Most butchered anime?

I've read that with the Sailor Moon dub the worst parts were the earlier episodes.
Didn't they also kinda gloss over the more morbid aspects of the show?Again,I don't know as I have yet to watch it.(By morbid I mean like when the Senshis all get killed at the end, etc.)I've just trying to remember what I have read from various SM fansites.

As far as Duel Masters go,the entire dub is done tongue in cheek. That's why they refer to The OC,it's one of the pokes at American pop culture that the dubbed verison makes.

Warrior 4 Jesus wrote:But Nausicaa how was that butchered? Sure it wasn't as detailed as the manga but that's not really possible for a 2 hour movie. I think they did a very good job, but the manga is superior.

I don't think we are talking about the current Nausicaä release, which is pretty good. What is being referred to is its original release under the title "Warriors of the Wind." This utterly terrible hack bore little resemblance to the actual movie. Miyazaki was so disappointed by that hack job, it took a decade for him to allow any other of his films to come to the United States and even then only after a contract was sign forbidding any changes from being made. For that reason, Nausicaä gets my vote.

At least all of the other shows mentioned follow the original story with edits for content and time restraints. We may not appreciate the edits made to some of our favorites, but if the edits were not made, they would not have been aired on US TV. It’s as simple as that.

I disagree as far as One Piece is concerned. An ENTIRE STORY ARC was removed from the American version (in fact, if you mention the "Little Garden" arc to a person who has only watched the dubbed OP, they will say it doesn't exist). Characters were COMPLETELY changed. For example, regarding Bellemere (kind of a spoiler),
She was shot and killed by Arlong in the original version, but was "thrown in the dungeon" in the American version.
Entire fights were cut out, important plot elements (such as the horrible life-threatening wounds Zoro got from Mihawk) were ignored or glossed over.

Yes, the final two episodes of part one of Sailor Moon were cut into one episode in the dub. However, in One Piece, a record of FOUR episodes were cut into one episode. And I wish I could say that's a one time deal, but it isn't. In fact, if you look at the edits for the final episodes of the Arlong story arc, around ten episodes were made into four episodes in the English version. That's a claim Sailor Moon can't make, and is certainly not "editing for content or time restraints." No, that's nothing but outright butchery of a series.

The changes made to Cardcaptors were not merely edits, but a rewriting of the show.

As were those made to One Piece. As Kae and I have said, they removed far, FAR too much. At the point they're at, about 30% of the story has been removed or changed.

I like the OC too...but that felt completely out of place in an anime when no one in Japan has any idea what it is. It's like a plug in an American show of something as obscure as uh, any Japanese soap opera.

Sailormoon was pretty bad, but I've heard horrible things about Saban's stuff... And "Battle of the Planets" I've heard was VERY torn to bits... One of the VA's from that version commented on how violent the original show was... I sorta want to watch the orginal version now, to see if that was an exaggeration... Then there's G-force, the second dub which was still screwed up... I think that's the version I was introduced to the show with...

Have you noticed with Zatch Bell that if a gun is shown in a scene that it is a glowing green color, I guess thats to remove any gun violence reference from the series.
That is one thing is that what is consider extreme violence and mature scenes in Japanese animation has to be removed if it has to be shown on US TV.
But I guess that doesn't apply to American made shows like American Dad or Family Guy that gets shown on Fox TV and CN.

Same case with One Piece (though at first all the guns were cork guns or super soakers >.< ).

I've come to the conclusion that most of you haven't seen the One Piece dub (compared with the original, at least).

Well, since people are commenting on specific edits, I'm pretty well acquainted with Sailormoon's stuff...

1. Names were changed... All of them. The one that stayed closest to the original (DiC eps, I mean) was Rei became Raye, suggesting it's short for Rachel (or "Raychel".) Because, of course, no child in America would watch a show about Japanese people...

