Ever since I've been collecting anime, I have been having problems with the picture on my TV. Basically, line noise, funny little rainbows popping up everywhere, ect. I bought an S video cable which somewhat reduces this problem, but it's still there. It's not my DVD player, as I have owned several different players with the same results (first my PS2, than a region 1 player, and finally, my region free player). The only place I can point the blame is my TV. (8bit and 16bit video games like my Master System, Genesis, ect. do not display properly either) So, I am seriously planning to buy a new TV, which will be awhile as I'm still saving up for my next Japanese courses, but first, I wanted to check and see if anyone here can shed any new light on the problem. Should I buy a new TV? What would be the best one to get? Can componet video cables hook up through an RF modulator?

I was going to ask if it's hooked up through a VCR or something, but you say it's hooked straight to the TV.

VCRs can pick up the copy-protection stuff and will sometimes cause some image distortion like that.

Can componet video cables hook up through an RF modulator?

Oh Heaven's no!!! That would be the worst thing to do. RF is the worst of the ways to input into the TV. Component (RGB) is the best, S-Video (Color, B&W, Sound) is below that, AV (Video, Audio) is even further down, and RF is the worst (that's one signal for Audio and Video).

Couple things to check. Is everything plugged into the same place. I've found over the years that sometimes you'll get grounding issues if they don't share the same wiring from the wall (this tends to be a bigger issue with 3-wire plugs than typical 2-wire like TV and VCRs).

What's the quality of the cable?

Where do the cables run? Are they running too close to big speakers or such (The magnetic fields might cause some noise in the signal).

How old is the TV? Is it cable ready or do you have one of those adaptors?

Are you using a switch-box? Have you tried it without if you are?

Do you have multiple AV inputs? Have you tried the others?


I have a site with some good DVD info on it, but the link is at my Mom's place, so it'll be Tuesday before I can get it.

I would like a good TV that has componet video slots but less than $300. My TV is a Sanyo, I have a smaller one that is an Emerson. (Both yield the same results)

Wah? You're using an RF adaptor to connect the devices to your TV? That's your problem then. A VCR might yeild you some better results (that's how I'm hooked up, TV and XBox wire through a Madcat switch box into my VCR).

My TV isn't even cable-ready, so don't feel bad

I guess I'm just going to have to shop around for another TV then... I prefer having the best picture possible... especially for anime!
