Favorite Death Scene

Postby Hitokiri » Fri Aug 06, 2004 1:15 pm

Sure death can be scary but in anime/manga, it can be just downright cool how a character goes down fighting or in a neato way. For me its a tie between Haku and Zabuza from Naruto. To be specific, it's from the manga. I almost cry (i get choked up) every single time.

so whats yours?

NOTE: THIER WILL BE SPOILERS!!!!!

Lala Ru, Boo/Soon from Now and Then, Here and There
Ryoko (If she had stayed dead) from Tenchi Universe

SPOILER!!! (how do you do the spoiler tag???)

------------------------------------------------------

Wolfwood from Trigun easily takes the cake. Haku & Zabuza from Nauto was also really good.

Spike went out in good o'l dramatic noir fashion. Yeah I almost didn't believe it when I saw Wolfwood die.

*ROFL*

True! Thank you!

My favorite:
Roy Fokker's death in Robotech / Macross.
I was quite a bit younger then, so I was easier to influence. It was the first time a cartoon hero of mine died.

Lol oh man I forgot all about that termyt! I was young too when I saw that and I think it was also the first anime hero I saw die. And I just ordered the Macross saga two days ago can't wait to see the series again.:thumb:

I'm a fan of Haku and Zabuza too (and especially Haku.) I don't think I could choose between them; their deaths just completed each other.

Besides that...hm...Meiran in Gundam Wing Episode Zero. Hoo, that really got me.

I think one death scene that was good and sad at sametime was in Escaflowne
Folken gets angry at Dornkirk. Dornkirk says to go ahead and kill him. Folken pulls out his sword and the armor around Dornkirk is removed. Dornkirk beckons Folken to attack him. Folken flies up and drives his sword through Dornkirk's head. It goes right through him and shatters on the steel below. The end of the sword strikes Folken in the chest. Folken says the war will now end and falls to the ground dead. Van realizes what happened and thinks of his brother. He destroys another Guymelef and screams out in sadness.
I was really upset when, in season two of Digimon, Black Wargreymon died. I thought he might make it. After all, he became a good guy. He was my favorite Digimon character. Right after the first time I saw the episode, I talked to my best friend, who had watched it too, on the phone for hours about it. I'm glad she was there to comfort me.

Also, I haven't actually seen the episode, but I've seen bits and clips of what happened in Trigun when Rem died. I felt so sad for Vash! And poor Rem!! :sniffle:

Well, favorite meaning it affectd me the most would definately be in Grave of the Fireflies... I mean, I was in shock for about 10 minutes because I couldn't believe it actually happened...

Other than that, um in Sailormoon classic
There are a lot of emotional deaths in that one... Nephrite was sorta sad. Naru's first love, but he had to be out of the way obviously... Then came Makoto's death... She just cared about protecting Sailormoon, and her live was pretty much ruined as it was because her position, so she gets killed saving Sailormoon.. It was great seeing her take out two of those youma, even if that meant she was going to die in the process... Minako and Ami weren't really sad, because everyone could see it coming, though Ami's death was rather cool... Seeing her get so agressive, it was a different part of her personality... Taking her computer and smashing the crystal was great. When Rei died, however, i think that was really emotional because she knew she was going to die, and she said her peace with Usagi after they had fought so bad... Plus, she took out the remaining two youma. The saddest death was, of course, Mamoru (aka "Tuxedo Kamen (mask)" Though it doesn't show from the rest of the show, Mamoru and Usagi were really in this sorta angsty relationship... I mean, he was sorta a "protective villain " at the beginning, but when he realized who she was finally, he gets kidnapped and drained of his personality... of course. When he finally gets his mind back, he dies killing Beryl... The thing that I hated most about the American Dub of Sailormoon is that all of these things were taken out. The four sailors were "kidnapped" (and yet fight as "ghosts" later) and Mamoru just sorta disappears, Baryl doesn't die from mamoru's rose, and Metalia is just "Beryl's transformation" or the "Negaforce" and not a personality... They screwed up season one so bad... It hurts me to even hear ignorant dubbie fans talking about season 1... The next saddest moment was in season 2 when Prince Saphir died
I don't think this is really a spoiler, so one of my favorite death scenes is Rubeus from Sailormoon R... I know a Christian shouldn't believe in Karma or celebrate revenge, but it was just so great to see all that crap coming back on his head... In their favor, Sailormoon did try to save him, but it just couldn't have happened...

Hmm... Other shows... Macross Plus. The big death scene (I think there is only one...) is very sad... It's best to watch it in the movie, because they actually, you know, showed the death, unlike the OVA, and the score (music) is better in the movie than in the OVA... Also, make sure to watch it SUBBED... Voices is crap crap crap crap crap in English... Translating songs is a sin, or at least it should be... and a crime...

I know there are more than that, but that's all I can think of...

Would have to say the one from Fushigi Yuugi.
Nuriko dying in Episode 33.
The entire episode was dedicated to him, interweaving the battle with the flashbacks and the what-if scenarios if he had existed in our world. No other anime death had hit me quite so hard. (Well, except the almost-one from Vandread, but it turns out she didn't really die anyway, thank goodness).

Oh, I forgot another. The one from Haibane Renmei, when _____ died at the very end of the last episode. What I loved about it was that her death wasn't shown to be the loss of a life but instead as an ascension to another world. Beautiful.
My favorite scene is near Zabuza's death (after Naruto's monologue) but not the actual death itself. Still, good stuff.
There are a few others, but they will not come to mind at the moment...

If it counts, probably the scene in Kill Bill where O-ren Iishi kills boss Matsomoto (I think that was his name) because it was the funniest overuse of gore I have ever seen (plus that guy had it coming to him, KILL BILL RULES!) If not, then definatally one of the many bloody explosions from Akira (can't have a good action film without a bit of violence :D)

Wormmon's death in Digimon...
Heart of Sword's Rhapsody

Money, get away
Get a good job with good pay and you're okay
And all and all you're just another brick in the wall
Shoutin’ in the street gonna take on the world some day
But Bismallah will not let me go
Because I'll see you on the dark side of the moon

Tommy used to work on the docks
Union's been on strike
Bright eyes burning like fire
And exposing every weakness
However carefully hidden by the kids

Who will love a little Sparrow
Who's traveled far and cries for rest
Spare him his life from this monstrosity

I've seen a million faces and I've rocked them all
And if the band youre in starts playing different tunes
We will we will rock you
We will we will rock you!

Actually, I was thinking of something from that same movie just now..
I was pretty angry when Misato got coldly gunned down, though the culmination of her shouta complex was rather disturbing as well (when she kissed Shinji) It's funny, though... I was more upset by a man having a relationship with a young girl (Ikari what'shisname and Rei) than I was by Misato going after Shinji... I guess it's just that saturation in our mysandrist culture...
I've allready voiced my opinion on that whole thing... You can find it here on CAA's archives and probably somewhere on G4TechTV's archives as well...

I realize that I will be somewhat off topic in this post, and though I will apologize, I still post. It applies vaguely to the concept of the thread, though it is certain not anime. That, however, has already been broken.

The historical death of Dirk Willems. When I heard it the first time (from a master storyteller) it nearly brought tears to my eyes.
