Calling Linux and MacOS users -- need beta testers! ^_^

Postby TheMelodyMaker » Thu May 26, 2005 9:45 pm

I just remembered something that I need some help with since I can't do this on my end, but I need someone who uses Linux, and someone who uses MacOS, both of whom also uses a Windows emulator (or not?) to try my current demo of The Traveller's Guide to see if it works. I'd really like to be able to update the system requirements section in the manual and on the site to say that the game has been successfully tested on both platforms, but I can't do it without some outside help.

If anyone's interested in beta testing it on those platforms, or any others I haven't thought of, please go to the site (http://thetravellersguide.ohgo.com/) to download it and then post whatever results you get on this thread. Much thanks and appreciation in advance for anyone's help! :)

And slightly off topic, if any of our many Windows users haven't tried the game yet, shame on you -- don't make me send Ink in here to poke you with a pointy stick... or something! *puts hands on hips* ;) More info about it can be found on this thread...

If it helps at all, I've been programming it with Visual Basic 6 using the DirectDraw 7, DirectInput 7 and DirectX Audio 8 interfaces. I have no idea whether the Macintosh supports those natively.

On Linux: Pentium-M 1.5GHz, 256MB DDR-RAM, Ubuntu, Linux kiku 2.6.10-5-386 #1 Fri May 20 13:52:48 UTC 2005 i686 GNU/Linux, Wine version 20050310.

Result: Doesn't work. At all. Message of:

"The installer you are trying to use is corrupted or incomplete. This could be the result of a damaged disk, a failed download or a virus."

Might have been a bad download, I'll try again.

[EDIT]

Installer works now, looks like it was a bad download as said.

However, it still gives an error later that says it can't access the registry, and the game refuses to run until the game has been configured properly.

Okay, that's sounding normal so far -- the game executable itself isn't supposed to run until after you've run the configuration utility to initially write the config file to disk for the game engine to then read. (Let me know if you have problems with running the config program. ^_^] However, it still gives an error later that says it can't access the registry,[/QUOTE]
Don't worry about that too much. The only thing that happens in the registry is that information is added about where the uninstaller is and whether the game is in the Windows Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs list. (Believe me, uninstalling is otherwise as easy as just deleting the game directory. ^_^ )

Uh, that "can't access the registry" occurs when I'm trying to run the configuration program.

Oh? O_o;; I had no idea that it's trying to do that... I didn't program it to! Maybe I should just send you a default config file that you can use (though I'll have to do it tomorrow when I have time), and in future releases I'll include it in the installer. Sorry about that... ^_^;;

Here you go! ^_^

http://tg.guildofredeemedgamers.com/Resource/TG.CFG

Just stick it in the same folder/directory that the two executables are in and you'll be ready to go -- you won't even have to run the config utility. :) (I do hope it works... ^_^; )

Now it says;

"Error loading DirectX 8 Audio: Music sound effects will not be used."

Then it quits with;

"Error loading DirectDraw 7: Application will terminate. Please see manual for troubleshooting details."

Well, I looked at my code and I couldn't find anything that I was doing wrong -- so I'm sorry to say that I'm not sure how I can help you out, except maybe to suggest trying a different video driver. I had the same problem with that DirectDraw error message happen on this computer, and I figured out that I had to downgrade the video driver to an older version before it would work. I don't know if you can do that on your end or not... but it's all I can think of. ^_^;

Well, can't be helped then. Windows gets bad drivers. Linux, worse :P At least when I get the official drivers, that is.

'Tis thread bumpin' time, Ah reckon! :lol: I personally gave my newest release of the game (WIP 3.1.2) a test with Ubuntu 6.06 under WINE not too long ago, and managed to get it into full screen (with no sound support) but then it immediately crashed with an "automation error" message. I'm thinking that both my sound and video drivers were bad, but I long gave up on it and am back in Windows again so I'll never know. :sweat:

If anyone here running any version of Linux would like to try the game under WINE, please feel free to post here and let me know if it works for them -- and how they got it working. I even made sure for this release that all the necessary system files needed to run the game are included. :)
