So--fans of Jin'e from Rurouni Kenshin...

Postby JasonPratt » Fri Sep 22, 2006 6:38 am

...would anyone here happen to be interested in (or know about already) the LIVE ACTION MOVIE featuring the (I think more-or-less historical) character upon whom Jin'e was based?

(Even better, it co-stars Toshiro Mifune as a good-guy, though I don't recall them ever fighting really. Possibly it was intended for the sequel--I understand there was a series of these movies made, but so far I've only found the first one released for English.)

It's a lot like watching the Trust/Betryal OVA, except giving what is (in essence) Jin'e's backstory instead of Kenshin's.

Ooh, that's pretty cool. :D The Jin'e mini-arc was one of my favorites, and it was really those two episodes that sucked me into the series for good. :)

Hmm, maybe, if he looks like Jin'e... XD
Heart of Sword's Rhapsody

Money, get away
Get a good job with good pay and you're okay
And all and all you're just another brick in the wall
Shoutin’ in the street gonna take on the world some day
But Bismallah will not let me go
Because I'll see you on the dark side of the moon

Tommy used to work on the docks
Union's been on strike
Bright eyes burning like fire
And exposing every weakness
However carefully hidden by the kids

Who will love a little Sparrow
Who's traveled far and cries for rest
Spare him his life from this monstrosity

I've seen a million faces and I've rocked them all
And if the band youre in starts playing different tunes
We will we will rock you
We will we will rock you!

Yes, he looks like Jin'e at least once in the film. (Keeping in mind that in both the main series and Reflections, Jin'e looks rather non-oriental.)

There is one scene in the movie in particular, which is _classic_ Kurogasa (Black hat): a bunch of assassins are shuffling down a snowy night street, trying to sneak up on their prey while still being inconspicuous, and meanwhile he's just walking cooly up the street with that hat on, a black silouhette on snow.

Plus, when he goes crazy and starts killing off his Shinsengumi comrades at an inn, his eyes go kind of buggy... {g} (Okay, that may not quite count. It's the _story_ where the parallels are obvious, especially toward the end.)

Now that I think of it, you'd think there's a chance Saito or Okita would have at least a cameo near the end (I don't know which squad Jin'e was supposed to have been a part of--maybe the 2nd one? {g}) But they may factor as characters into the sequel.

Meanwhile, I am reminded by a note on my desk (i.e. to find the movie if I can) that... ah, another thread topic. {g}

PS: while neither Okita nor Saito seem to be in the movie, the leaders of the other squad of Shinsengumi (Kondo and the corrupt Serizawa whom Kondo kills and replaces) do make appearances, according to the imdb credit list. Kondo is the one who is played by Mifune in the Shinsengumi film he himself produced, which I mentioned in the next thread.

"Jin'e"'s real name in the film is Ryunosuke Tsukue. The film is based on what seems to be the second-longest novel in Japan, and was originally intended to be the first of a film trilogy. (I recall hearing the other films _were_ made, but can't turn up any information on that now. It's been a couple of years since I bought the film, though I think it's been re-released by Criterion recently, the company who distributes Kurosawa's films in the US.)

"All of Christian life is ceaseless worship of God the Father, through the mediatorship of God the Son, by the indwelling power of God the Spirit, doing what God commands in Scripture, not doing what God forbids in Scripture, in culturally contextualized ways, for the furtherance of the Gospel, when both gathered for adoration, and scattered for action, in joyous response to God's glorious grace."
- Mark Driscoll

"Believers do not pray with the view of informing God about things unknown to Him, or of exciting Him to do His duty, or of urging Him as though He were reluctant. On the contrary, they pray in order that they may arouse themselves to seek Him, that they may exercise their faith in meditating on His promises, that they may relieve themselves from their anxieties by pouring them into His bosom; in a word, that they may declare that from Him alone they hope and expect, both for themselves and for others, all good things."

And the answer is:

_Sword of Doom_.

I'll post up a new thread for answering the question, too, along with some more info about the film.
