Post your Original Christian Songs Here!

Postby CreatureArt » Fri Oct 29, 2004 9:14 pm

Well... I went through the long and hazardous task of checking all around this forum for a thread where people could post their own song lyrics (and chords, etc.) and didn't see any (though I could have missed if it was there - sorry if so... unless there's one in another board)...

So I thought it'd be cool for people to post their own Christian song lyrics/music/both to inspire others, get feedback, exposure... all that sort of stuff.

Here's one I made quickly today. It's not Beethoven or Lifehouse, but it'll do ;) . Hope you enjoy, anyhow.

Do you have a link somewhere that you can post for the acutal song? Is it recorded? That would be cool!

I suppose I could research a bittorrent seed thing on my server, if enough people wanted to participate in this kind of thing...

Lol - nope, I get scared by all that computer stuff so I tend to write it down in note form so that's what I stuck here.

Actually, I've got to admit that I'm playing around with a midi program trying to put some songs on it - but the lack of good dynamics (or at least, me knowing how to add them ;) ) is as annoying a cricket outside my window, prreeping all night. I might try another one.... Otherwise, I wouldn't really know how to host a song on a site so it begins playing.

Bittorrent...? Eek, I feel pretty unknowledgeable...

Thanks for your reply, though. :) , and your offer of a Bittorrent thing... even though I don't know what it is (feel free to laugh  ) - sorry about that.

That's OK. I've got quite a few songs that I've written that are on my website under my guitar chords section.
http://www.flactem.com/cgi-bin/homage.cgi?category=original

Most of them are there, but I don't have my recordings online yet. I'll get a round to that one of these days...

Creatureart, please tell me you didn;t just put beethoven and lifehouse on the same level. Please tell me you just didn't do that.

Sorry about that, PumpkinKorn... I wondered if anybody would notice. .

I do think Beethoven is pretty cool and a genius... but I enjoy Lifehouse's music waaay more. When I write songs I would love to emulate their style and amazing sound.

A week or two ago I woke up in an extremely un-Christ-like mood. I couldn’t get myself worked up over… well, anything. I was just in a funk over school and general boredom and how I would rather be back in bed. Thankful, God was kind enough to tap me on the shoulder and say “Excuse me, did you forget all this stuff I’ve done for you? What have you got be grumpy about?â€

Argh - have to get studying for an English exam today - but I'll edit this post and write a better comment on your awesome song in a bit.

For now, I just want to say that I think the lyrics rock - and when you've got some music to go with it, can you post that too, so I can see what it sounds like?

Anyway, I think that the song's awesome - and the introduction on how you started to come up with it is encouraging for those of us that feel like that sometimes, too (i.e me) and presents a challenge. Will do a better comment that is hopefully more understandable and explained etc. when I get back.

Rock on, musician!

:jump: :jump: :jump: Yaaaaaaaaaaaayyy!!!! Glad you liked it! I'll stick some chords up as soon as I figure out what they are. I know that it's an up-tempo, bouncy sort of song (I mean, it really wouldn't work as a dirge, would it?)

ROFL - no, probably wouldn't work as a dirge

I'll try to post some more lyrics here soon, too. Just getting through my 'avoidance-of-study-until-the-last-minute' routine of school exams.

Hurrah for all Christian musicians and those who just like to listen to Christian music and worship and praise God!

BTW, Blitzkreig - what instrument do you use to compose on? I tend to use the piano/keyboard.

To elaborate on the praise I was attempting to give you before I got to my English exam, I wanted to say that I love how the lyrics give the message that we're not perfect in an upbeat way - it gives the idea that although we're not perfect as Christians, no matter how we feel we should praise God and he still loves us even when we feel unlovely. I also love that it ends on such a positive note with: 'and all the great things you're going to do.' Those last two lines put the emphasis on God with remembering his works and looking forward to his new ones.

So, all in all - I love it!

To be honest, I tend to compose on sheets of paper  Seriously, though, I play guitar... and cello, but I don't write on it much.

Here goes -- my favorite song that I wrote (a couple of years ago), Gladly He Will Cheer Your Heart! ^_^

Lost you a friend or a loved one so dear?
Or must you face that which you most fear?
A pain in your heart which unmercifully sears?
Need you your sadness turned into great cheer?

