Shoma, you're a real man. The only real man in this show.
I hope you didn't die.
This brings up some more interesting tension to the characters. I wonder if we'll get another penguin hat....

Hopefully, this means we'll be seeing substantially more of some of the other characters.

Ringo is crazy because she wants to save her family and is doing things at the behest of her future diary. Conceptually, this is pretty much the same as doing crazy things at the behest of a penguin hat with invisible penguins at your disposal. One of my earlier guesses was that she was the owner of the fourth penguin and that we couldn't see it yet, but obviously, that won't work anymore.
And Celty has the other half.
All anime is connected!
Also, did anyone catch which half Ringo has left? I missed it the first time around. For dramatic appeal, I'm guessing she lost the ending.
As for motorcyclist, it could be three people, I'm guessing. Either Kanba, Natsume, or guy/lady with the pink hair in the opening.
This is actually what I thought.

Anyways, I'm kind of torn on whether or not Shouma is dead. On the one hand, Kanba survived being drug by a truck. On the other hand, there was a conspicuous lack of survival strategy this episode, which I think may be important.

Also, guy, remember, no spoiler tags necessary concerning what's been in the show.

Guy/Lady with the pink hair has the penguin goddesses' eyes.

I vote the accident at the end of 8 gives Ringo a bit of a call back to sanity, whether it makes a difference in the long run or not.

...btw, is it ok for me to barge in halfway like this?

Yes, feel free to join in.

Lots of good stuff in this episode. And, we've got all the characters covered now.

In terms of style, I think this is the most abstract and fantastical it's been outside of SURVIVAL STRATEGY sessions. I think this episode has been the closest to Utena in style rather than the usual structure or hijinks (which, is interesting because it's an episode that doesn't fit into the usual structure at all). It's also hard not to make the comparison after the bride stuff. And of course, Sanetoshi is very similar to Akio in terms of his role and general demeanour. There are some really fantastic shots in this episode too, many of which are also very Utena-like.

Episode 9:

Wow.

I mean, it is a bit annoying that we have to wait until next week to find out what's up with Shouma (...talk about drawing out the tension! *shakes fist* :P)-- but, holy crap, this episode really made up for it!

Between the great backstory on Himari and the red/blue girls, and all the stuff with the dude in the library (which was simply fascinating), it was excellent.

In other words, after having not really enjoyed the previous ep., this has just brought me back into full-on fan-mode! :jump: Can't wait for next week!
Saved by grace.

Guy/[s]Lady[/s] was creepy, then slowly got less and less creepy, then got mega creepy. Nice catch Himari.
I'm with Ms. MR, the library was fascinating.
However, I'm wanting to see the effects of the crash, but I have to go through a whole nother work week before Ep. 10 comes out! Argh!

Something that I can't believe I forgot to mention was that there's another show that has surreal visuals like the ones in this episode. If you were wondering what Bakemonogatari looked and felt like, this is a pretty good episode to watch. The episode director is Takeuchi Nobuyuki, who was the visual director for Bakemonogatari and has worked on Utena too.

The pink hair guy is apparently the librarian inside Himari's heart?

I am okay with this.

In regards to creepy factor, I suppose he kind of was a bit unsettling (I didn't think so), but who do we have to compare him to? Ringo, the queen of creepiness. *shudders*
Agreeing with Blkmage in terms of this episode being the most Utena-like of the bunch thus far. The style, while very different from the rest of the episodes, wasn't too outlandish for us to have to suspend our disbelief too far.
(side note on that Utena tangent, Masako keeps reminding me of Juri, in looks, at least. Also, I like Sanetoshi better than Akio. Maybe it's the hair.).

I'm incredible happy they introduced Himari's childhood friends and how they tie into everything. It was staring us right in the face and we had no idea.

Also, I feel a bit guilty for being happy when they mentioned, "Shoma's been in an accident."
If he was dead, they would have said so. Please don't die, Shoma. D8

I am also jumping in late, but I started my slow late jump weeks ago. :I

Anyway, it's cool to see the blue- and red-haired girls vaguely connected into the main plot, instead of just being background. I wonder if they'll become more important later? Maybe they're in league with the sniper girl. Or each has her own penguin hat.

The pink-haired guy didn't seem that creepy to me.

And I want to see what happens with Shoma (or Shouma?). D: If he dies, maybe someone will try putting the hat on him to see what happens. Or find another hat, like Goldy said.

A sibling of mine also started getting into the show, so I've re-watched some of the early episodes. It seems much of what was shown in episode 9 occurred in-between scenes in episode 1. (If I recall correctly.) Also, in the beginning, Kanba seems to catch onto the whole penguin thing pretty quickly, which makes me wonder if he knows far more about the penguins than has been shown. Or maybe he's quicker on the uptake simply because one of the brothers had to be.

Looking forward to next week's, and really hoping Shoma doesn't end up dead.

I actually don't think the episode is a flashback. The events depicted could have happened that way, but they are not the actual events themselves being played for us. Rather, they're part of a dream that Himari is currently having and the big indicator is that the penguins are already numbered.

Ah, I didn't remember them being numbered. You're probably right, then.

They seem more than just vaguely connected to the plot. In fact, their presence is defining (and may continue to define) Himari's character throughout the series. They have always been there.
Now I'm rather curious if there's a pattern in the subway ads they make. I know it often ties in with the episode, but there may be something more...

