In need of manga suggestions!

Postby Pepper Kittie » Sun Jan 16, 2005 10:55 pm

Hiya! Been a while since I've posted here, huh? I know the question's been asked countless times, but I still can't help but ask it... since I'm involved in making my own manga, Advocate, I need to be reading lots of other mangas to learn from. I love manga so very much, but... I guess I'm a tad picky ^_^; So that's why I need a bit of help. I'd like to read more mangas... something that doesn't have too much bad language, though I can take a bit of it. No nudity. And really, no magic either. I can't take too much of that... lol, though that cuts the available manga in half XD Though if it has a little bit it might be okay... I really, really need things to read and learn from. The only mangas I can actually read are Angelic Layer and DN Angel. I've read Pita Ten, and a lot of online mangas like Steelblood, Psychoteers, and KCome, but I'd like to buy some manga books, and I'd love a good, upbeat story. Not too gory either XD I'm sorry I'm so picky... but can anyone think of anything?

Lol, I was just going to comment it had been awhile.

Do you have your manga posted anywhere (although I don't read enough manga to make any good suggestions)?

Not many that can fit in with your criterion: Azumanga Daioh, Welcome to Lodoss Island, Comic Party, Urusei Yatsura. Possibly Excel Saga (though they have an appalling anti-Christian diatribe in the first volume :stressed: ) SHort Program by Mitsunu Adachi wasn't bad at all. Of course these are comedies and 2 of them (Azu Daioh and Lodoss Island) are 4 panel comics.

Have you considered Korean Manhwa? From what I've seen they tend to have a lot less vulgar material than a similar Japanese manga (I think Korean censorship laws are stricter).

I am currently reading 2 mangas that I highly suggest. One is X/1999 and the other is Blade of the Immortal. If you like action in your mangas as well as a good story line, check these 2 out.

Shoorajin:
Lol, it's okay ^^ I don't read much manga either... that's why I'm asking for suggestions XD Inkhana's hosting my manga at her site. I forgot that I hadn't posted about it on CAA yet ^_^; It's here:

Anime Heretic:
I was thinking that Azu sounded fun to read ^^ But I want to buy mangas that have different styles than four panel... but it'd be fun to pick up something fun just to laugh about. Thank you so much for the suggestions!

Spike:
I'll look into those. I'm going to the store today and they might have those there. Action and great storyline are my favorite things ^__^ Thank you!

have you read Fruits Basket? you might give it a shot sometime. it does have some language in it, but it's not that bad (to me). there's not really all-out -nudity-, but when they transform back from animal form, they don't have clothes on(which makes sense). but there are always clouds conveniently placed so nothing shows.

oh, try Hikaru no Go too. it's a cute manga and there's no language or violence in it (so far).

^o^/ I'd recommend Mythical Detective Loki and Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarok. It's clean, with very little swearing. The only element of the series that could be possibly objectionable is that the majority of the characters are mythological Norse gods - there is some magic, but very little, and most of it stems back to Norse mythology

Are you into sports? Whistle is an excellent manga. (It's about soccer.) There's no language or nudity at all, it's rated A (All Ages).

You also might try Kodocha. There's some minor language but aside from that it's a hysterically funny series.

You'd be suprised at how much manga there is that doesn't have to center on magic. Don't think that you're limited! ^__^

Um, Pretear is really clean. No nudity that I can think of (there is a magical girl transformation that, IMHO, is milder than Sailor Moon), and no language. I don't know how you feel about "magical girl" shows. Unless you think that spider-man uses magic, I don't see any reason why you should have any objections to any "magic" content in thie manga. Plus, the art is dool-ably gorgeous.

And I'd echo, Shi-hi's suggestion. Fruits Basket has some language, and a few little annoying things, but it's such a great story that I've found those things easy to over look. Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

You can also check out Rurouni Kenshin. It does get pretty violent though. Warning, Blade of the Immortal does get pretty violent and gory. The One Piece manga is good. One of my favorites is Lament Of The Lamb. It's pretty dark though...There's some harsh language...If I find any more I'll let you know.

also, somebody mentioned X/1999...that series is very gory, violent and dark. it also deals with some occult-type things and "psychic" powers. so you might want to steer clear. don't let the pretty art fool you. -_-

So you're the author of Advocate -- cool! ^_^ I did have a look at it some time last night and it looks really good. (Good allegory, too. :thumb: )

With your standards, I would also recommend staying away from X/1999. Besides the occult elements and extreme violence, it also contains overt homosexuality and several instances of graphic nudity.

*nods* I went to the store and looked at X/1999. It has good art and I like Clamp, but... I didn't think it looked like the right manga for me ^_^; But thank you all SO much for your kind suggestions! I'll look into the others next time I stop by the store. I picked up a really cute book called "More Starlight To Your Heart." I didn't find a review here on CAA about it so I was wondering... has anyone else read it?

Hee hee, yup, tis me, Melody Maker ^_^ I look forward to being more involved in CAA and getting a lot better. I hope to see you around here! Thanks for the kind words.