Are you hard-pressed on yet every side?
Emotionally burdened and mentally tried?
Just want to run far away and hide?
Come to the Saviour, and in Him abide!

Have you met my Saviour Jesus?
In our deep distress He sees us!
From sin and death He frees us:
He's loved us from the very start.
If you never once have met Him
Then, from Him, by sin you're kept apart;
Confess your sin and trust in Him
And gladly He will cheer your heart.

Need you a shoulder on which you can cry?
Think you that no one will hear your sigh?
Do you just wish you could curl up and die?
Come to the Saviour; no one He denies!

Stand and take heart; the Lord will never fail.
Over the gates of hell He doth prevail!
Heals He the ills and pains from which we ail.
Jesus loves you: His name be forever hailed!
Come, o thou weary one and rest
In thy dear Saviour's arms so blest.
He shall ne'er forsake, nor His promise break.
Gladly He will cheer your heart!

One day the face of our Saviour we'll see;
And every distress, every woe shall flee;
Then we shall sing and rejoice with glee:
"Praise to the Lord; He forever shall be!"

The music for it is on the Melodies of Heaven section of my site, The BASIC FAQs (the same one that's in my signature). Please enjoy and be blessed.

Nine more words: I did indeed enjoy and was in fact blessed. :)

Awesome - thanks for the link, Riceball. Will have to check it out. Chinese/Christian isn't a combination I've run into regarding Christmas music before so it'd be interesting to check it out.

Riku - I wish I could read quitar chords! If you know the chord names and write them down I'd probably be able to get an idea of the sound, though. Anyhow, I can't believe you managed to type that up! Amazing! :)

Melodymaker - those words are just excellent. I love it. It's so encouraging - and reminds me somewhat of a modern hymn (though I'll have to listen to it's accompanying music to see if that initial impression lasts ;)). The words are so full of honest praise that it's really lifted my spirits - and the rhthym flows through the words.

A song I'm working on at the moment doesn't quite have an ending: I'm still working it out. Hopefully it'll end up as a bit of a narration-song, with a hopeful ending. Thus far:

V1
You rage against
The fools of ev'ryone
From the silence of your mi-ind.

Saying nothing
As they all live out
their empty shallow lives

CHORUS
Oh -
You're broken inside - Shattered glass
Can't live out your life - like this!

You try to share your pain - they run away.
And you're falling and learning - to hide always.

V2
You're so cold,
so brittle that you''ll break
at the slightest touch of pa-ain

Empty words
Cannot melt your frosted heart agai-ain.

CHORUS
(change line: 'you try to share' to 'they try to share your pain; you run away)

V3 (This very much in progress)
Healing now
The sting of memories
has now begun to fade

Reaching out
To those with ev'rything through this you've learned

So... in progress. Just fitting words to the rhthym at the moment, and trying to come up with a good last verse/ change v3 to make the transition from hurting to healer.

The song is inspired in part by many friends I have listened to and talked with who are really struggling. They feel so apart from everyone else, and sometimes resent those around them because of their inability to understand. The other half was inspired by God, who has brought me and my family through crisis and then strengthened us and allowed us to help others because - not in spite of - the crisis. So the end verse is to give glory back to God - (...perhaps change from a minor to major key to feel a bit more hopeful/resolved?)

So, it needs work but its coming along. :) . I'm also working on a couple of praise songs. :)

God bless and happy musicing!

Wow, that's pretty powerful (and real, too). The way the chorus switches perspective is especially well done. I really love songs that progress like that (and while I probobly should wait to see the chords before saying this, shifting from minor to major would be really cool)

I wish I could some more of my stuff up here, but finals are nest week, so I don't really have time to polish anything up right not (in fact, I probobly don't have time to be writting this. Oh well  )

...Well, I didn't QUITE fail anything, so I guess everything turned out alright.

Anyway, speaking of chords, I think it's about time that I put some up for that song I posted, like, 50 years ago. It helps to imagine it with some Beatles-esque hand claps, at least I kept imagining that when I wrote it. Anyway, here's the first verse.

