Friend in a broken marriage.

Postby Spector » Tue Jun 07, 2011 12:52 am

My friend has been struggling to maintain her marriage with her husband. She has major trust issues with him, and a while ago they got into a big fight and ended in him hitting her.
Shes at her mom's right now, and wants to eventually go back. This stuff isn't news, in her relationship. I know God can still save it, but I don't want to see her keep getting hurt.

Praying that they can find the will to go into therapy before getting together. No one should ever be in a relationship where they're either hitting or being hit by their partner.

Unfortunately, when a relationship has reached that point, usually the only thing you can do is leave. It will only get worse if she goes back - no one should return to an abusive situation like that. Of course I don't know all the details, but I cringe a bit when you say she wants to get back together with him as that is very common behavior for people in abusive situations to keep returning to the situation. Sadly, many Christians feel they have a duty to "fix" the spouse when that is just not Biblical nor does God want us to feel guilty about leaving a bad relationship. It isn't just the hitting that worries me - it's obvious the whole relationship is likely dysfunctional and that isn't a Christian marriage on the husband's part. I can't say I'll really be praying they get back together, but I will pray for God's hand in the situation and on those involved.

I'll definately be praying, but I'm with USSR with this one; when it comes to the point of lifting a fist, that means it is probably time for leaving. I don't know if this is the first time or one of several, but if they don't see a marriage counselor or keep time to themselves after a while in different places, the relationship could be headed in a more catastrophic direction.
