Funimation wrote:Flower Mound, Texas (January 12, 2010) –]www.funimation.com/video starting Thursday, January 13 at 10:45 a.m. CST just one hour after its Japanese broadcast premiere. Then each week a new episode will be added to the site in addition to third-party streaming partners.

“Fractale” is an 11-episode original series produced by A-1 Pictures and Ordet and directed by Yutaka Yamamoto (“Kannagi,“ “Haruhi Suzumiya”).

The story was developed by Hiroki Azuma with the screenplay written by Mari Okada (“Toradora!”) and original character design by Hidari.

Fractale is set on an island at the far reaches of a continent where its fractale system is on the brink of collapse. A young boy rescues a shrine maiden from falling off a cliff and falls in love with her but he is left only with her pendant when she disappears the next day. With the help of the maiden’s avatar that he finds withiin her pendant, he will search the island for the lost maiden and the answers to why their world is falling apart.

YAY! xD Fractale is probably what I've been looking forward to the most, with Yumekui Merry in second place.

...AAAAND a massive sigh of relief. Was worried for a bit, especially w/ CR nabbing Wondering Son. I wasn't 100% certain Funi still had a deal w/ noitaminA.

That's the thing, I don't think they have a deal with noitaminA anymore. That is, I don't think that we can automatically assume that any noitaminA shows will get streamed in the coming year. I mean, I guess they could theoretically have a deal that says that they get all the 24:45 noitaminA shows, but that seems kinda dumb. And I'm pretty sure that, as interesting of a character Yamakan is, Fractale doesn't have as much traction as Hourou Musuko does, especially with the manga readership. If Funimation were smart (a charitable assumption, I know), they definitely should/would have gone with Hourou Musuko over Fractale.

Crunchyroll seems to have licensed Wandering Son directly from Aniplex itself, whereas Funimation's deal was actually with Fuji TV. So it's possible it wasn't actually included in the noitaminA deal anyway.

If Funimation were smart (a charitable assumption, I know), they definitely should/would have gone with Hourou Musuko over Fractale.

Not sure I agree with this. I haven't read it but Hourou Musuko looks like the kind of show Nozomi or Sentai would release in a subbed boxset somewhere down the line, not really the type of show Funi releases complete with a dub. Even as an original unknown quantity, it seems to me that Fractale fits in with Funimation's titles better.

So I watched the only first episode I could access so far, which happened to be Rio.
It actually wasn't as bad as I was expecting it to be, which could be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on the rest of this season.

Well the people who are making it are already going online saying "This wasn't my decision! I had nothing to do with this!"

So I think we should just watch the flames from a safe distance.

Yeah, the story board writer basically said, "I told them it sucked, gave them a new story board and they didn't use it. Not my fault!"

In other poor decision news, Funimation streams Fractale in 360p only.

Seriously, Funimation?

Well, Funimation streams everything it has in 360p.

Just finished Madoka 2 raw, starting on Fractale now. I hope they are as creative with everyone else's combat as they have been with Mami. Magical muskets are AWESOME.

Fractale live notes:
is that an MD I see there
IPOD WITH AN SD CARD SLOT LOLOLOL
so this is basically OZ from Summer Wars superimposed on top of the real world
AIRSHIPS
oh hey, actual fractals in the OP
everyone is a neet
a girl made out of the internet, of course
Production is pretty standard A-1 stuff. Based on the premise and what I know of Azuma's writings, I kind of have a feeling for where this is going to go.

I adore the aesthetic of Fractale. The costumes, the backgrounds, the doppels, the music. So, so good. The story is also intriguing so far. Solid first episode.

Is it bad that I can honestly say 'I've seen worse'. I thought the first episode was... other than being a festival of fanservice... a passable introduction to the premise, the casino, the aesthetic and the characters. I think it'll take the second episode to tell whether it'll be just mundane or actually bad.

I didn't like the first episode of Fractale. It reminded me too much of Nausicaa--why I'm not sure--which I really, really, really didn't like. I'll stick with it for a few more weeks probably, and since it's short probably finish it, but so far I don't like it. Sad though, since I was really looking forward to it.

