KhakiBlueSocks wrote:Hey! Don't hate on Kaga's wardrobe! I'm headed to the mall as soon as I leave the library and I'm going straight for the sparkly cow pattern department! You're right on the money with the commentators. My personal favorite is the Doc (Yukio Hattori), you know he actually did two battles in Kitchen Stadium...and lost miserably! But he still hangs in there and he stepped into the role of chairman when Kaga boycotted the battles. (The Iron Chefs lost 6 battles in a row). It's just like watching a sporting event with the reporters on the floor. Here's a "typical" exchange:

Ota:"Fukui-san!"

Fukui: "Go head, Ota."

Ota: "The Challenger just added salt to his dish, and is loading it into the steamer!"

Fukui: Allright, challenger Inuyasha loading his squid dish into the steamer for a quick steamjob."

Hattori: "You know, they used to call this type of steaming "Momentai" in the warring states era of Japan."

Female Judge: "The Challenger looks so determinded in his red kimono!" *giggles uncontrollably for thirty seconds*

Male Judge: "Yes, you know, I've been to the warring states era before and I actually saw a medicine man dressed in a robe like that made from the hairs of the firerat!"

Fukui: "Well, lets hope the challenger uses that fire towards his dishes."

*Everyone chuckles*

You're right on the button there. Kurimoto-san and Asako Kishi (I think) have tasted the most dishes in Kitchen Stadium...second only to the chairman of course, who's tasted them ALL!

However didn't you just say that Kaga boycotted some of the battles after the Iron Chefs lost 6 in a row?
I still can't get over the fact that Kaga's last name is only one vowel
different(at least in the English spelling)from Koga!
What I don't like about the American version is they don't have the same
sense of drama, partly because the Iron Chefs don't rise out of the
floor like on the original version and partly because the Chairman tells
the challenger who they're going to go up against.I like it more when the
challenger gets to decide who he or she is going up against. You can always
sense the tension.
btw:I believe one of the regular judges is actually a food critic.

If memory serves me right, Asako Kishi is the food critic. she's really blunt when it comes down to describing dishes!

Well the dishes and the contenders are already decided beforehand it's not spontaneous, they do have to have some preperation.

One of my favorite stories in the Tenchi manga:Sasami Stories is the one
where eveyrone's favorite 9 year old Juriian Princess goes on a tv series
that's partly a kid's version of The Iron Chef. :thumb:

the only episode of Iron Chef i've watched was one where the surprise ingredient was live octopus. i've rarely laughed harder at such an odd tv show. amazingly funny. i mean..dude...they basically grabbed out these live octopi and hacked, boiled, cooked them on tv. classic entertainment!! rofl.

sidenote edit: alton brown is the man. i really miss Good Eats.
Cast in the name of God, ye not guilty.

They showed the one yesterday where Sakai lost the octopus battle.I knew he was going to loose because I saw the one where,I believe Marimoto, won the octopus
battle and they were talking about how the Iron Chefs had gone something like
0-2 or 0-3 in Octopus battles.

That ice cream sure sounds tasty...They make everything into ice cream though...I've seen eggs and fish and lots of crazy iron chef-cream.

Did anyone catch Komei Nakumaura (New Iron Chef Japanese) debut battle? I fell asleep 1/2 way in. Who won?

Nakamura. He won 3-1.Although he was at an disadvantage because he was up against a French chef and the ingredient was foie gras.

Well, remember that Michiba had Foie Gras for his debut match and he did pretty well. To be Iron Chef Japanese, you have to be ready for anything they throw at ya.

BTW, did anyone else think that his tall panel photo looked a little...smug? He almost looks like he's sneering in that picture.

Michiba? Well, personality wise he seems to be the more aggressive of the Iron Chefs. I remember one battle he did, when the panel was judging, one of the younger actresses had a complaint about each of his dishes. When she finally got to the last one he laid into her verbally. Seemed very uncharacteristic for someone of Japanese background let alone an Iron Chef.

I was actually talking about Nakamura! I'm sorry I didn't clear it up! :hits_self

But I know what battle you're talking about! He TORE into that bubbly actress like a knife through COD! (Last night's theme ingredient)

You know, I wouldn't mind seeing that myself...but only if the battle was in the REAL kitchen stadium Japan--not that crud spin-off they have on TV now! I HATE Iron Chef America!

like Sea Snail.

Kobe isn't on as much as the others!
