This Week's big news, the new Pope

Postby SierraLea » Wed Mar 13, 2013 3:31 pm

I tried to listen over the radio, but couldn't hear. Did anyone find out who got the position?

Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina, now Pope Francis, is now the supreme leader of the Catholic masses. But in EVEN BIGGER news, Commander Chris Hadfield of Canada took command of the International Space Station at 5:10pm EDT today.

Also, why is this in the entertainment section?

because it was all over the news, radio, and internet. Otherwise I would have posted it in the religious section.

As a Canadian, this is indeed more important to me. Can't believe I got to shake his hand, let alone have him serve me a piece of cake. That man is awesome.

Oh, yeah, the new pope. Well, I certainly didn't expect an Argentinean to fill the roll. I wonder what his position on the Falklands is, after that little spew from the country's leader.

In an effort to keep this neutral, I'm just going to say that I hope his choice of name means that the Vatican will soon be filled with friendly talking animals.

Yay! New pope! And btw, UC, Francis of Assisi isn't the only St. Francis. We also have a Francis Xavier.

I think he said he was naming himself after Frances of Assisi specifically though.

It's not... It's in the general section.

I don't think Catholics hate science. Pope John Paul II said that evolution was real. There are some Catholics (and other non-Catholic christians) who are anti-science though. Subtle differences, but differences none-the-less.

I think its awesome that you guys have a new pope, its a remarkable event. What I don't like is the exorbitant amount of media coverage its getting. Its all I've heard on talk radio for a week and a half, and its probably gonna get a week more. It's a momentous occasion and all, but not so much to all the non-catholics out there. In a month most people won't even remember the whole thing, so the excessive coverage of it is just annoying to me.

He did, yeah. But it was meant to be a lazy joke, not a serious statement on beatification.

The media has its priorities skewed in general, though. They'll spend a large amount of time on anything that's sensational, so it's not like this problem is specific to new popes.

The nicest thing I can say about this guy is he looks like he's at least slightly better than Ratzinger. That's not saying much, but it's the best I can do. Still, slightly better is still better, so that's something.

He looks like a pretty good guy from what I've heard/read. Not that it personally means much to me (I'm not catholic) but still, that's besides the point.
