I just saw Saikano ep. 1, and it was WOW! What a way to start the show. So I was wondering what other shows you thought opened the series the best way. Here are my other shows:
Blue Seed
Serial Experiments Lain
Neon Genesis Evangelion

ROD TV has one of the best opening episodes that I have seen.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya's opening is my favorite first episode. The whole magical-girl-parody thing was hillarious.

Silent Mobius, especially when Katsumi's plane is attacked.

Inuyasha, when Madame Centipede first attacks Kagome and later when she sees
Inuyasha for the first time.

Dual, the way the universe splits off in the first few seconds after the discovery of the Artifact.

RahXephon, the entire attack sequence on Tokyo Jupiter and Ayato's first sighting of
Mishima,the spirit of RahXephon.

I like Trigun's opening episode quite a bit, maybe because of all the comedy with Vash. XD Also, Tsubasa Chronicle had a good first episode. That's all I can think of for now, though. :)

Regardless of the downhill slide in plot, the initial episode of AIR TV is absolutely gorgeous. It still makes me grin.

Also...Honey & Clover.

dunno as these are bests, but they're bests for me at least.

Oh, I second Honey and Clover's first episode! Even though I've not seen much of the series (24 episodes is just too long to torrent...@_@), that first episode cracks me up every time I see it. XD

The first episode of Honey and Clover is my favorite episode of the series. It just seemed like every other episode was set up like a soap opera, but the first was a comedy.

hmm...did you watch the whole thing? I dont remember thinking 'comedy' in the first ep, although it made me laugh. Tis obviously a character-driven drama.
But yeah, the rest of the series actually is funnier to me. TWISTER!! (i shall never, ever forget that)

Well, I have to throw my lot in as the 3rd vote for Haibane Renmei. Of course, I suppose I have to say that since I kind of worship this series in a non-idolatrous sort of way.

My favorite first episodes are:

Rurouni Kenshin - Kenshin and Kaworu's first encounter is priceless!
Fooly Cooly - It comes at you from all directions, and leaves you both confused and wanting more!
Fruits Basket (Yes, I love Fruits Basket--anyone got a problem with that?!)
Fullmetal Alchemist - The last scene that has the big reveal on Ed's Arm and leg were BRILLIANTLY done! And it's our first introduction to the harmonious beauty that is "Ready Steady Go!"
Joshua: Hebrew -The LORD is Salvation

I keep thinking about that scene when Ed takes off his jacket and reveals his automail...then the priest shouts out something like... "You're him...YOU'RE THE FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST!" Then the scene goes grainy and "Ready, Steady Go" starts playing!

It's a scene that will go down in anime history!

I'm going to say Samurai Champloo. It just had an awesome first episode. I also like the first episode of King of Bandit: Jing and Fruits Basket. I really have to watch most series for more than one ep. before I can form an opinion on whether or not I like the show.
