Best sequels

Believe it or not, some sequels actually do live up to the original. Some are even better. Which ones do you think were great? Here's my list:
1. Back to the Future 2 and 3 (yes, even with the wild west motif)
2. The Dark Knight
3. Batman Returns
4. Iron Man 2
5. Star Trek 2-6 (5 was...tolerable, but not awful)
6. Star Trek: First Contact
7. Terminator 2: Judgement Day (it's actually better than the original, IMHO)
8. Gremlins 2 (oh man, this one is so funny!)
9. any Indiana Jones movie after Raiders. (yes, even Crystal Skull)
10. any Star Wars sequel or prequel (don't flame me. I'm free to have my own opinion, and I think the prequels were good. IT'S A FREE COUNTRY AND I'M ENTITLED TO MY OPINION!)
11. Lion King 2
12. most James Bond movies (excluding On His Majesty's Secret Service and Moonraker
13. Ghostbusters 2 (admit it, the Statue of Liberty being controlled by an NES Advantage was just plain funny)
14. Superman 2 (Kneel before Zod!)

As a general rule, any sequel that adds to a continuing (and existing) story is usually pretty great in my book. So this automatically includes movies like the following:

The Two Towers
The Return of the King
The Empire Strikes Back
The Return of the Jedi (personal favorite; I think Ewoks are adorable. Don't judge me. XD)
Harry Potter and the Every Movie Except Maybe the Fifth One; Not That It Was Bad, It Just Left Out All Of The Best Parts.
The Dark Knight
The Bourne sequels
Toy Story 2+3


As for sequels that were made not necessarily as a continuing saga:

Army of Darkness (I understand this is seen as something of a sequel to Evil Dead 2, so I assume it counts XD)

Also I remember enjoying X-Men 2, though I cannot remember a thing about it at the moment. XD It's been a while, apparently.

Actually, according to the official Indy timeline, it goes Temple of Doom, Raiders, Last Crusades... I have no idea why since you'd never get that from the movie but yes... Officially, Temple of Doom is a prequel.

I like Alien and Aliens equally but dang if Aliens isn't one of the best sequels ever made by a totally different director several years after the original film.

Also, The Empire Strikes Back. I love the first Star Wars film but Empire really took it to the next level. It's probably the best second installment of a film trilogy ever. Well, this one and The Two Towers are both good second installments.

Toy Story 3. I liked it better than the first two. The first one is great, the second was decent, but the third one just...wow.

I pretty much agree with most of these, and will only add:

The Rescuers Down Under. I LOVED this movie when I was a kid, and I went back and rewatched it this year. It's better than The Rescuers, and the animation is flat-out gorgeous; some of the best Disney has ever turned out.

I forgot about this movie, but I love this one, almost more than the original Rescuers. XD It very well may be the only truly good, unplanned sequel Disney ever made. XD And it was one of the first animated films to include computer animation (with help from Pixar, no less)! I love it so much though. XD

I have no love for Supremacy. I am incapable of judging it one way or the other, though, since as far as I am concerned, shaky-cam is the devil's work.

RLM has some issues, but does a great job on TPM review overall, I think. He makes his points humorous in nature and really reminded me as to what made the original trilogy so much fun.

And since it's been getting some hate, I LIKED Temple of Doom, even though its not nearly as good as Raiders or The Last Crusade. Perhaps this has something to do with the nickname of "Short Round" I was given in middle school, though...

As for Harry Potter, I thought they were all very good, except perhaps the second one, which is the only one I've never felt the need to rewatch. I haven't watched the newest yet.

Discounting the Star Wars and LoTR franchises, Aliens might be my favorite sequel ever. Ironically enough, I think Alien: Resurrection may be my least favorite.

Oh, and though I've only seen bits and pieces of it, someone has to mention The Godfather Part II - widely considered the best sequel ever, and some think it better than the original.

You guys rock. My count of how many people agree with me and my family is now up to THREE!!! XD I love Episode I]anyone[/i] could think the Darth Maul Duel of the Fates battle at the end is not cool.

The Chronicles of Riddick (which I mistakenly watched first, thinking it was the first movie; I actually kind of prefer it to Pitch Black)

I'll say Rec 2. Watched it the other night, and enjoyed it quite a lot. Better than I was expecting anyway.

The other ones are great too (well, except for Episode II maybe), but there's something I really like about Episode I that the others don't have. And I don't see how anyone could think the Darth Maul Duel of the Fates battle at the end is not cool.

Episode II = disappointing...mostly cause of the horrid dialogue

I think I didn't like Duel of the Fates beause if Darth Maul hadn't pussyfooted around and just killed Obi-Wan, he would have won. It's one of the most avoidable deaths ever, and falls into the same kind of bad cliched death where the bad guy is struck down while monologuing.

I also kind of have a problem with Duel of the Fates because even though it looks cool and all, Darth Maul really is a meh villain. Someone once argued that Vader was the same way, he was originally all about presence and not depth, but Vader was actually in the plot. We rooted against him as he continued to fight our heroes and strike down good people.

See, in The Empire Strikes Back, our brave knight descends into Hell to fight his Demon who has killed his mentor, family, and two of his closest friends. Despite his valiant efforts, he loses, his innocence lost with that slash that removed his right hand.

In The Phantom Menace, some random dude with facepaint and a black cloak shows up and kills a dude before being killed to keep continuity.