The pink-haired guy didn't seem that creepy to me.

*high fives a fellow Shoma fan*
Out of all the characters that could die (not that I want any of them to die), Shoma would be an interesting choice, but I'm not sure how much it would gain in the long run to have him terminated.
(But sheesh, watch him die and come back as #2 penguin)
And pink hair guy's creepiness may increase if/when we discover his motives and actions a bit more. Right now, he's only a figment of a memory and dream of Himari to us. Is he in the real world? And if so, what is his plan?
(if he shows up in peacock feathers, I will lol.)

Oh shoooooooooooooooooooooot.

Looks like Ringo isn't the only crazy one and it looks like Project M might actually mean the same thing for everyone, especially given the SURVIVAL STRATEGY there at the end.

Episode 10...

First things first: THANK GOODNESS, Shouma's alright!!! :jump::jump::jump: (Though, I must say, I *am* getting a little suspicious now about both of the brothers' apparent immunity to serious injury... :eyebrow: I mean, I had figured that there might be something of the kind going on with one of them, due to that whole pulling-something-out-of-one-of-their-chests-during-the-very-first-Survival-Strategy thing; and, at the time, I had assumed that was Kanba. Now, though, I don't know what to think about that at all...! :dizzy::sweat:)

Second: Well, Ringo does care about Shouma after all! ;) Not quite sure what to think about her quote in the little next-time-teaser at the end, though, but whatever-- I suppose we can't expect her to change all at once, and anyway at least she got *some* character growth out of the whole thing. :)

Third: Okay, so 'assassin-girl' is apparently an obsessed mental case, as well, only she's obsessed over Kanba. But what does she need the diary for?

Fourth: Ah, I had wondered when this would come up, since the little revelation last week-- and here it is, confirmation that Himari *is* in love with someone! I wonder who it is? In fact, could it possibly be...

...Fifth: NEW CHARACTER-- + ALSO A PENGUIN HAT!!! :o
Saved by grace.

+1 on Rusty's character type assement scores. Ringo isn't purely psychopathic. Well, I don't really believe she was crazy in that sense at all. Just a person pushed past her limits.

So project M... Is the diary a "recipie" to manifest the penguin diety? Kinda makes sense since "penguin-hat-guy" (for lack of a better name for said diety, pHg for short) is apparently taking hold of people's loved ones and using them as a leash/goad. If you live like they are for an extended period, of course you'll go off the deep end. Just a theory though.

This is going to sound super cheesy but I absolutely love love love the fact that Ringo is trying to not be a terrible person anymore. One of my absolute favorite things is where not only does someone behave incredibly admirably, but when it shows others try to better themselves because of someone else.

On another note, this episode had less visual flair than the typical Penguindrum episode(though still slickly produced). I am going to assume this has to do with how nice the last episode looked.

Episode 10:
(disclaimer, I accidentally loaded the raw version of this and didn't want to waste another three hours loading the sub on my internet, so my comments may be a bit vague since my while-watching translation is not up to par).

All the women in this show are insane in some way, I'm convinced. Even Himari.

Also, transformation of hospital was a graphic designer's dream.
Kanba is apparently back as an active character and being kissed. Maybe Shoma will stop getting all the bad luck-oh wait, he probably won't. :< Poor Shoma, no one loves you. <3

And, just how many penguins hats are there? D:

Okay, so you know how penguins seem to be running everything, at least in the corporate world? Well, there may be something to that. However:

It's not the same corporation. Time to go watch the OP again, I guess.

As I watch:
I just noticed that 2 got hit with Shoma.

Shoma's OK! And I have to laugh at 2 getting taken care of in the hospital bed by 3. It seems like 2 may have padded Shoma from getting hurt as bad? It seems hurt worse than he is, broken wing, head bandage etc.

The other penguin is CREEPY.

Return of the symbol people in a big way.

Number 1 is a lady crazy creeper, and obsessed with underwear.

2 Just ate a thermometer o.O. Annnd now it's coughing um mercury... crazy penguin.

Uh oh... it's HER. Her Penguin is Esmerelda. Cool.

This show has awesome graphics.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ENf4VEhI40 New World Symphony Oboe Largo... never quite been so creepy as this distortion. And why is it so important? Thats a very specific piece to choose.

Red thread. He's tied to the penguin so that's meaningful.

LOLWAT? Kanba and the Assassin?

The ED for this episode is the remix by WATCHMAN featuring vocals by Yui Horie (track 7 on the DEAR FUTURE single). Yui Horie plays gun lady, by the way.

So yaaaaay Shoma is alive (with only a few cuts and bruises! Golly, it's a miracle and not a stretch at all). Elsewhere, we have 1 fishing for underwear, Ringo changing somewhat, a pretty messed-up love triangle, and another penguin hat.

Is the diary actually telling the future for whoever holds it, or is it just a bunch of things Momoka wrote that Ringo managed to make happen again?

You'll notice that everything written in the Penguindrum happens to Shoma despite the efforts of Ringo to have them happen between her and the teacher, so I'd say it's a safe bet that the Penguindrum has some sort of power, though I'm also of the idea that Momoka is the god of Himari's hat.
