Too Much New Manga Coming Out At Once!

Postby brantelg » Sat May 29, 2004 5:53 pm

I am not happy that SO much new, good manga is coming out at such a rapid speed. I can't keep up with all that I want to buy! For example: I went to the store and saw a bunch of new mangas i wanted such as Gundam Seed, Gundam Seed:ASTRAY, Prince Of Tennis, Rurouni Kenshin vol. 3 and 4, Big O vol. 6, and many more! I am just getting tired of not being able to buy the mangas that i want because it gets so costly. Anyone else running into this problem?

I know what you both mean. I remember when I'd go to my local bookstore and stare forlornly at the manga shelf (yes, singular) because there was nothing I hadn't read before, and now it seems like there's a whole section just devoted to Japanese comics! There's stuff released up to, say, volume five that I never heard of before and I feel happily blown away.

But, yeah, when you're really stuck on one series, I know what it's like to feel as if it'll be forever before the next issue comes out.

Oh, I'll never complain about the amount of manga being released. That means there's always something I like available.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

I like it because it means that manga is becoming more popular here, and there are lots of diverse titles for everyone. For example, my friend used to think manga was stupid because she could never understand it, then I introduced her to Azumanga Daioh and she loved it. Personally I like the fast speed, because that means that the titles you like will come out faster. The money issue is tough, but I suppose it costs more money to translate and print comics.

I've noticed that sometimes the manga I like tend to come out in bunches, so I buy a bunch at once then have nothing to buy for a month. Or they're not released very often (.Hack). I need to get into a new series but I'm pretty picky in terms of what I buy. I can rent anime, so I tend to see a lot more anime than manga series, and I will rarely buy the manga if I can see/have seen the anime series.

Manga is usually cheaper than anime, the short term effects at least, which is why I currently own more manga than anime.
I do know what you mean however...

Another relatively annoying problem is the often inconsistancy of the book store's manga supply. If it's a long series especially, they often won't have the volume that you are looking for.

I might buy the second or third volumes if I don't have the first, but I'm not going to buy Volume 11 of a 30+ volume series if I haven't read the previous ten volumes.

I know what you mean, MasterDias. If you find you REALLY can't get the next volume you need, you can probably have it ordered. That's what I'd do.

It does make me sad when I see like 5 different manga I want to read...usually I can only buy about one or two a month -_- So I'm trying to just stick to one or two series at a time for now. (Fruits Basket and Rurouni Kenshin, and NGE too but they take forever releasing that one)

I agree with brantelg...there too much manga coming out at once. I remember when there was barely even anything on the shelf, like Aka-chan said...but now at my borders, there are shelves...it's kind of scary now that I think about it. And of course the money issue. I remember just last weekend I had fifty bucks in my pocket. Now an Azumanga Daioh DVD and two volumes of Love Hina later, I'm flat broke >_>

Ya, Manga comes out waaay too fast for me to keep up. Heck, I havn't even picked up Shonen Jump 17# yet.

My list keeps growing because all of these new, awesome titles come out that I just GOTTA HAVE!

My List:

.Rurouni Kenshin Vo.1-5
.Naruto Vol.3
.Jing:King Of Bandits Vol.5-6
.Gundam 0079 Vol.7-9 ((It's taken me forever to finish up this series because I've found so much other great mangas lately))
.Sgt. Frog Vol.1-2
.Hikaru No Go! Vol.1
.Gundam Seed manga
.Gundam:The last Outpost
.The Big O Vol.6
.Gundam Origins (I've really wanted to get into this one, but havn't managed to yet)
.Escaflowne Vol.1

There's more, but I can't think of anything else right now

I manage the money problem by buying the original Japanese tankouban on my own (if you get old stuff, you can get it for as low as a dollar a volume if you know where to go), translate it on my own, and then occasionally skim the English versions at the bookstore or borrow from my friends that have them to double check the info. That's another reason I read manga a good bit more than I watch anime. ^_^

Personally, when I find that there's no volumes left to buy for a few months, I have historically branched out into another manga series. Hence how I managed to go from Rurouni Kenshin and Full Metal Panic! to Samurai Deeper Kyo, then eventually to Ai Yori Aoshi to Azumanga Daioh. Sadly though, it does mean that I have to shell out more money in order to keep up with the series I'm trying to read (worse still, I about started on Excel Saga when I couldn't find FMP vol 4 or RK 4 on the shelves in my town--that would have just compounded things, but I bought something else instead. Save Excel Saga for later.).
To all, life thou givest, to both great and small.
In all life, thou livest, the true life of all.
We blossom and flourish as leaves on a tree
And wither and perish, but naught changeth thee.

WOW! You can Translate! Cool! I am hoping to eventually be able to do that. I start college this fall, intending to major in Japanese, Spanish and International Studies, eventually.

I have a list of Manga that I am getting. I have it in order of priority, which means if I have to chose between x and y whichever one is of higher priority gets bought. I also keep a list of release dates.

List currently has 8 mangas continually coming out,
3 with one left,
2 that are who knows when the next comes out.
and 1 I hope to get on a splurge since they are all out
Total list of 14 manga series. I have already completed 2.
There are many other series that I would like to get but, oh well.

The only reason I can afford to keep up with them is that I have a paper route, mow lawns and pretty soon will have my summer job. Pretty soon though I will be a poor college student who hopes to have socked away enough money to finish the series he has started through college.

I really need to get a rhythm going with my manga. Right now, every series I'm readying comes out every two months and in the same cycle, so every two months I shell out a bunch of cash, and then I sit around, counting the days until the next manga release.

Besides, what ever happened to monthly manga? Maybe I'm crazy, but I thought most manga (especially Tokyopop's) came out on a monthly basis. Now all the sudden it's two months apart. AHHH!!!