2. It was suggested the whole show took place in America... For some reason, they still fit in images of Tokyo Tower... People thought it was the Eiffel Tower, because it's never explained... That is a common complaint I hear about the show "Why is the Eiffel Tower in it? And why is it Red and White?"

3. Episodes were taken out... A number in the first season for no real reason, other than perhaps to create a syndication packet (actually, 2 packets, so they included eps in season 2 as well) with no extra episodes...

The last 3 episodes in the first season were chopped to bits... 2 eps were made into 1. In the original version of these eps, though I think most people know I'll still put in spoilers
Everyone dies... In the first one, all the sailors but Sailor Moon die at the hands of very powerful youma (the monsters of the week in the first season) In the last one, Mamoru (Tuxedo Mask) fights Sailormoon, as he is controlled by Beryl, but when he finally remembers who he is, he protects sailormoon from an attack, and dies, while killing Beryl. As Beryl is dying from the rose, Metalia takes her body and fights Sailormoon for the last battle. The MEMORY of her dead friends pushes her to push Metalia back, but the only way she can kill metalia is to use the crystal, which takes the life of its user when it's at its full power... That is how Queen Serenity died as well. When someone uses it, however, they get a final wish. Not a wish they can think up, but the deepest desire of their heart. Queen Serenity's deepest wish was that her court would be safe in a world without Beryl and Metalia, but Usagi's wish was that none of this had ever happened, and they could just live a normal life. So, the Sailors and Mamoru were resurrected, but it was as if they had never done any of that, including that they had never met... Now, in the DiC version, the deaths were cut out, and instead this rediculous story about "being taken to the negaverse" was made up, which I could tell was not quite right at the time... 2 Very emotional episodes were turned into rather pointless ones
3. Characters were changed... A rather minor change, Rei was always angry, arrogant, and bossy, but she also had a loving side. She wanted to protect Usagi. This aspect was downplayed in the Dub a bit... By the removing of Rei's scene in the second to last episode, as well as changing of some of her dialogue, they served to make the characters even more 1 dimensional than people accuse the show of being anyhow... A more major change was making Zoicite a woman, for obvious reasons though once you know he's a man, it doesn't help that they changed him into a woman. Oh, and the names of the generals, almost forgot... Kunzite was changed into Malachite... Why? I believe they are both precious stones, so why change one precious stone into another... Then Jadeite was turned into Jedite... Jedite is NOT a precious stone... And they mispelled Zoicite in the materials (it became Zoycite) and Nephrite became Neflyte, also not a precious stone... Changing Kunzite into Malachite made it sound like they understood the generals were named after

I know this doesn't come close to what some anime went through, though. It's still annoying.

False, actually, Though that could be inferred, perhaps, from the first 53 or so episodes, Rubeus (another name kept intact) made it quite clear that he and the Ayakashi sisters (did they even really have a name in the dub?) were trying to take over Crystal Tokyo in the "Negamoon" saga.

3. Episodes were taken out... A number in the first season for no real reason, other than perhaps to create a syndication packet (actually, 2 packets, so they included eps in season 2 as well) with no extra episodes...

Episodes removed:

2. This episode dealt with Umino/Melvin visiting a fortune teller (a youma) and being put under mind control. He then acted like a jerk, including being insulting towards Miss Haruna and flipping up her skirt to see her panties. Tarot cards, plus Melvin's behavior probably led to its being cut.

5. The pet store episode, I'm sure it was removed due to Shingo/Sammy kicking Luna, Luna viciously attacking a cute furry critter, and general animal violence.

20. The whole episode had the Senshi running around in swimsuits, probably why it was removed.

42. Probably removed because of some violent scenes. It's explained that Sailor V left England by pretending to have been killed in a grenade explosion. Near the end, when Minako's friend Katarina is turned into a youma, Sailor Moon wants to kill Katarina for taking away the man Minako loved, but Minako talks Sailor Moon out of it. All the parts about death are surely why this was cut.

