Yeah, I subscribe to Shonen Jump so I'm paying for it through that. Though I'd like to have the GNs also. ^^ If I ever stop subscribing I'll buy the GNs.

Same here, regarding scanlations. When the graphic novels hit a certain number I'll buy the boxset. It's a series good enough to collect anyway :D Oh, and I suscribe to SJ and well.

My brother gets SJ too, but I only usually read Naruto and Hikaru no Go. What other worthwhile mangas are in SJ?

Well I really like One Piece. Yu Yu Hakusho is pretty good too, though I like the anime better.

Hmm, I'm gonna leave this thread and come back when I've caught up with you guys (I'm on chapter 130 or so), so I'll let you all get back on topic. ^^

Personally, I feel that most of the titles in Shonen Jump are worth reading, unless you truly are extremely busy. The exception would be Yu-Gi-Oh, though this is personal preference and it is highly possible they will skip much of the series to get to some more interesting arcs.

However, I would ask that this discussion cease to tangent and only be bumped when the time comes to discuss the next issue.

Nice to get to know Kakashi’s former team a little better. (And more Yondy! Yay! ^__^) Interesting that Obito is an Uchiha…is this Kakashi’s future sharingan source? (I don’t recall reading this before, but, looking into it, I found that the fact and branching, supposedly canon stories outlines have shown up on the internet as early as July this year; did I miss something?)

Not to be elitist or anything, but its been "known" that Obito was an Uchiha (or just about everyone agreed that was the case), and that the sharingan was an implant in memory or something *shrug*

Oh, good, someone's on who knows and I can interrogate. ^_~ I guessed that from what other people were saying elsewhere, but I'm curious as to where that came from. I've read through the entire manga and didn't find anything as to that. (I like theories for most any unfinished series, but I'm also wary of ones that can't give specific canon reference, just from past experience.)

Eh, I'm no expert, but here's my facts.

1) Look at Kakashi's old pictures with Obito, he has no Sharingan
2) Kakashi's scar on his sharingan eye, not to mention the fact that it can't close is "evidence" that it was implanted one way or another.
3) There's nothing of Obito's parents, hence they were killed (If Uchiha, then Itachi did the deed)

Those are what I gather, any others I can't think of from the top of my head.

When was it revealed before that Obito was an Uchiha? Am I missing a whole other flashback and everything with Kakashi's team? (That's what it feels like.)

I already knew that Kakashi's sharingan was not something he was born with, but I'm not seeing how this means he got it from Obito.

No, not at all. It's a bunch of analytical nerds like myself piecing stuff together. Assume that we haven't been told that Obito is an Uchiha and look at my facts. I think at least in some sense it gives evidence of it.

Okay then. None of the evidence you listed is new to me, but I guess, seeing that I didn't know Obito was an Uchiha, I just assumed the organ donor for Kakashi's eye hadn't been mentioned yet. Thanks for clearing that up.

Also, Kakashi mentions all those close to him were killed and yet we see him visiting only for Obito. I think that kinda foreshadows that Kakashi screwed up somewhere along the line (an accident) or killed Obito by accident or something, or at the least feels badly for what happened to Obito specifically.

But maybe I'm being too analytical for a manga :P

This is a very interesting chapter. Is it just me or does anyone else see some parallels in the personalities here? Obito <--- Naruto, Kakashi <--- Sasuke. I thought all members from the Uchiha clan were moody, quiet and cold but Obito sure threw me off a little with his personality. Anyway, now I think I understand how Kakashi could put up with Naruto and Sasuke. Been there, done that. LOL

There are so many possibitilities of what happened between Kakashi and Obito but I'm guessing they're going to parallel Naruto vs Sasuke. Either Kakashi accidentally killed Obito in an all-out duel similar to what Naruto and Sasuke did or Obito sacrifices himself for Kakashi in a mission where Kakashi screwed up bigtime, due to overconfidence or arrogance, thus "couldn't see it coming". Just my guesses for now. They will probably change as the chapters progress. Still, it's fun speculating.

Btw, it's nice see the 4th Hokage and Rina. ^^

Intriguing predictions. I do think that Obito was quite Naruto-ish for an Uchiha. I think than an accidental death would make Kakashi's past even angstier and more mysterious than it is already!

This was a very good chapter. It could be the start of a wonderful look into the past. I especially liked seeing Yondaime. Rina seems decent so far, but not nearly as charismatic as the young Tsunade was  .

I'm going to reread the chapter so that I can evaluate the characters more thoroughly... they seem interesting so far.

Anyone remember when Kakashi was said to have copied all of his techiniques except the Chidori? Not entirely true, is it?

The rock that Kakashi visits for Obito is the list of all those killed in order for their missions to be completed or something, so Kakashi's close people were probably not killed for that reason.

