Postby Sami_jane » Sat May 06, 2006 4:16 pm

so today i had a conversation with a girl that said that Code Lyoko was true anime even tho it came from France. i personally think that it isnt anime b/c it did not originate from japan its also mainly geared toward the younger crowd. ( i realize that some anime is but most is geared toward the older crowd) i dont even really like the show but i was just wondering what you guys thought about this. do you consider it anime or not?

Anime doesn't necessarily have to come from Japan. Anime is just Japan's word for animation. Like... our cartoons would be considered 'anime' in Japan. People just use the word anime in reference to Japanese styled cartoons.

So technically, yar, it'd be anime. :o

But like, Japanese animation wise, nu. n_n

Bap is right, technically, although the term 'anime', as used in our culture and other non-Japanese cultures, refers to Japanese animation. So, in my opinion, your friend is wrong. Code Lyoko's style of animation is obviously influenced by anime, but that doesn't make it anime. And, on a side note, I'm not too particularly fond of it either.

I suppose that, in the end, it all comes down to opinion, and this could end up developing into some kind of argument, which is not my intent. So, I ask that this thread *not* take such a turn.

That shouldn't matter :/ Hamtaro and Hello Kitty is JUST as anime as Ghost in the Shell and Ninja Scroll etc. etc. Besides, ALOT of anime is geared towards the younger, "tweeny" age.

A-ni-me = Japanese animation.

Find out the word for "French animation", and that's what you'd call "Code Lyoko."

Funny thing aobut that. The french verb for animation is 'animer' (which can be conjugated to 'anime').

I've observed in other forums that elitists of anime tend to get easily offended at people "misinterpreting" such shows for being anime, which is something that I find quite silly in my opinion. I'd say if animators are inspired by the method and production values of studios in Japan, then so be it.

I sometimes do find myself referring to shows like Code Lyoko as anime, even though I understand the general context of the word. Usually it's out of the fact that I often appreciate the attempt (whether fair or foul) made by the show to create something in the spirit of Japanese anime.

Anime is a French word that oddly enough, means 'animation' in the French language.

Anime is japanese animation... Anime coming from other parts of the world than Japan isn't considered "real" anime, IMO, like japanese animation never will be "cartoons" (because those are from America). :)

I'm glad that opinions =/= facts, because anime = Japanese cartoons.

While it is true that anime is mainly considered Japanese,it's best interpreted as a particuliar form of animation that saw it's beginnings in Japan.Earlier term for it was
Japanimation, however anime now is the more acceptable term.Though other countries are now also producing(and China and Korea for several years already)
anime-style animation. So to limit anime just to Japanese animation may in fact no longer be true.
Also I would like to point out with the further goblization of animation production, wherein different aspects of the same animation series may be produced in different parts of the world, the identifing of one country with one brand of animation is fast becoming irrelevant.

Truly, I think it's "animeshun" anyways, though it's typically just referred to as "anime." Whatever. :p

I can't bring myself to call shows like Teen Titans and Ben 10 (is that correct?) anime. I just call them amerime.

As for Code Lyoko...I've never heard of it.