67. Another episode of the Senshi in swimsuits.

So it's unfair to say that the episodes were cut for "no reason." Though I don't agree with the reasons for being cut, it's not like they cut them just for the heck of it.

Kunzite was changed into Malachite... Why?

According to wikipedia, "In the English version, Kunzite is renamed Malachite reportedly due to trademark ownership of the original name in the United States." Whatever THAT means.

For the record, Kunzite was NOT gay in the manga. Zoisite did appear in drag in one chapter, but he was not in a relationship with Kunzite. In fact, in the manga, the Shitenno (the four Generals) were originally loyal servants of the Moon Kingdom, and were in love with the four inner princesses. Kunzite was in love with Sailor Venus, and Zoisite with Sailor Mercury.

I would also say Sailor Moon has been badly butchered, even though I understand why they did certain things. I don't think I could ever watch the series with Zoicite as a guy. That's just... yeah, enough said. But the more serious parts such as when Mars slaps Sailor Moon to bring her back to reality might have been harsh for a kid's show, but there was nothing objectionable about them.

As far as the 3rd series goes, I can agree with certain details about Haruka and Michiru being edited out. But "cousins"? That makes it better?? To me it would have been perfectly acceptable to make the two of them roommates and nothing more. They even edited one scene where Michiru was talking about Adam and Eve and had her babble on about her non-existant boyfriend, Brad. >.<

If we could get a non-shojo-ai version that cuts out the pointless and annoying changes, I would be a happy little fangirl. As it is now, I generally watch the subtitled version and just ignore certain episodes. ^_^

I read somewhere that the piece of artwork that showed the 4 generals and the inner senshi together didn;t really mean anything romantic, Naoko just wanted an excuse to draw them together.

Maybe, but the Sailor Moon: Another Story game for Super Famicom (even though it isn't exactly canon) DID show that there were romantic relationships between the Shitenno and the Senshi, so I think it's pretty much accepted. At any rate, Kunzite wasn't gay in the manga, that much is for certain.

Also in the manga, the Three Lights never turned into men like in the anime. They disguised themselves as men, yes, but unlike the anime, it was only a disguise. Sailor Moon's creator and manga artist Naoko Takeuchi was famously annoyed at the change and found it to be a cheap subversion of her explicit rule that only women could become Sailor Senshi.

I dunno... I kinda liked the idea that guys could be senshi too. I mean, it doesn't make sense that Mamoru is the only male in the entire universe who can be a male planetary guardian. (erm... am I getting off topic?)

Planetary Guardian, maybe, but not Senshi. At any rate, I found the "turning into women" thing kinda disturbing, even though the Starlights are cool. Though it was my impression that they were actually female and just transformed into men to help attract Kakyuu.

Tokyo Mew Mew most definitely. Not only was it valley-girl-ized, but the title in of itself transformed into Mew Mew Power. What the heck!?

Hallelujah! Normally I refer to an anime by its English name, but I've become so disgusted by 4Kids that I refer to this and every other anime they've butchered by their Japanese names.
Simple arithmetic:
FF7 + World War II games = overrated
freedom + things we're lucky to have = taken for granted
manga + anime = a very happy person
Salvation + Jesus' Sacrifice = Eternal Life
a village - its idiot = a lot of smart people
(more to come)

Words of wisdom:

"Sometimes Justice is a (insert item here)!" - Kato Kaelin

"You wouldn't lie to a judge with a baseball bat, would you?" - Extreme Akim

"For as low as you go, ask God to take you that high." - Tyler Perry

"I had the right to remain silent...I just didn't have the ability." - Ron White

"Your trademark is stupidity!" - Mr. T

"Your eyes can deceive you, don't trust them." - Obi Wan Kenobi

"If you can't be good, be good at it." - my uncle

They kept almost everything intact from the original Japanese version, and hardly edited a thing. This is for MOST butchered anime, not least.
