temporary storage?

ok, I really wanna reformat my harddrive now. Everything just runs way too slow, and I'm sure it's cause i've cluttered way to many programs on here. I'm willing to part with like 90% of them. However, I have a lot of data that I don't wanna loose, like several GB (at least 30), and a few programs that I don't wanna loose (like Photoshop) cause I don't wanna pay for another copy. Is there anywhere online that I can store such data temprorarily for free? I mean, I could use my DVD-RW drive since my dad has tons of blank DVDs, but to be honest I don't trust my DVDRW drive... it's very picky and iffy as to when it will work... tho maybe I should find better drivers...?

You'd need a large dedicated webhost to up that much data and then you would have to actually do it, depending on your connection that could take weeks. A secondary hard drive would be about the fastest solution and unless you just borrow one it would still be there for storage in the future. What kind of DVD writer does your father have? if it's shaky it may just be the program you're using.

I don't know what DVD writer I have. It's built into my system, and I only have one, but my computer says that my system is equipped with not one, not two, but THREE DVDRW drives, which is incorrect. I get all kinds of problems when I try working with it. eMachines do really poor jobs at making computers.

I don't suppose you have a large enough iPod to hold it all, do you? Or do you have a friend who might loan you one you can backup stuff to?

I remember using my old 30 Gig Color to hold anime during my vacation to Semi-Northen Cali from my main rig for my laptop. But like an idiot I forgot to download the codecs before I left >_>

hard drives are cheap nowadays. you could pick one up to use as backup or, like they said, borrow one from somebody. I wonder if I have an extra laying around >_> hmmmm....probably not though. test out the cd burner to see if it works this time. that'd be the best way to go.

The simpliest and cheapest alternative I would recommend is to use your DVD drive and backup...but before you do, make sure ALL programs are closed, and you might want to open up Task Manager to designate more CPU power to the application you use to burn DVD's.

Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete, click on Proceses, find your DVD burner program, right click on it, scroll down to Priority, and click on "Real Time". That gives the DVD drive priority over all other programs.

yeah, I just heard in Unix Programming yesterday from a guy who wants to do the same thing. Apparently, I can get a 100 GB drive for like 60 dollars, or a 50 GB thumbdrive for 100. I think I'll try one of those.

Slater, may I suggest using an external harddrive device like Mithrandir mentioned?

Where did you find a 50GB Thumbdrive for $100!? I would very much like to know so I can buy stock in the company!

Dunno if you've gone ahead and done anything yet, but you mentioned not wanting to lose some programs like Photoshop. Sorry to tell you, but if you reformat, you will have to reinstall all your programs AND your operating system. You can't back up installed programs like you can your data. Although, if you have the original install disc, there won't be a problem, you won't have to buy it again..... if you never had one, you're in trouble.

I would use DVD's to back up. If possible, you can always check that the data is ok on another computer before you reformat.

I have a feeling that was a typo... I don't think much flash memory is able to sustain 50 gb. The most that is commercial is about 8 gb.
