FUNimation's Yu-Gi-Oh! Now Avaible

Postby mitsuki lover » Thu May 18, 2006 12:35 pm

So earlier today I was going through Animenation and noting down some of the anime there that was in my budget raise that wasn't on their pre-owned
catalog. When I got down to the Y's I clicked on to the Yu-Gi-Oh! link and noticed that they had three volumes of the FUNimation version of Yu-Gi-Oh!
avaible.
So when I got back online and before coming here I clicked on again and
read what it said.
The FUNimation version is apparently the original uncut and unedited version of Yu-Gi-Oh!
Since it was going for only $17.98 if it's still avaible next month I think I will look into buying it.It would be interesting to see how the ORIGINAL is different from the 4kids version.
Oh,and it comes in both Japanese and English. :thumb:

I hate to break it to you, but they stopped making uncut releases for Yu-Gi-Oh!. I while ago, 4kids partnered up with Funimation to make special uncut DVDs for Yu-Gi-Oh! and Shaman King. I picked up vol. 1 and 2 of Shaman King Uncut ( a year ago ), just to see how well 4kids did on this. They did okay, but forgot part of the eyecatcher and blablabla. Unfortunately, 4kids discontinued making them for some reason.

Yep, unfortunately, 4Kids lied to the anime fans. I know this comes as a shock to everyone. :shady:

they said that the uncut Yugioh and Shaman King DVDs would be dependant on sales. If sales were too low, they would be cancelled. I guess they were :(.

I also heard that the problem with eye catches/next episode previews on the uncut DVDs was because the japanese companies wouldn't include them (kind of like how Toei didn't give Pioneer the next episode previews for Sailor Moon)

They didn't give them much of a chance, though.

Actually, they sold better than the edited DVDs.

I'd bet that 4Kids was maybe afraid people would like the real stuff better than their slaughtered junk and decided to pull the deal. I'd wager they looked at the sales and saw Funimation's DVD's outselling their own.

Yep. That's it. There's no other reason why 4kids would pull the plug. *sigh*

Technically they were still 4Kids products. FUNimation was just distributing them.

But yeah, you're absolutely correct.

What Beau said. Both edited and unedited versions are released by Funimation. Also, 4kids recorded the uncut dub. Whether the edited or uncut DVDs sold, 4kids would still profit, so it wouldn't make sense for them to cancel the uncut DVDs. If it's not poor sales then I'd be quicker to blaim Funi for this problem (4kids doesn't do everything you know ^^) Maybe Yugioh and Shaman King just aren't high prioritys compared to their other licences (this is the same company that is waiting OVER a year to release the second Tenchi Muyo OVA 3 DVD. I REALLY wish they hadn't bought the Tsubasa licence :( )

4Kids might be afraid that their TV ratings might be affected. They are already universally disliked (understatement of the year) by anime fans other than their target audience, they may have became afraid their target audience might get ahold of the uncut DVD's and like it better enough to stop watching the TV version.

Supposedly, the reason the uncuts were stopped was because 4kids demanded that Funimation give them a much higher cut of the profits, and Funimation disagreed.

There is evidence that the uncuts considerably outsold the edited DVDs during their brief availablity..

Actually that doesn't have anything to do with the fact that the uncut version was still avaible for purchase when I checked. And it was the first three volumes of the series not just two.I did some more checking to see if I could find who was in the unedited version and I found one place that stated that 4kids pulled the plug after the third volume came out.The fact that they were pulled after volume 3 has nothing to do with the fact of what I found at Animenation.

Yeah, but, for me unfortunately, the fact that the plug was pulled gives me know reason to buy the first ones now. And I REALLY wanted to own this series. :(

The three avaible are:Vol.1 Shadow Games,Vol.2 Insector Combo,Vol.3 Stolen:
Blue Eyes White Dragon
Interesting is it not that the plug was pulled right after the beginning of the first major story arch of the tv series. The first two volumes are before the series and the third one is the one that introduces Kaiba. If they follow the same storyline as the manga then vol.1 should include the Shadi story arch from the second and third mangas.
All of the DVDs are $17.98 at Animenation, which was the entire point of what I was tyring to say.

Kaiba appears in the first episode of the first DVD. It's when he and Yugi battle and Yugi uses exodia. The Shadi story arc and the Bakura table top RPG mini series (covered in manga volumes 1-7) are part of an entirely different Yugioh series that has not been licenced by anyone yet.

Yeah.
The first handful of volumes of Yugioh were animated into a series by a different company(Toei, I think) but cancelled due to low ratings. The series that 4kids owns the rights to and that has aired on TV is a different series that covers all of the monster card battling bits. It's a pretty common misconception that they are both part of the same anime series.

I heard somewhere they were going to wait for YuGiOh to end to start reselling the uncut
