Bob Newhart

Postby Bobtheduck » Sun Nov 09, 2003 3:38 am

Out of curiosity, anyone in here a Bob Newhart fan? I am a "Nick @ Nite" baby, and I grew up with shows like Bob Newhart, May Tyler Moore, **** van Dyke, and I Love Lucy...

Bob Newhart had been one of my faves for a lont time... I love "The Bob Newhart Show" and I loved "Newhart"... His deadpan humor was irresistable... It's great how he can be so funny and look like he's not trying to...

Well, a big event for me, I am going to a Bob Newhart show on the 15th... He's doing his live act at my local Community college, and I bought tickets... This will be the first live comedy show I've ever been to... Stage productions (including concerts) just haven't been my thing, but this is different... I'm pretty excited about this one...

So, first off, if anyone else is going tell me, it would be great to meet up... That is a slim chance, though, so who else likes his style?

Sigh ... you mean the *Richard* Van Dyke show *smacks censor logic*

Which community college? How much are tickets, just for fun?

A friend of my parents met Suzanne Pleshette a few years ago (on the flip side of things), and she was a real potty mouth, unfortunately. But I suspect Bob has a more classy act.

I watched Hogan's Heroes non-stop on TV Land until they stopped running it. I'm waiting for them to start running Mission: Impossible ... Viacom owns the rights, and the seriously inferior movies have done well at the box office, so why not? *points mass mailer at Viacom E-mail system*

Hmm... Surprised the censor logic didn't pick up "dyke" as that can also be an offensive phrase...

It's at Citrus College in Glendora, and the tickets are $28 for students, and almost out... For non-students, it's probably a lot more...

I hope he's not really bad... i dont think he would be... he's got too much good stuff that he's famous for that's clean... I mean, I don't think this is going to be, say, a Chris Rock or Robin Williams performance... Not Bob... He's been a family type his whole career, at least I think... hmm...

Bob Newhart has never had to resort to the "offensive" material in order to get a laugh. I think you will enjoy his show. I really like his style. He is the average Joe up against life. My favorite work of his was Newhart. I wish Nick would run them again. I wouldn't mind if they put a DVD collection of it out. I certainly would get it.

In fact he reminds me a lot of my dad (also named Bob) in looks, personality and humor.

I'd be interested to hear what you think, bob. I love his style of humor. Some of the lines of out is stuff will never die. And I agree with RD. I don't ever recall him doin' the Robin Williams thing to get a laugh. *sigh* Oh well.

Cosby does rock, yo. I need to get some more of his older albums on CD.

My problem with Richard Pryor is he can be a bit raunchy, sort of reminiscent of Eddie Murphy's earlier stuff. It's a shame, because he doesn't need to be crude to be funny. The guy is a riot naturally. (Boy, this is a familiar story.)

The Chickenheart... That was the funniest cosby routine ever... And the snakes on the floor that are invisible... And they'll kill you until tomorrow... hehehe... I'll update everyone on Bob Newhart's performance. Also, if you want to take a chance on finding me in that large crowd as I'm trying to get in to my seat, that may be a chance to meet me for all my adoring fans

(Delusions of Gradeur? Say that again and I'll sick my purebread (name of really expensive guard dog)s on you... Now get out of my 200 Acre well manicured estate!)

I can't remember either of them ever talking ...

My all time favorite old show (well, it's my favorite show in general I guess) is Facts of Life. My friends will pray for my bank account the day they put the series to dvd ...

I've never heard of Bob Newheart - most of the comedy I see is British.

Both the Darryls were indeed silent. That is until just about the end of the series when it was advertised that they would break their silence. That was a big ratings boost.

By the way, Bob Newhart had a guest appearence on ER tonight.

Of course he did. He was just in a movie. That means he has a guest appearance on EVERYTHING. I think I saw him on Sharon the other night.

Show's over, folks...

Postby Bobtheduck » Sat Nov 15, 2003 10:10 pm

Well, the show is over... It was very short (about an hour and 15 minutes, not counting the opener...)

I was the youngest person there that wasn't working there or on stage (for the opening, a swing band)

All the stuff I was used to hearing in his TV show was absent... Except for one short sketch... For the most part, it was not to my tastes...

First off, he told jokes I didn't know a white guy could get away with... His opening joke was about vietnamese gangs... He got booed on that one, actually, but then he started saying "People are offended too easily. I can't make a joke about anyone because there's always some group that will write me a letter afterword." He also took the Lord's name in vain more than a few times (a little strange because he was supposed to be a devout catholic...) and I just didn't find it that funny... Sad, because I actually found his TV shows (Bob Newhart show and Newhart) to be very very funny...

It was almost not worth the money, except they had a swing band before his act and they were great! Two of the percussionists especially really got into it and it was just really fun to watch.

I am disappointed, though... I thought this would be a big event for me, but he just couldn't stick with what made him good I guess...
