Just saw the movie for the first time today, and... I loved it too! It was certainly not a disappointment. In fact, if I could stay awake, I wouldn't mind watching it again.

Watched it tonight for the first time with my folks, who aren't into anime at all, and they loved it, as did I! The characters, animation quality, plot, and everything was magnificent! It also had some cool and simple little points that it made about the heart, corruption, beauty, and selfishness. I also saw that it used some Beauty and the Beast plot devices. To me, Spirited Away was somewhat akin to Alice in Wonderland as well. I just find that kind of funny since those were both Disney movies, and Miyazaki is of course considered the Disney of Japan! Not that there's any connection, just found to be somewhat humorous :-p All in all though, great great great film!

I finally saw this movie last Thursday and I add my praises- I can’t say enough good things about it. It is full of wonderful characters full of life. I had a great time simply watching them. You can't go wrong with Lauren Bacall and Jean Simmons. I was surprised actresses of their caliber were in the film. They added another dimension to their characters.

OK, I'll take counterpoint on this one.

Quite frankly, I was disappointed with Howl's Moving Castle. I do not think it approached the creativity of Spirited Away, the cuteness of My Neighbor Totoro, or the introspection of Omohide Poro Poro, to name just a few. In short, I would rate it in the lower half of all the Ghibli films I've seen.

I did find it rather innovative in some of its story line and plot. However, for me everything -- everything -- fell apart in the last five or ten minutes of the film. I was really hoping that there would be some sort of last-moment Haibane Renmei-ish revelation that would cause me to say, "Of course! I didn't see it, and here it was in front of me all the time!" and then run back into the theater and watch it again. Just the opposite -- the ending came, and I found myself saying, "You must be kidding -- you built me up, hoping I'll believe in your faux climax, and then your denouement smashed what little suspension of disbelief I might have had".

A very unsatisfying journey - and this from one who thinks Studio Ghibli and Miyazaki produce some of the best anime out there.

Lady Macbeth wrote:Not to start an argument or anything, but can I ask why the "Ewww"? I find him a perfectly all right hero at 30-something or even 40-something if he were to be that old.

Then again, that could be because I am closing in on 30-something myself.

Because he's a wizard - shapeshifting is a staple of witch/wizard lore, particularly in countries where shamanic magic or magic influenced by shamanic history is common, including Wales (where Howl is from) and Japan (where the anime was made). Howl tried to hide his bird shape from Sophie originally because he didn't want to frighten her off, and at the same time he didn't want her to come to know him like that.

His thoughts on his bird shape are also reflected in his commentary on the other wizards who were fighting the war and stayed as monsters for extended periods of time - they were in danger of losing themselves as humans, because like the monsters they had shifted in to they had lost focus of the humanity underneath the war. When a wizard loses sight of their humanity, they remain a monster forever. Had Sophie been frightened off by Howl's bird form he could have lost a reason to return to being human, and he knew it - and had she accepted him fully as a monster and not cared if he returned to human form he would have likewise been lost. It was through her love for him as a person - as a human - that she was able to recover his heart and pull him back into the human world.

Ahhh kinda like beauty and the beast, lol
I can't wait to see this movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I thought Howl's Moving Castle was a delightful movie, and I want to read the book really badly now.

Much love for Howl. <3

Oh, and that little dog cracked me up! Although I was expecting him to end up being someone else in disguise or something, so I was a little bit disappointed that he ended up being just a dog, haha.

Anyway, I want to see the subbed version pretty soon. I saw the dub with my friend because she's not into subbed, and it was a really good dub and all but I wanna hear what Howl sounds like in Japanese X3