--A-------------------D-----------E------------
I don’t feel like hurrah-ing this morning
--A-------------------C-----------D------------
I don’t feel like there’s a song worth singing
--A-------------------D-----------E------------
I don’t feel like shouting hallelujah
--A-------------------C-----------G------------
I don’t feel much like anything

--D----------E--------A------------------------
Lord, wake up this dead hear inside of me
--D----------E--------A------------------------
So I can love You like I know I should
--D----------C-------G------------------------
Don’t let me sleep through the blessings You pour on me
--G-------E-------------A----------------------
Pull me out of bed for my own good

the other two verses are the same as that one, so I won't worry about putting them up. The bridge is a little funny, though. Aside from new chords, the rhythm is sort of different from the rest of the song, kind of nursery rhyme, sing-along like.

----A-------------------------E---------------
‘Cause the God who put this whole world here
----D-------------------------E---------------
Says He’ll protect me from all fear
----A-------------------------E---------------
And His Son saved me when he paid
----D-------------------------E---------------
The price of all mistakes I’ve made
----A-------------------------E---------------
And the Holy Spirit’s in my soul
----D-------------------------E---------------
To give me peace and make me whole
----A-------------------------E---------------
I must be dead, stupid, or blind
----D-------------------------E---------------
Or at least two-thirds out of my mind
----C---------G---------------E--------------
To be so asleep that I couldn’t see…

And there it is, for better or worse. I think I'll have another one ready to show off in a few days.

"A few days..." if you call a month a few days. Sorry, it took a LOT longer than expected to pound this thing into shape. In fact, it's still kind of messy in a few spots. Here's the best part, though: it's a song about the struggle to get a song right! See, I have a habit of making the whole writting process a lot harder than it needs to be. On the one hand, I want to aviod a lot of the cliches of christian music, yet I also want to make sure that no one can miss the fact that is IS Christian, and of coruse I ALSO want it to be good and... Well, eventually it gets to the point where I realize that I've made the whole thing about me and my own rock legend aspirations instead of God. This song just follows that whole sequence of events.

How to Write a Christian Rock Song

Power chords: E---A----------D---B (repeat)

--E-----------------------A---------------------
I’m trying to write a Christian Rock song
--Am-------------------------------------
I thought I started out strong
----------B-------------------------------
But it’s taking way too long
--E-----------------------A---------------------
I’ve been wrestling with it all day
--Am-------------------------------------
But it won’t go the right way
-----------------B------------------------
There’s just too much it needs to say

F#m-------------B-------------------------------
Like how the God of Heaven and Earth
F#m-------------B-------------------------------
Saved me from my place in Hell through His Son
F#m---------------A------------------------------
And how I now live to praise Him forever more
D------------------B---------------------------------
But how can I fit that all into just one song?

E---A------------D---B-----------(repeat ‘em again)

--E-----------------------A---------------------
I’d gladly tell the whole world if I could
--Am-------------------------------------
But this tune’s just not that good
----------B-------------------------------
And I can’t think of words that rhyme
--E-----------------------A---------------------
I can’t get out from under this writer’s block
--Am-------------------------------------
Why won’t my brain unlock?
-----------------B------------------------
‘Cause I don’t wanna come off half-cocked

-F#m-------------B-------------------------------
When I talk about the God has promised me
-F#m-------------B-------------------------------
And the Holy Spirit living inside of me
-F#m---------------A------------------------------
Day and Night always preserving me
-D------------------B---------------------------------
Why can’t I squeeze just one measly song out of me?

E---A------------D---B-----------(repeat again, but then they CHANGE!)
G---C------------F---D-----------

--G-----------------------------C-----------------------
I don’t think I can write a Christian rock song
--Cm--------------------------------------------------
Someone please give me the Gong
-------D-----------------------------
‘Cause my will to keep going’s gone
--G------------------------------------C------------------
Lord, your own words are something I can’t touch
--Cm---------------------------------------------------
And I sure tried hard enough
---------D-------------------------------------
Letting go of that ambition’s tough

---Am-------------------------D-----------------------
Still, it would have been nice to hear that song about
---Am-------------------------D-----------------------
How glad I’ll be to spend eternity with you
--Am--------------------------C-----------------------
But how does anyone write a song like that…
--F----------------------------D------------------------
Hey, wait a minute! I think that this will do!

Taa daa! The moral: Don't try too hard! God's already delivered the gospel better than I ever could, so there's no reason to trip myself up by trying to top Him. (Am I the only one who struggles with this?)

