Anybody have any manga recommendations?

Postby Heart of Sword » Sat May 15, 2004 2:45 pm

I already read Dragon Ball (just a few volumes) and Rurouni Kenshin (first four volumes as five's not out yet, I don't think).

Anybody have any recommendations for manga that fits these standards:

- some humor (preferably slapstick)
- no sex/nudity/adult situations
- no heavy language (f* words/s* words)
- occult kept to a minimum (magic, sorcery, etc.)

Violence is usually okay with me in manga as long as there's no human sacrifices, torturing or *shudder* live burnings. *shudder* Those things just freak me out.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Oh, well, it's not really humorous nor does it directly fit into the category of Dragon Ball or RK. I would suggest Juvenile Orion. I really liked it. It's sorta like DNAngel. I don't think there occult presented, but there is some mention of the zodiac. I don't totally understand the connection though. It's a little confusing, but the art is dazzling and no sex. There's not any adult situations thus far, though some people have thought there were some very light homosexual undertones. I didn't notice, but be ye warned.

If you really want humor, then read Fruits Basket. That's really funny, and oh so loveable. You simple must read it.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. If you like the marial arts sort of thing, Naruto is really good (Ok, I haven't read that much of it but based on the number of Naruto threads around). There is some minor language, but only sex/nudity thing would be Naruto's sexy no justu, but that doesn't happen more than once or twice, right? And he's conveniently obscured by swirly smoke. Of course, the manga does involve ninja-magic-type stuff... lots of funny slapstick, though.

But if you want slapstick and funny, nothing, absolutely nothing, beats Azumanga Daioh. (Who knew this was coming? Who coulda guessed? XD) No occult, only minor language (d- and h- word), and no sexual stuff besides some crude jokes. Yes, I would definitely go for Azumanga Daioh.

Dangit, Kireihana, you beat me to it...:P

Hmm...try maybe Kare Kano...it's a romantic shoujo comedy with simple art and it's rated T by Tokyopop...

Since ya have restrictions, the titles you want to stay away from are Love Hina or Chobits. They've both got good stories, but contain a whole lot of sex, nudity, language...the list goes on and on lol.

Di Gi Charat. Cute, funny, simply hilarius (shoujo). As far as I know, there's nothing objectionable.

Cyborg 009 has plenty of action. THe only bad thing about this is it does have some s+++ words. But not a ton.
Dragonball Z is great for action. it has some minor language.
one Piece. Very little minor language and slapstick violence.
Planetes. it has more s+++ words than any of the other ones but besides that its great! (o yah there is also some very undetailed male nudity.

Is there any nudity in Fruits Basket? Somewhere I heard that there was but that might have been something else.

Hmmm. . . I've read to volume 2. I haven't seen any butts. We do see a little cleveage. Only a little, but it's there. Other than that--- there's this very convenient cloud which always descends when any character transforms. That or someone is conveniently standing infront of them or the frame is really small so you only see shoulder and heads and such. I haven't seen anything indecent yet. But, let's let the other fruit basket people add their opinion.

I was on amazon.com scouting for manga, and found a few: they said that Inuyasha was good for ages 9-12 but I'm not sure about that, I heard that there was nudity in the manga...

I checked out the first volume at my local library (it was the old, flipped version) and yes, there is nudity. The first instance was one of the demons, who had a centipede-like rear and a bare female chest. The only other time I can recall is when Kagome is taking a bath in a hot spring, and you see her upper-half naked. I certainly wouldn't suggest it for 9-year-olds...

Thought so. Anyway I don't think amazon has a good rating system...they rated a few manga "9-12" when I knew that it should not be that way. I'm going to borders tonight and will check out Fruits Basket. Thanks for all the recommendations! (and if anyone has any more please tell me)

I heard Slayers was quite fanservice-y. Hmmm. . . maybe I'm wrong. But, yeah, I think you'll really like fruit basket. After that, I'd agree with Angel about Junevile Orion (J.O) It's awesome.

I certainly thought so. But just so you know, there aren't anywhere near as many transformations in volume two. I don't even remember one tranformation where we actually see them turn back.

Naruto is amazing! Tons of action, slapstick, and great art!! But yah, there's some nudity in Vol.1 (only about a couple times) and it's coveredm by smoke. So no worrys. But once you get to Vol.3, it can be pretty bloody.

I also HIGHLY recommend Jing: King Of bandits
It has A BUNCH of slapstick too!!! VERY HILARIOUS!! And the art and character designs are abosolutely stupendious! The first 2 volumes are the best of the whole series, so go get them now!!

Hmm but did the smoke show anything through it?

Naruto's only T but what's JKOB rated? (the only T+ I do is Rurouni Kenshin but it shouldn't have that high a rating--T-rated manga are usually clean as far as nudity goes)

No, it doesn't show anything through the smoke. It covers all of the naughty parts. JKOB is rated T as well. JKOB is actually cleaner than even Naruto to tell you the truth.

Tommy used to work on the docks
Union's been on strike
Bright eyes burning like fire
And exposing every weakness
However carefully hidden by the kids

Who will love a little Sparrow
Who's traveled far and cries for rest
Spare him his life from this monstrosity

I've seen a million faces and I've rocked them all
And if the band youre in starts playing different tunes
We will we will rock you
We will we will rock you!

DNAngel. . . hold on, let me past my previous response to this. .

Okay here it is. Remember this is only for volume 1. Volume 2 comes out tommorrow.
mangafantic wrote: As far as content goes (in DNAngel), let's see. Um, there was some language. I don't remember any major violence. The only thing that sticks out in my mind is one point when the girl's locker room is under construction, so the kid's class room is turned into a makeshift girl's changing room. He, unfortuneately didn't know this and he walks in on them changing. We see nothing more than a few bras, but still-- it's ain't squeaky. There's maybe half a page of girl's grasping their t-shirts to themselves and staring at him.

Also, I don't know exactly how they explain Dark. Is he inhabiting the main character. I don't think he's portrayed as demonic. It didn't strike me that way, but let others who are more strudious in their DNAngel fandom set me straight.

In addition to that, there is one character who is training to be able to summon these spirit things. Right now it seems really innocent, and I don't totally understand it so I won't ramble.

Does that answer the question? If not-- no ahead and ask me anything else.

For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

*looks at personal collection* *winces* Umm. . . I only own T+ mangas.. . Except for Magic knight Rayearth which is an exceptional series.

Oh wait! I have Juvenille Orion. I would reccommend that one too. The worst thing it has is a dude who sprouts wings to defend a girl through combat. Yes, some blood, but if you have read Kenshin, it is nothing.

AH!!! Another one: Tsubasa by Del Rey Manga. It is another awesome Clamp one. Mixes a lot of their characters. Can't describe it, it's just too awesome. Magic in the sense of interdimensional travel, but nothing deep.

Others I can think of are
Cardcaptor Sakura is enchanting, but it has magic and such.
Fruits basket is really good.
DNAngel is supposedly good too. I haven't read it though I've been told that "for the love of daisuke read the manga." In other words the manga is good but the anime not so? I guess thats what was meant.
Wedding peach is really good too. It is the first maho shoujo I have read in which the relationships progress at an alarmingly satisfying rate.
Angelic layer but I can't confirm that as I haven't read it.
I know I can think of more. . . .
We forget that . . . . . . . . . . .Our souls are the real blades of the fight. ~ RBHS

'cause guys like this one here show up. . . I keep coming back!!! ~Shizuma Kusanagi
Knight of the CAA

If I am not posting, sorry. . . I am too much of an activity junkie, currently probably hanging out with/teaching japanese exchange students.
