Life before anime

Postby Puguni » Tue Aug 08, 2006 3:37 pm

Anyone recall what your life was like before you got into anime? Actually, I'm sure everyone can remember, but still, I never really stop to think about it.

I remember watching cartoons a lot, but that was when I was in 4th grade. That's about it.XD

I guess this is more of a thread for the senior members. ^_^

I remember getting beaten up a lot at school and most of my friends leaving me... life before anime was not good. Yay anime!

I was a fetus. =] My grandma watched a lot of Japanese TV, and I watched stuff like My Neighbor Totoro a lot. Before I was REALLY into it I was still sorted into the geek demographic, though, so things aren't too different now. XD

Hmmm, interesting question. I was really into books more than anything else (I'm still an avid reader) and when I got an idea for a story, I thought "novel" not "potential manga idea." I also thought most animation--save Pixar, whom I greatly admired--was childish and just not funny. I was one of those rare kids that didn't find Tom and Jerry hilarious, so I didn't really enjoy cartoons much. I also had next to no dealings with the internet. Oh, how things have changed.

Well, when I grew up in California I had the opportunity to watch Astro Boy, Amazing Three, Gigantor and Kimba. This of course was mixed in with my general obsession with cartoons. Whenever I visit with my mom she will always remember the times of my childhood (particularly on Saturday mornings) when I would lay in front of the TV in my PJs watching cartoons. This basically grew into my continued joy of watching anime.

But it really bugs my wife that on Saturday mornings I'm still lay on the floor in front of the TV in my PJs watching "cartoons." :dizzy:

I remember!
Lol it was sorta funny....
I was verry lonely and proud.
I most of spent my time daydreaming and watching PBS kids.
I thought anime was evil and everything that had anything to do with it was from satan and that DragonballZ was the most evil and demon possessed thing ever.... LOL
Whatever... lol

It was all about Archie comics, Modesty Blaise, and Disney.

It's actually pretty scary (except for MB).

Life before anime involved more books, less friends, less fun, less pretty things around my room. Less of me being the energetic, bouncy, happy person to be around. Life before anime on the whole was good. But I'm glad to have anime now.

Mostly, though, I'm glad for the friends that got me into anime. For without them, I would be nothing like I am today.

I remember easily. It was around July 2004 that I became interested in anime. (For manga April 2000). I was into Tintin, Calvin and Hobbes and stuff like that, I still am.
Anime/manga isn't my life, but I do enjoy a quality version of either.

What was life before anime? I read a lot of Star Wars books, fantasy books. I didn’t watch TV because there was nothing on that I liked, except for the History Channel. Mostly I was an introverted geek, though that still hasn’t changed. I just found some friends who also liked Japanese cultural imports.
I would not mind you in my head, if you were not so clearly mad.

My brother on discovering that I got my little sister addicted to anime
brother: Your turning Jennifer into a geek.
Me: You are also a geek, you just happen to be good at hiding it.
brother: No I’m not, I just happen to like Star Wars.
Me: Alright, how many squadrons of fighters does a Star Destroyer carry?
brother: Is it a Victory, or a Imperial Class destroyer?
*long pause*
brother: I think I just proved your point.

I like Archie comics too. I didn't really watch many cartoons, but one day my brothers turned on digimon and I really liked it. Life before anime consisted of stuffed animals and barbie dolls.

Hmmm. It wasn't actually all that long ago, on the scale of things. I read alot, loved sci-fi, fiddled with computers alot, and was generally considered a geek. I also hated anime because all I saw was the Sailor Moon stuff my sister watched (Don't hurt me! I was a teen and I thought it was dumb, partially because my sister loved it and partially because Sailor Moon isn't my thing), and Pokemon. It was the Final Fantasy games that changed my mind, FF VIII was great (still a favorite) and I realized Japanese stuff wasn't all that bad, then realized I liked some anime. I haven't changed much, although geek has morphed into "typical engineer", and I now include watching anime with my other hobbies.

I had more of a life.

=P

But... anime has been a catalyst in inspiring me to get into interpreting someday. (A ludicrously high paying career)

So, I guess life with anime really is much better!

Before I really got into anime, I was really into stuff like Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, and video games (namely, The Legend of Zelda and Final Fantasy, though I did love many others). XD But I'm pretty sure it was the Japanese video games and the art style they were drawn in that got me into anime. Since I've been drawing for a long time, I drew the "anime" style all the time, without really knowing of any shows other than DBZ, Trigun, and Pokemon. I really got interested in anime after I started playing Kingdom Hearts, actually. XD When I heard the song "Hikari (the Japanese version of Simple and Clean)," I loved it, and I wondered if I would end up getting into those "Japanese shows." "Maybe, maybe not," I thought. Well, one day I caught the first episode of Rurouni Kenshin while I was channel surfing, and the rest is history. XD I don't remember much before that, though, specifically, other than what I mentioned earlier and reading.

Life before Anime huh? Oh the memories, I remember this one time my dad taught me to turn my hair blonde and we went and fought this guy called 'Cell'. Wait that was Dragonball Z. Uh, well there was this one time when I was a loud mouthed ninja. Wait, no, that's Naruto. If memory serves, life before Anime revolved more around writing fiction and such. Now it revolves around writing Fan fiction. Oh how times have changed... in three years.

I...I raised rabbits...lots of rabbits...
I was in 4-H and I showed rabbits and chickens at the fair. That was my hobby. I didn't watch much Anime because Sailor Moon was my intro and I wasn't fond of it. Not to mention my house only gets local stations. I read books so much that they got in the way of my schoolwork sometimes...still do...

Then came Final Fantasy 9. I didn't even know about the rest of the series, but 9 was cool...so I bought 10...that was cool...then Kingdom Hearts...I loved that...Then my brother brought Trigun to my attention...and I was officially hooked.

I got into anime between 12 and 14, about the time we got Sky. Before that I spent most of my time being bored. I liked to read(still do) but good books where I couldn't predict the outcome were hard to find(Now, not so much. Curse you, brain damage!). I mostly watched Marvel cartoons and things like that if they were on. Then the Sci-fi channel showed up with an episode each from two series and a film on Saterday night when I was up at 2AM. Good times.

I think I never really got "into anime", but I started watching anime when I was 4 (Astroy Boy, Galaxy Express 999), so anime has been part of my life on and off. For a while during late primary through to early high school I got into nothing else but read astronomy books and magazines. Alas, all that knowledge has since left me. Instead, it has become filled with thoughts of comics, LEGO, and food.

I am one of those odd people who didn't get into anime into I was in my 40s.
Before that it was mainly the usual Star Trek,Xena,Hercules,Dr.Who,Babylon 5,etc.(all which I still like and enjoy).
As far as animation, well I didn't watch any 'toons except for the annual
Peanuts specials from time to time.
And speaking of Archie,I also grew up on Archie comics as well as the
cartoons on tv. :thumb:
Digimon and Silent Mobius were the anime that changed my viewing habits. :thumb:

Yeah, I was in K-5, and then I started watching Pokémon and Digimon. So there isn't much of my life before animé.