Here's one of my things...The lyrics I write tend to be pretty dark so yeah...Dark but with a christian veiwpoint. This one is more of a dark poem thingy...I wrote an actual song but I can't find it right now...

The world is full of darkness, anger, and hate.
Men desire to wallow in their sin.
Plunging mankind into a hopeless existance.
Yet we dismiss man's inherent darkness.
Trying to dull our conscience.
Resulting in this apathy hate abounds.
"For pleasure" has become this fallen worlds motto.
Yet we do not notice this sewer.
We're to busy creating cathartic contentment
to do anything about this inherent darkness.
To wrapped up in ourselves to be a salve for a world writhing in agony.
To self conscience to make a difference.
I am one of these and I admit this.
God please pull down our defences.
Make us medicines for our sickened world.

And that is it. It's pretty dark...Which is kind of wierd because I'm a pretty laid back guy...But I like writing lyrics that'll stick in peoples minds...But yeah this is more of a poem thingy (though I was hardpressed to view it that way.)

Sorry I haven't replied to your posted songs here for ages, Blitzkreig. I really like what you've written. I'm starting to learn the guitar so hopefully soon I'll be able to really hear what your songs sound like! The lyrics are awesome and I'd like to see how the chords fit. :) . I like 'How to Write a Christian Rock Song' - in that while you were striving to write a song you really captured that longing to express thankfullness and praise to the Lord.

Nope, you're not the only one who struggles with trying to write a Christian song. I also find that often the things I write just don't seem good enough for Him, or I search around trying to find words and lyrics to praise and it doesn't come together; even though I really just want to praise God. Perhaps a lot of people feel that way.

I like your lyrics, too, TD. :thumb: . IMHO I don't think it's too dark, though - the last line 'Make us medicines for our sickened world' is basically a line of hope - it points out the wickedness in this world and asks the Lord for a change. That's awesome not just because it goes on to offer a solution (God using us to make a change) but that it also puts back the emphasis on God. By doing that, it makes God the solution to the problems. That's awesome, and so, I think, more light than dark. :)

Oh... and some more lyrics I made (more like received, though). It's not finished - (I still need a bit of a chorus though I have some ideas for a bridgy thing) - but I found that when I was in a really hard place, this song came out - and after it was written I realised that God was using it to minister to me. Pretty awesome, huh? It really showed me God knew how fragile I was at the time and showed me how much He loved me.

Just a single word
--------Am
Only a tiny step
---------F
I could take you down
---------Am
I could drive you back
---------F
But I wish you knew --
-------G
-- I just want to heal you.
-------------------D (all chords repeated throughout.)

I want to hold you close
When you are slipping away
Keep you someplace safe
'till there's a brighter day.
And I wish you knew --
--I just want to heal you.

And when the night is cold
and the world is dark
I want to be the one
with who (/whom?) you'll share your heart
And I wish you knew --
-- Oh, I hope you know.

(PS: I've tried to put some guitar chords in there. However -- when I compose on the piano I use apeggios on the left hand to accompany the tune with my right; so I'm not sure how the timing/sound of the guitar/ sound of a chord instead of an appegio might work. However, it might give a fair idea :) ).
(PPS: :wow!: Very long post. Sorry!)

Just though I'd give the tpic a friendly nudge so no one would miss out on all the awsome songs in this topic (oh, and mine too  )

I've actually got one that's kind of sort of done that I wanna show you all, but I'm not really going to have time to fix it up until next week. Ugh, writing papers... :waah!:

Y'all's stuff is really good guys. I finally got one song down that I've been working on for a while. It's not exactly Christian, but could I post it anyway? Oh and Blitzkrieg, do you have a strum or pick pattern for your songs?

I'm working on one to post up...I have it about halfway written...I started and then stopped. I think that it'd be fine to post your song Rachel...As long as the lyrics aren't objectionable...But yeah I'm pretty sure CA won't care.

You took the words out of my mouth, TD! :) . As long as the words aren't objectionable it's all right.

I'm still learning guitar chords - I've got C, D and G major down so far.. I'm going to work on three more from tonight.

It'd be awesome to see some more of everyone's songs - all the ones on this so far are excellent. :thumb: Keep it up, fellow muso's!
