Digimon: VA big breaks?

Postby Tenshi no Ai » Sat Dec 17, 2005 1:14 pm

Is it just me or when Digimon aired it REALLY gave a "big break" to those who voiced on it? Seems like more and more I'm finding their VAs (and mind you I'm speaking dub-wise) appearing on other anime. Here's a list of what I have so far:

Tai/Taichi: played Tetsuo on Akira.

Izzy/Koushiro: played well, several different roles such as Minoru off Chobits (a computery person, go figure), heard he played Hige on Wolf's Rain, and I'm sure I've heard him elsewhere.

Kari/Hikari/the teacher off Tamers/Digimon season 3: just heard her last night on the GitS: Stand Alone Complex playing the bookworm Tachikoma.

Joe/Jou: think I heard him play a minor role on Akira as well.

I'm sure I've heard others, but it just seems that they were "unheard" of before Digimon aired... a popular show after all^^ Yay.

This group of VAs are in anime ranging from Digimon, Cowboy Bebop, Big O, Rurouni Kenshin, S-cry-ed, Wolf's Rain, Samurai Champloo, and many others. It's a mix and match for some shows, while in others you can find them all.

Yeah, Digimon has a bunch of really famous american anime VAs. Off the top of my head there was Mona Marshal (Izzy) who's in almost all the Bang Zoom dubbed animes, Wendee Lee (young TK, I think) who's in almost every anime on the planet ^^, and Steve Blum (JP) who was in a bunch of stuff like GTO and Cowboy Bebop.

It wasn't really their "big break" though. Digimon was a 1999 anime and I think most of these actors were in stuff prior to that.

Joshua Seth, who voiced Tai, has done a million different things. My best friend and I are always yelling "OMG IT'S TAI!" when we're watching things. I believe he did one of the demons on Inu-yasha....Kojiro or something, maybe?

Yeah it's pretty funny when you hear them on other series. I know if you watch enough anime in Japanese you can begin to get familar with some seiyuus and wow do they ever appear all over! I just find it weird in english because when I first heard Tai's voice as Tetsuo, I just thought it was odd and couldn't get the spiky-haired character's image outta my head >_<

Yeah totally. I couldn't picture Tai's voice as a villian. Same thing with some of the other voice actors. The guy who plays Ken in 02 plays Keitaro in Love Hina and Chaos in Xenosaga, which is kind of weird!! And I couldn't picture the dub voice of Spike Speigal coming out of Junpei from Frontier, although I have to admit he did a good job.

eh, I think Tai and Tetsuo had plenty in common anyway. Of course, I've only watched bits and pieces of Akira dubbed, I mostly watch the sub.

(Finally, someone who thinks just like me that these voice actors are the coolest in the game!)

It freaks me out whenever I hear Digimon VA's doing other anime:

Case in point: When I was watching Wolf's Rain for the first time, I jumped from my chair and screamed "THAT'S TAI!" (Actually, I typed "That's Tai" in all caps in an IM window: same difference!)

And that wasn't all...when the 2nd episode came on, the second Toboe opened his mouth, I nearly fell backwards. "THAT'S IZZY!" The little computer dude I watched on TV almost religiously for the past 2 years was now a wolf that kinda favored Izzy, but not by much!
