Jealous Kind

Postby Shao Feng-Li » Sat Oct 30, 2004 5:24 pm

Artist: Jars Of Clay
Album: Who We Are Instead
Song: Jealous Kind

I built another temple to a stranger
I gave away my heart to the rushing wind
I set my course to run right into danger
I sought the company of fools instead of friends

Chorus:
You know I've been unfaithful
With lovers in lines
While You're turning over tables
With the rage of a jealous kind
I chose the gallows to the aisle
Thought that love would never find
Hanging ropes will never keep you
And your love of a jealous kind
Love of a jealous kind

Tryin' to jump away from rock that keeps on spreading
Solace in the shift of the sinking sand
I'd rather feel the pain all too familiar
Than be broken by a lover I don't understand
'Cause I don't understand

[CHORUS]

Love of a jealous kind, yeah
Love of a jealous kind
Love of a jealous kind

One hundred other lovers, more, one hundred other altars
If I should slow my pace and finally subject me to grace
And love that shames the wise
Betrays the hearts deceit and lies
And breaks the back of foolish pride

[CHORUS]

Love of a jealous kind
Love of a jealous kind
Love of a jealous kind

Jealous Kind is an awsome song. The words alone are powerful. When backed up my the music- and real music, not the cheap stuff made in the synth.- it's even more so. The piano, beautifuly and the gospel chorus...

I haven't heard many songs mentioning our jealous God... And the turnnig over tables... the story when Jesus turned over the tables in the church when they had made it into a market.

The last verse is the best. "Love that shames the wise" makes me think of when Jesus wouldn't sit with the pharasies. Many people say to fallow our heart, when all we have are it's deciet and lies- Adam fallowed his heart and look where it broguht humanity... and men like Stalin or Hitler. I love how it speaks against arrogance and how foolish it really is when we take pride in what we do, instead of giving God all the credit.

God is a jealous God, and has every right (duh). When people have many, have accomplished something great... what right do we have to be jealous of them? Who was the reason behind their success? Not themselves.
God Created the world and everythign thereof. What have we ever done?

Now why did I write this? Now that I think aobut it I really don't know. I just felt I had to share this.

Edit: Perhaps I should include "What do you guys think of the song?" so what do you guys think of the song?

Definitely a very awesome song, it's my fave track on the album. I always get goosebumps at the point where the gospel choir comes in and I've been meaning to learn to play the piano part. Unfortunately, I'm kinda guilty of not really processing the lyrics, I tend to do that with both Christian and secular music. I did notice the 'turning over tables' line though and your analysis is interesting. I'm definitely going to have to sit down with the lyrics and give that song another listen.

*bows* It is the best track indeed. I to get the goosebumps. By analysing lyrics you really get to know the artist. How superficial they maybe be. I much they want to glorify God, ect. Seualar is very superficial (skin deep) because they don't glorify God. I hate when Christian music is like that. You can hear it in the music.
As example, Kiss of Heaven is one of the worst. And listen to the music. it's not absorbing, but a studio midi it seems. And the lyrics are so feel good, but skin deep.
"I'm living under the kiss of heaven and i'll nevewr ever be the same again." sure ti's true, but what about God's soverienty? How about He is King? What about him choosing us before the foundtraions of the world? How about the fact that He's a Jealous and angery God, only, faithfuly loving His own? Music doesn't need to be an entire band to sound deep. I simple guitar can pull you in.

In Who We Are Instead, all the music is absorbing. The music in Sunny Days alone will make you happy, nevermind the lyrics. It helps a whole lot that the guys are musicians. The music in Lesser Things is absolutely awsome. Who ever it is can really play that steel guitar. In Show You Love you can hear details liek the string's vibrations. The music in Faith Enough, my not be big and loud. IT kind of mild methinks. But even in the beginning when you hear the quiet beat, you find youself tapping you foot- and that steel guitar is so cool.

I guess there's really nothing superficial about this album.

ONLY ALIVE

I'm a fair-weather friend
I'm a colorless view
But i'm willin' to make a deal
If you think you can make some faith here inside
I'll drive off and marry you

Chorus:
I'm only alive with you
I can't get by and i won't get through
So put me in the river and let me say I do
I'm only alive with you

You're a sight for sore eyes
And a newborn cry
In a year where there are so few
If you throw me a line, I'll show you in time
I'm fallin' in love with you

[CHORUS]

Though my heart has been torn
The loves I have worn
And I'm tempted by them ever still
I tremble inside when you walk in the room
You hold my affections and will

[CHORUS x 2]

This to is an awsome song, and it talks about be married to Christ. Not soemthing that A lot of people sem to want top sing about.

"so put me in the river and let me say I do."

Being baptised/ being made clean by Christ. and "Say I do" is being saved. The church is Christs bride. *Please if I'm getting scriptures mixed up let me know!!!

"The loves I have worn
And I'm tempted by them ever still"

That how even though we're saved we're still tempted by things we used to love, whether it be television, computers, pornography, adaultery... ect. And God makes us hate those things more very day while we fall in love with Him.

And let's not forget that we're only alive with Him. Just because you can breathe doesn't mean you are alive.
