This series looks pretty good, any suggestions?

Looks like something I'd like: Robots, making fun of Go Nagai, comedy, drama, etc...

I very poorly remember seeing part of an episode on Cartoon Network a while back, but not enough to even remember if I liked it.

Tell me what you think. : )

Probably more of a love it or hate it series. It was kind of a mix for me, a lot of episodes I had a good time watching and even laughed my head off. But, there are a couple reasons hindering it from being one of my favorites:

1. I never really cared about the characters as much as other anime. I think the main reason for this is that the series has way too many characters, and there just isn't that much development.

2. Occasionally, they seem to drop the ball on the plot. Certain plot twists seemed poorly executed to me, and sometimes the actions of certain characters seemed to contradict their personalities and actions earlier made by them.

3. The ending sucks. As a matter of fact, it doesn't end. It pretty much just leaves you hanging.

4. The movie sucks. The movie makes no sense unless you've played the Dreamcast Japan-only videogame release. Only recommended for those die-hard fans or those who are fluent in Japanese and have actually played the game.

Again, don't let any of this actually deter you from seeing the series. I'm just too much of a critic for my own good. You will at least have an enjoyable time watching it. Just don't expect anything terribly deep.

Generally, endings that most people seem to hate, I like.
Cliffhangers and confusion are good for me.

I might check into it, I looked up Gyp's review, sounds cool.

This was the funniest series I've seen to date. I had to stop it several times because I couldn't breathe.

A really good series. Nothing earth shattering as far as plot, but I found the characters very enjoyable. And now at the cheaper Essential Anime price it's well worth the 3 volume DVD purchase.

I've seen the first nine episodes of this series and I like what I am seeing so far. The characters are interesting and I love the way they spoof anime with the Gekiganger element. Though while it's not heavy on plot, it does make for enjoyable entertainment.

And it's cheap to get too.

I enjoyed it, and liked the TV ending. I skipped the movie because I heard it was awful.

Some filler eps in the middle were tiring...

I am one of those freaks that liked the movie... I really want to play the dreamcast game! The show was great except for the last ep, because it ends WAY too fast after having dragged on in some eps... I thought at least the first half of the last episode was awesome... The Ai plot is finally resolved (no, I don't think that's a spoiler because I never said HOW it was resolved) and so much that had been hinted at was finally explained. It's just the last half of the episode, or maybe the last quarter...

Cartoon network execs should be shot for showing the 3 eps of the show that they did... They showed ep 1, ep like 14 or something and ep 25... The 25th episode gives away a lot of the secrets, like the identity of the Jovians, the shocking ending to episode 3 (there is NO way you saw that coming... that just doesn't happen in comedies...), and a couple other points (I'm not sure if it gives away the identity of the other guy pilot, but I think his introduction ep does that well enough... That bugged me, because I didn't see his intro until after I had seen the second to last DVD, so his identity was a surprise to me... Finding it out the first day he's introduced made it less interesting of an experience in my mind...

This show is a bit over the top in some aspects, and I am not a pacifist, so being PELTED (yes, pelted) by the pacifistic mantras were a bit annoying (what is it with pacifism being packaged in violent shows? Ruroni Kenshin, Trigun, Nadesico, even Mario RPG to a lesser extent) but the characters grow on you (though if you can't learn to love Gai, you probably should stop watching...) and the plot has some nice moments...

BTW, I am pretty sure that the only LEGITIMATE DVD set is the 6 disc set... Others are hong kong pirate sets...

I've been keeping my eye on this series. When I feel my credit card can handle it I'll import it from the US. Or Mars. Whichever is cheaper.

Just in case you didn't know, the Essential Anime sets are "budget" versions of older ADV titles. What ADV did with Essential Anime version of Nadesico is that they include two DVDs per volume, which is pretty much nine episodes in one purchase. So that's why there is a shorter volume set than the original release of Nadesico (which is a very good thing for getting this series cheap).

So Nadesico went "Essential" huh? How much money I could have saved... :stressed:

I looked up the Essential Nadesico DVDs. Only 3 DVDs for $20 a pop? I'm game.
Heck, that's cheaper than the 6 disc boxed set, which goes for almost $90.

Well, I shall get the first Essential DVD, and seeing as it has 9 episodes, I'll be able to judge if I like it from there.

I can't wait to see the Getter Robo parody, as I am a fan of those awful Go Nagai robot anime. (Speaking of that, Shin Getter Robo Armageddon is the most insane series ever made, moreso than even FLCL, though SGRA isn't exactly aware of its own insanity.)

Well, not Impact, but illuminousX51 did. Thanks for pointing it out. So are there (more or less) three volumes in the Essentials packages? Hmmm.

Besides the huge price difference, I'm sure the hte budget versions take out a few of the original extras as well. Geneon has a similar budget set called their "Signature Series", which is taking their same series at a lower price and slapping the huge red sticker on the top.

It's usually the same DVDs, but just packaged cheaper, with all the inserts yanked out. It's cheaper to make more copies of an existing master than to make a new master with less features and re-pressing it.

Basically these are titles that have fallen off and the company is drumming up sales.

Good question, Bob. Without commenting on pacifism directly, are they trying to make us feel guilty for watching their show?

Love the series, though. I hope you aren't disappointed, Impact, but I think you will have another series to talk about besides Giant Robo when you are done.

"Those awful Go Nagai robot anime?" I saw the series Go Nagai's Getter Robo complete at the video store. Trying to decide whether to rent it, I read some reviews, which made it sound somewhat nonsensical and stupid.

Is this true? Is it worth watching?

That's a bit steep. If you have a Best Buy near you they usually carry them for $12.99 a volume.

Aren't they R4 and PAL though? I remember looking at them over a certain movie that shall remain nameless because it's on the DND list...

The 6 disc box set I got was 40 bucks, and yes it is legit... It's the ADV 6 disc release in the same sort of horrible case as the sailormoon box sets... Those aren't as bad as multi-disc CD jewel cases, but they're darn close...

I'll have to check out this thing though, for other shows...

the series is excellent and i agree the ending need more closer unless it gets a sequal series *crosses fingures* but i highly doubt it since there has been no talk about it and its older.

The creator has explicitly stated that a sequel is now impossible due to unspecified circumstances.

I'm halfway through the series, so I can't comment on the ending. I've heard the movie sort of stinks, though.

Thanks, all, for the advice in this thread. I've been wanting to check out this series. I have a feeling I'll be heading to Best Buy soon. ;)
