Laputa:Castle in the Sky

Postby FaerieChica » Mon May 22, 2006 6:11 pm

I just discovered this film, and I was wondering if anyone else was a fan. The music score was fantastic in my opinion. I'm tempted to find the soundtrack. If it's not known already, I'm a Miyazaki fanatic, so it's no surprise that I liked this movie. It's just a wonderful thing when you discover a great film, especially if you own it; it happened to be a part of my Miyazaki set(I didn't realize it was on there cause everything is written in Japanese).

I loved the music too! It was very otherworldly and epic.

I think that Joe Hisaishi is the composer for many Miyazaki movies, but I'm not sure.

I remember I stumbled about this when I was searching to download another anime movie (can't remember what... might've been Nausicaa) many years ago... and the name sounded SO familiar so I just got it anyways. Watch it and was amazed... and then I remembered I saw it on one of my oldish Disney VHSes as a "coming soon" (of course it didn't come as soon as people thought^^) Then I realized it came out with Kiki and Spirited Away and picked all 3 of those DVDs^^

I do wanna watch Laputa again... AMAZING movie! Heh, Miyazaki borrowed his robot design from one of the 2 Lupin 3 eps he directed. He sure like to recycle old favorite designs sometimes^^

I really like Miyazaki's works as well. This, in my opinion, wasn't his best, but it was pretty good. I liked the dubbed version better than the subbed version because it made it so much more hilarious! I think there could have been a little more character developement and the ending wasn't what I expected at all...

It was good, though.

I didn't care for this one, and was MSTing it by the time it was over. Probably one of my least favorites by him.

I bought the movie a couple years ago, being a fan of other Miyazaki films. I must admit, the first time I saw it I didn't like it that much. Watching it again, however, I liked it a lot! I think I was in a bad mood the first time...

Ooh. Big fan. XD I just watched this one a few weeks ago, though I had wanted to see it since I was about 10 years old. LOVED the movie. The music, the characters, the voices (I watched the sub, never got the time to watch the dub, since I had to rent it), the story, the beautiful animation, everything was so perfect! It's become my favorite Miyazaki film (of what I've seen of his works). Lovely, lovely, lovely. :D

Only seen a small segment of the entire movie but I really liked what I saw, although being a Miyazaki fan prior to that may have had some influence.
Will insert something intelligent here later... maybe

I love the movie.

The dub isn't great, but it's not horrible either. It's still better than watching subtitles.

I would like to see the dubbed version, but unfortunately, my pack of 13 Miyazaki films is imported, so everything is in Japanese. Then again, it's probably best that way cause I would end up never watching subs. I thought I had heard the legend of Laputa before, but I can't seem to remember when or where. They mentioned Gulliver's travels in the movie, so maybe it was from that.

Actually I have the dubbed version sitting on my self right behind me- along with Spirited Away, Kiki's ..., Princess Mon. ..., and of course Howl's Moving Castle (had to get into it with Amazon. But there was no way I was missing out on it!) And there are a few new ones from Hayao coming out. Go check out them out. I think they look cool I've seen the trailors @ YouTube. http://www.onlineghibli.com/

Once TMC did a Thursday night run of all of Hayao's works- then Cartoon Network ( : PPP) did a Friday night line up. Keep you eyes peeled.

Thanks so much for the link. Yeah, I discovered Princess Mononoke on that TCM line-up. Hopefully they do something like that again, although I own most of those now. I seriously need to buy Howl's Moving Castle though. I was just thinking, that guy on Laputa, the other heir to the throne, he was kinda crazy. Freaked me out a lil.

I thought it was good, but it dragged on a little too long. It's my least favorite Miyazaki work (my favorite being either Mononoke or Howl)
"People who sin say this, 'That they had to, to survive.' People who sin say this, 'That it is too late to stop.' That shadow called sin dogs them steadily. Without a word, remorse and agony are repeated, to finally end up at despair. Castle in the Sky is one of my favorite Miyazaki films. There aren't enough movies in his body of where that just cut loose with a good old fashoined adventure, which makes this one kind of special. I can see why some people don't like it for that, though; I admit that the story's pretty slight. But it's better paced than the others, the characters (while very simple) are cool, and of course it looks great.

I didn't realize there were so many Miyazaki fans on here. I guess I should have known, considering how great his films are. I got my sister to watch Castle in the Sky last nite, but she was weirded out by Mom, the pirate. I tried to tell her that it wasn't a man with pigtails. I don't think she believed me though.
