There are lots of good tutorials out there that you should find helpful. I recommend goodtutorials.com for photoshop stuff and deviant art has a TON of helpful resources and tutorials for coloring anime pics and anything else you could want.

Look for tutorials everywhere and ask questions when you see somthing you like. Also spend a ton of time in the programs to get a feel for what they do. I also found using books on the programs helped greatly.

I come from a tough school--I learned the basics of photoshop during my stint as an art major, but the majority of it I learned pure trial and error. I walled all summer long between high school and college, and just experimenting around helped me get a handle on things.

Yep, I read TONS of tutorials from PSlover.com . They're so helpful.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

Like Mechana, Ashley and Uriah I pretty much learned by trial and error in messing about in the program then just supplemented that with a couple of tutorials later on. I agree with Mechana in that asking questions when you see someone do something you like and spending time mucking about in PS is definitely useful.

Plus, if you have any friends/know anyone who uses photoshop, see if you can hang around and watch them do something with it. Even though it was only for very short periods of time, when I first started using Photoshop I was able to watch two people do some things in the program and it helped me a lot. As well as seeing how they did something it gave me an idea of the sorts of the things the program and its tools could do so that I could experiment with them on my own.

I pull some awesome out of my bag of awesome, and trade it to a guy for two helpings of mediocre. I then make mediocre paste, and use it to join two images together.

Then I mess around in the GIMP awhile until I can fake what I want.

It's probably better to find someone skilled in the program to teach you some techniques.
The cake used to be a lie like you, but then it took a portal to the deception core.
