tench souvenirs or mementos. I had thought at LEAST someone would have made Azaka & Kamidake salt and pepper shakers for sale. But no. All gone

Well, hard to say. But I did a little checking and Masaki Kajishima, who was the Original creator of Tenchi Muyo OVA's.

So, the only thing that I know that he did not recognized was Magical Project S and Magical Girl Pretty Sammy OVA.

Hiroki Hayashi was the Original Concept for Magical Project S and Supervising Director number 2 and Story Concept for Magical Girl Pretty Sammy OVA.

Hiroki Hayashi was the director for Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki OVA (the first OVA).

From what I have read the original OVA is supposed to be the best of all the Tenchis excluding the manga.