I presume that they are only considering techniques that are not commonplace. Of course, it could just be rumor as well.

This chapter convinced me that this side story will not be bad at all, or at least I am predicting that. Other than that, however, I do not have many comments. Young Kakashi is vaguely annoying.

I think, however, that unless a team was composed of three clones, any three person team could be comparable to Team #7.

I agree with your last comment.... Kishimoto's parallels between Team 7 and other teams are frequent and often heavy-handed.

Which brings me to a question that I've been thinking about.

Is there a reason why the teams tend to comprise of three members and of 2:1, male:female ratio? I might have missed something in the middle of the whole Naruto series. I think this is how the teams are formed in games like King Of Fighters as well. What's so special about trios? Some form of fighting strategy?

I think the only one team that did not fall in such a formation was Orochi's team --> only Anko. Aren't there any all male/all female teams at all?

First of all, this is out of how I've seen the teams. Physically, most of the females in Naruto are weaker than the males. That is probably to (in most cases, ShikaInoCho team being an exception ^^;) provide a voice of reason (which Sakura has to be often) and because males usually have more stamina than their female counterparts.

But most often because women seem to usually take support roles whether it be as medics or ranged. This is evident as with Ino with her Body-Mind Switch technique which gives them a psychological advantage as well as allowing Ino to use a person's far better physique against them. As well as with Sakura as she's taking the role of Medic, and with Tenten she provides the ranged element of a team with two very Taijutsu-oriented styles. The exception I see here is with the Sand-Nin team, as all have ranged aspects of ninja abilities. That is to say Gaara's is usually ranged (as no one wants to get close to him), as is Kankoro's, and same with Temari's.

As far as Orochimaru's team, Anko is the only one mentioned, though there are definitely more. At first, we didn't see the rest of Kakashi's team, but rather just knew that Yondaime taught Kakashi.

Several of the minor teams that took part in the Chuunin exams were all male if I remember correctly.

I believe that is true, though it has never occured with important characters. My take on it has always been that the ratios of persons interested in becoming shinobi must generally be 2:1, boys:girls. All of the Leaf Genin teams appear to be that way, so perhaps it is a policy of some sort. Either that, or Iruka has mysterious reasons of his own.

Not that it counts, but the Mist Rpg has the opposite ratio.

I kind of like the idea of all-male or all-female teams, but Kishimoto might throw in a few stereotypes with the all-girl teams. They'd probably all be like Sakura, and (no doubt) they'd all fall in love with Sasuke.

*sigh* He has produced several interesting female characters (Tsunade, Anko, Hinata, Temari), but Kishimoto's characterizations of Sakura, Ino, and half of Konoha all seem quite similar to me.

I'd still like to see an all-female team, however. ^^

Has anyone read Kishimoto's latest chapter (240)? It was a decent look into Team Kakashi... and Kakashi's past.
He had a rough past.... His father committed suicide because of a disgraceful event and Kakashi never mentions his father
Obito's starting to grow on me too. He's kind of like the underdog, but I like him almost as much as I used to like Naruto in the beginning. Maybe I sympathize with him because I often remember the fact that he's already.... dead.... :(

Yondaime's pretty cool too. He seems courageous.

Can't wait for more of Team Kakashi. Kishimoto didn't focus on Rina (Rin?) that much, naturally, but I hope to see more of those four.... ^__^

I think Yondy's my favorite in this arc. I've never been hugely crazy about Kakashi, and I didn't like him last chapter for the same reason I never really liked Sasuke (similar arrogant, selfish attitudes.) I feel I understand him a little bit better now, but I still can't get myself to like him...

I think I'll mourn for Obito when the time comes, though. I do rather like him. And maybe whatshername if we see more of her.

I kinda like how you have Obito who is an Uchiha and basically (in this case at least) useless, showing that not all Uchiha's are naturally strong ninja and that they're not all arrogant and jerks :P

But now you see why Kakashi calls himself and Sasuke the same (from when he said why he taught Sasuke personally). And now we have 3 teams that are paralled (sp?).

Naruto, Jiraiya, Obito
Sasuke, Orochimaru, Kakashi
Sakura, Tsunade, Rina

We really don't know that much about Rin(a)(hguiaiabaubiaiuarg?) to call it a parallel yet. As things turn out though, it probably will. It also probably has something to do with the fact that the teams are a bit like the offspring of the previous team, like so:

Sandaime > Jiraiya > Yondaime > Kakashi

Which then equals:
Jiraiya, Orochimaru, Tsunade > Yondaime + 2 > Kakashi, Obito, Rin(a) > Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura

So maybe it's hereditary..?

Well, they're not blood related (except for the fans who think Naruto is Yondy's son...), so I dunno about hereditary, but I think I see what you mean. It's possible; we take a lot after our mentors even if we don't realize it.
