"what's the fuss about?"

Postby Tenshi no Ai » Wed Nov 09, 2005 9:30 am

That's the best short title I can come up with for this, and I don't think this topic has been made in the past...

Ok, has there ever been anime (that you've seen/haven't seen before), that you just never understood what WHY it is so great and popular about it? It doesn't have to be an extremely overrated one, but popular enough that many people know about.

Try and keep this topic civil! It's not supposed to be a "don't like it and why" topic, just... you never really understood what the fuss was about it. Just try not to criticize anything to the point of offence^^

My list
-----------------------

Cowyboy Bebop (Yes an extremely popular show. But darned if I know what is so popular about it, either than the good quality voice acting. I watched the movie and it was alright, but still.)

Trigun (*shrugs* Supposed to be popular, but meh.)

Akira (Watched it cause Anime Insider folk kept saying how good it was and so forth, and either than being the first full-length anime on the big screen, *shrugs*)

Beyblade (...spinning tops used as a sport... speaks for itself. I can see why the toy would be popular, but watching it? *shrugs again*)

aaaand... I think that's about it for me.

Air. I had heard wonderful things about it, and I actually thoroughly enjoyed it for the first six episodes or so...but then things started getting weird, the characters that I liked were removed from the story completely, and I didn't care for the overdone, predictable ending..

Gundam. Never understood why people are so crazy over it, probably never will.

I think there's more, but that's probably all I can remember.

Naruto. Read the first volume of the manga, didn't get what the big deal was. Saw the first episode of the anime, still didn't get it.

Spirited Away. It was okay, but I still didn't get why everyone made such a big deal out of it.

ditto on Naruto it is ok but i don't see the point, yet i can see why some shows have much popularity is the characters and with character you can make fanfics.[Which may be what boosts it's popularity in the first place.]but this is only a guess.

FMA. Probably because it's everywhere :eh:

I second Kae with the Gundam series. The only reason why I'd watch it is because there's invariably a masked man in every series *shrug*

I could write an essay about the reasons I think FMA is the most overrated anime ever, but I won't.

I do think Fruits Basket is a bit overrated as well. I enjoy it, but not to the extent that others seem to. ^_^; Trigun as well.

Yeah FMA too... it does spark a bit of interest for me now, and I would watch it if I had CN but since I don't, I won't be downloading/buying it any time soon. So unless it appears on YTV, meh :/

For me, I never understood why One Piece was so popular (waits to get pummeled by One Piece fans  ). Maybe it's because I watched a few episodes of the 4kids dub :P.

RahXephon - Ahh, I just find it to be slow and boring. I think the characters are dull, and the animation is cheap.

GunGrave - Yeah, I was disappointed with this one, too.

Excel Saga - It was funny for a couple episodes, and then it got annoying.

Samurai Champloo. Probably because I have no interest in hip-hop music, haha. But seriously, I guess I expected better from the makers of Cowboy Bebop, one of my favorite shows.

Also, Paranoia Agent. That one's probably just too weird for my tastes or something...not to mention it doesn't make much sense. XD

Another one is definitely One Piece. I mean, I had heard from an internet acquaintance that it was really fantastic, bu-u-ut...I saw the first ep when it came on CN the first time, and I couldn't handle more than 15 minutes of it. Haha! Of course, 4Kids could have been a contributor to that...<<^_^;

Ninja Scroll- Total. Crap.

Outlaw Star- Besides a few episodes, it seemed pretty mediocre to me.

Spirited Away- 2 hours of my life that I will never regain... ;;_;;

Record of Lodoss War- Again, just a couple of episodes were actually good. For the most part, just another B-series.

Full Metal Alchemist and Rurouni Kenshin. To be fair, I have only ever seen a few episodes of either series, and didn't get very deep into the storylines; it's possible that I missed out on the better parts of them.

I have also never understood why people like Inuyasha. My exposure to it has been slightly greater than FMA and RK, but not by much.

Naruto- I really just couldn't stand the main character.

Evangelion- A lot of whiny angst. But with giant robots.

RaXephon- See Evangelion.

That is to say, when the mind is working; that is to say further, when it is engaged in corrrecting its mistakes. Trigun - interesting, yes, but I don't see it.

FLCL- dude, its wrong on soooooo many levels!

Digimon - nope, never even liked it once upon a time.

