Newbie to Manga...

Postby stitchedlamb » Sun Oct 03, 2004 6:54 pm

Hey

I'm really into Western comics, and my interest in Manga has been piqued. The only problem is that there are so many mangas, and many seem to be kind of iffy, so I'm looking for some recommendations. I'm not one of those Christians that are like "GASP-EH!!!" at every little thing, in fact I've been drawn to mangas like Priest and Helsing. Unfortunately, while the idea of a protestant vampire is kind of cool ( and my crush has an awesome Alucard outfit) I can't really justify the theology I guess. Anyway, any good mangas out there without having porn/yaoi, being occultic, etc....that someone can point me to? Oh, and I'm not into the whole robot/Gundam thing either. Sorry if I sound picky, just trying to be more specific.

Anyway, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

You sound kinda like me...I'm not easily offended either.

Anyway, a little help please? Okay, so you're not into the robot thing. Kewl. But what ARE you into? Action, magical girl, romantic comedy, I mean, give us some ideas.

But before that, go post a welcome thread so we can properly welcome you!

Heh. Sorry.

Hmmm....I like fantasy/action, monsters/beasties, romance is cool too. Oh, and I'm big on anthros, though alll the anthro comics I've seen so far are overly horny :stressed:

Thank you! I've heard of Naruto before (yay for foxes), and I think Fullmetal Alchemist, I'll have to check out these other titles. Again, thanks for your insight! I really apprciate it.

One of my current favorites is Lament of the Lamb. It's dark, no nudity, and no questionable religion. If you do read it, just know they swear, and that there is one freaky lady. Her brother says, "You are such a twisted woman."

The only monster currently evident is said lady.

For fantasy/action, try Jing: King of Bandit.

I've actually looked at Lament of the Lamb, and it seemed interesting. Thanks for pointing it out, I'll have to give it a second look, as well as the King of Bandit.

Thank you!

Yeah, isn't that the one about two brothers and one dies and gets resurrected into some machine type thing? Or is that something else? Anyway, thanks for the offer. I've got some manga research to do tomorrow ^_^

Okay.

FRUITS BASKET!! Oh, I love this manga. You really should read it. Everyone should for that matter.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

Um... If you like action, you should try Rurouni Kenshin. What else?

I recommend One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, Rave Master, Case Closed, Shaman King, Hikaru no Go, Yu Yu Hakusho, Rurouni Kenshin and Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle. That should give you some titles to work with. You could try browsing through http://www.shonenjump.com. They have a good selection of shonen/action/adventure manga.

Yes, it seems that Naruto has been recommended a lot. In fact, I asked the president of our anime club at school if he knew of any anime (or in this case manga) with foxes in it, and he gave me this title. I'll have to give it a second look. Thanks!

Here's a tip. All of those replies could have (and should have) been done in only one post. That way, it saves a lot of space and won't annoy the moderators. Double posting is frowned upon at almost all internet messageboards.

If you need you have any questions about any of the mangas suggested, feel free to PM me or pretty much anyone else who responded. We're glad to help.
