Firefox pain

Postby Bobtheduck » Tue Oct 04, 2005 7:37 pm

Well, I posted this to prayer as an unregistered (since I didn't remember my password and didn't remember how to get it again until today) but Firefox started crashing everytime it tried to load my cookies...

Well, I reinstalled firefox, and it told me when I tried to load it again that I had to use a different profile, because the other one (default) was in use! Now, I had only one instance of Firefox open, so I don't know how it could have been "in use", so I had to make a new profile for Firefox... Ends up, it didn't use my cookies, so all my cookies (for cafepress, ywamconnect, CAA, friendster, and a few other sites I had which I don't remember passwords for) are gone... My history and cache were also deleted somehow, but that's not as important as my cookies... It was only on my user (the admin) that this was the case. Firefox worked just fine in the other users on the same machine. It said it was an error in msvcrt.dll...

I suspect it may have had something to do with a trojan that downloaded in an animated cursor that came as a flyby download... Well, at least, I did a virus search as soon as the problems started, and that's what came up.. I don't know the two were connected for sure, but I'm stuck on a few of those passwords... *sigh*

From now on, I'm consolidating my passwords on everything except sites that involve money...

Oh, all my bookmarks are gone too... Grr...

Did you happen to install the Google Toolbar, by any chance?

Hmm... That's the only time I've heard of that error. it's possible there's a hard drive failure (sector corruption) or a trojan or a virus. I'd recommend scanning for these as soon as you can.

I occasionally have cookie problems with some sites, and just put it down to being a quirk of Firefox. Usually I clear all from Tools-->Options, and cookies start to behave after that. Depending on your situation, it might help to have a secret list for passwords off the computer, maybe password protected.

Or maybe Mithrandir and Shooraijin will post that I'm a total moron for doing that, security wise? ;)

Hey, if no one can get to it, you should be fine. I keep my list in my head, though.

I got too many to remember, so I have to do this.

I found out the hard way not to encrypt the file in case of needing to do an emergency System Recovery-- kiss that file good bye when that happens

So I keep it on an external hard drive, which is always off except when I need to access it

I just keep my passwords in my head, too.

Perhaps I am wired differently than you. I have over 100 that I can think of off the top of my head that I have to remember. Then again, part of my job is ensuring security.

EDIT: Well, nevermind. I updated firefox, and everything's back to normal... All systems nominal.

It listed two themes, though, and one of them (the one I had) said it won't work anymore, so maybe it was the theme that stopped working? I dont' know... Whatever, it's over with now... 'Course, my buttons aren't as pretty...
