tagline generator

Postby Mithrandir » Fri Jun 27, 2003 11:23 pm

Hi Guys,
I'm using a tagline generator that I wrote (Specifically to match the G rating of this site) but I wan't to make sure it's OK with everyone. It's a javascript that simply prints data pulled from a DB on my server. I'm the only one that can put data into it, but I didn't know if that kind of a system would make our administrator nervous. The system also has the potention of giving the appearence of slowing down the system for browsers that are querying my system looking for the taglines.

A better solution would be to add some code to the acutal board that would pull in a tagline at the time of post. It's a far more elegant solution, and I think it has the potential to add fun to the system. My tagline database can be expanded to allow others to have their own databases on the aforementioned system. They would be able to edit their own via a web interface, so it may be something other users would want to add as functionality to their own stuff.

I'm more than willing to do the coding on this project, if you want me to. (Resume available upon request :) )

rm -rf /bin/laden
Hit reload to see another one.

ROFL!!! I'm not sure what the switches are, but I remember the ReMove command from my dealings with Unix/Linux some years back.

I remember the old days, the old dialup BBS days, using off-line readers for mail, echomail/fido stuff.... (mostly I was involved with the local GTPower BBSes). I had a few scripts for QEdit (my DOS editor of choice) that would pull a line from a text file (I think I had to manually pick it) and it would do the whole sig/tag at the end... some programs had their own (so you'd have this huge text file full of them and it would randomly pick)... ah, what fun.

Having 10 or 20 in a file/form that could be inserted in the message would be great... oh mighty forum wizard, can you do us some magic? :thumb:

That was my suggestion to oldphil's sig file ;) (hey, madphil and oldphil! kewl!), although I didn't come up with it either; I stole it from some Usenet .sig somewhere (I think it was one of the folks on comp.sys.apple2). For other unix geeks, we could add /earth: 99% full. Please delete anyone you can.

did you want my java script for flactem.comtaglines?

Oh, and yeah. CK suggested I do it. BTW: The switches are -r (recursively) and -f (force).

Hmmmm...

I'm afraid i'll be having to disable html in sigs... i didn't actually know it was enabled. A malicious user could really screw up the message board eg. messing up the table structure, using javascript alerts etc.

sorry about that!

Hmm, you could use GD to dynamically create an image from your database and link to that

So that's what those mutilated posts were about. oh, ok. It had me wondering for a little bit there.
