log2 on a calculator - Network stuff

Postby skynes » Wed Aug 03, 2005 8:05 am

For my networks exam in August, I need to calculate Nyquist's theory and Shannon's theory.

Nyquists is I = 2Hlog2V
where H is the bandwidth and V is the number of levels.

Thing is though, calculators only do log 10, not log 2.

Does anyone have any idea how to work log 2 on a calculator?

Yes.... say you have log216.....now you have to have a base of 10 so you change it by doing it like this. (log16)/(log2) and it should = 4 if not just put (log2) over (log16)

Works spot on. I've put in my notes as

get log 10 x.
divide result by log 10 2

i.e. log 10 x / log 10 2