To go somewhat in concurrence with zipo_master, I would say that honestly, it really isn't entirely fair to judge a series, at least on the grounds of viewing just handful of episodes. Personally, I try not to make any kind of over-arcing judgments until I've seen the whole thing unless it's just too burdensome to get through it all. Thus, in most cases I at least wait till after say disc 2. This way you've gotten past disc 1, which may or may not be slow at first due to how characters and their development is introduced, and usually the plot will have gotten into a somewhat better swing by disc 2. As a side note, though, I 'd say with Naruto you'd need to give it at least a 6-8 episode trial run due to the fact that the thing is so dang huge! :-p But to get back on the subject of this thread, for me the following shows were kinda confusing regarding why there was so much hype:

Rurouni Kenshin tv series (saw the first six discs; really good stuff for sure! And maybe it's just me, but while the series was good, still found it to be a far cry from the OVAs)

Dragon Ball and it various incarnations (I've seen most of Z, some of the original, though not a ton of GT; definitely good, high caliber action..... and that's sorta it O.o; to me, it's the Power Rangers of anime: new bad guy= must save Earth, new bad guy= get stronger, save Earth again, etc.; action for action's sake is something I have a hard time with if that's..... all there is O.o)

Hamtaro (I have a special place in my heart for cute/chibi/hilarious type stuff, but this just weirds me out O.o

Trigun (I keep hearing about how Vash is such an amazing character and other things regarding the show in terms of depth/messages; that's not to say everything has to have some life altering message, but then everything I've seen of this show seems to be the "opposite" of or kinda lacking in what I've been told makes it so good, besides comedy that is :-p)

Sailor Moon (Kind of the Power Rangers syndrome as mentioned regarding Dragon Ball/Z/GT, though since I've seen a decent amount of episodes, I do see good for nice character development which is a plus :-))

DNAngel (though it stars one of my fave English VAs Vic Mignogna, who's a Christian too, the show seemed to be confused about itself, whether it wanted to be more of a dark, mysterious type or more comedic/coming of age/quirky)

Can't think of any others right now, but I'll add them in another post if I do
:-p

Trigun - saw volume 2 (from library didn't have the others) and thought the comedy was too weird, the character drawing styles too out there and the animation lacking.

Dragon Ball X - only seen the tv versions, but the characters power up for like 5 episodes and then fight, so boring.

I haven't seen a whole lot of anime so that's all at the moment.

Yeah, I somewhat agree, I thought it was a bit too wierd (out there) for me too.

FLCL- it's a bit chaotic or random...
Princess Mononoke- they could have cut at least 45mins from that movie and got the same effect...

One Piece- don't like the style

Love Hina- A story that starts and ends with nothing being accomplished

Ghost in the Shell 2: The first one was good, but the second really dissapointed me. Maybe I saw the first one like 3yrs before the second so I forgot many of the concepts.

Escaflowne- fell asleep

To Heart- gave up after ep 6 or 7. The story just seemed dull and slow paced.

Like The One We Aren't Allowed To Discuss.

RahXephon. Like The One We Aren't Allowed To Discuss, only it makes even less sense and has an even less fulfilling ending.

Escaflowne. My friends and I say that whenever an anime or other movie or show really blows it's ending, they "Escaflowne" it. Worst ending ever.

Gasaraki - the heartwarming tale of a family torn apart by CDD - Compulsive Dance Disorder. And they escaflowned the ending.

[quote="eva-boy7985"]Rurouni Kenshin tv series (saw the first six discs]

Haha, you need to see the second set of 8 discs! That's where the best part of the story takes place! The first arc is okay, but it's got too many filler episodes and a lot of..."silly" situations, I guess, even though it's still good. It doesn't get really good until the second season (Kyoto Arc), so if you ever get the chance, you should definitely check it out! Great stuff, I say.

Inuyasha- It just doesn't seem that interesting to me, maybe I just didn't see the right episodes.

s-CRY-ed- Haven't seen much, but what I saw didn't make much sense.

Paranoia Agent- the first ep. was okay, but the one I saw after that was just... weird. And I like weird, but wow, that was weird.

Ghost in the Shell: 82 minutes of build up, then it ends before anything really happens. I love Stand Alone Complex, though.

Rurouni Kenshin: The whole thing is just so... so... average. Not really BAD, but really average.

Trigun: Pretty much the same. There's just nothing that sets it apart from the pack for me.

Gundam SEED: I tired SOOOOOO hard to get into this, but the characters are just so hard to be interested in.

To be honest, there aren't a whole lot of anime where I honestly don't understand how it's popular. I generally just disagree, that's all.