I think it's those very same "Nausiacaa-esque" visual and aural qualities which I find quite charming.

Try not to project the bad things about Nausicaa (i.e. force-fed environmentalist message) onto Fractale, as it seems like it will be playing in a different sandbox.

Was there anything about the story and/or premise that turned you off?

The setting and story feels like something that should be a bit more serious, and any comedy to be less...slapstick. I came out of it with a "um. okay." feeling that I believe was largely brought upon by the humor. The premise is cool, and the story I'm not sure about, it fell a little flat to me, but I'm willing to give it a chance. Although I am not a fan of the character-design, it is beautiful, and I am looking forward to learning more about the dopples. :)

EDIT: Ooh! It's on Hulu now, I might re-watch it where it works better and then look at it from a different angle now that I know what to expect.

I really liked the aesthetic of Fractale as well. The feel was very much like something Miyazaki might do. So it will be interesting to see where it goes from here.

The Team Rocket/Grandis Gang-like guys were sort of amusing.

Fractale:
Very interesting. I've haven't read much farther in the manga than this episode, but I believe the anime to be better than the manga so far. I see some influence from Miyazaki's works, but not especially Nausicaa in particular...really, would everybody be saying Nausicaa if the girl didn't have a flying machine and blue dress? That's about all the resemblance I see.

Anyway, I expect I'll be following this.

Oh, but there was one moment that made me full of mad. If you ever have a scene where a character is singing something, DON'T play background music at the same time unless that music is accompanying the singing. That's a really bad production mistake that ought to be avoidable by anyone with a brain.

Hourou Musuko:
Beautiful art style, and likeable characters, but it seems like it'll be too slow and saccharinetastic for me. Also I couldn't figure out everybody's relationships and past story, which they were indicating I should know, but maybe that's because I didn't have the attention span to listen to what people were saying and piece everything together. I think I'll continue reading the manga instead, where I can go at the pace I want to.

Also I think the part of my brain that listens to sentimental piano music is now burned out.

So, I watched it again, and still don't like the (I guess I'll also broaden the familiarity from just Nausicaa) Miyazaki-ness of it. But I did like it a little better second time around, and the more I hear positive commentary on it I'll probably like it more and more. xD As long as Clain gets more interesting I think it will be more enjoyable.

Hourou Musuko is excellent. However, they chose to start in the middle of the series and they probably have a number of reasons for it. I don't know how well it'll work for people who haven't read it before and having only just started the middle school arc, I feel like there was a lot of excellent material they could have covered from the elementary school arc.

Madoka is still awesome. It's definitely not the happy magical girl life that we usually get and I think the surreal scenes are a good reminder that it was Urobuchi Gen who wrote this thing.

Someone subbed it faster than I thought they would, Great!

Anyway:

It's too soon to make judgements, but I like the theme of human contact, and how important it is.

Fractale has interested me enough to keep watching even with the Miyazaki+Team Rocket+awkwardness around girls+Tada-chan made from internets at the end. Somehow, it all works.

Madoka is officially awesome in my book, even though Kyube still makes me laugh every time he talks.

Well to be fair, even as a grown man I would also find it incredibly awkward if a girl I just met just walks into my room looking like that, even if she really did need help getting ointment on a scrape on her back.

I mean, at least keep the shirt on and just lift the back.

In the manga she's wearing more than just her hair over her front, she has some sort of backless undergarment. I don't know why they felt they needed to change that.

The anime is the original work and the manga is the adaptation.

(Yes, I know the manga was published first, but that's a consequence of the differences between anime and manga production)

Also, begin wild Madoka speculation and analysis.

That's pretty much exactly how I felt. I couldn't help but think, "What's Nausicaa doing in this?" as I watched. :P

Infinite Stratos: ep. 02:

Well, this series might be the biggest cliche in cliche-ville since ever, but MAN that fight was well animated.

Still not exciting somehow, but nicely done.

I honestly don't know whether I hate this or love it.

K, Gosick actually has my attention more than Fratale currently, but only by a slight bit, probably due to the more blatant mystery structure of the show and darker tone. Waiting for the rest of the season to unlock still.

I'm with Mech on this one... I was really hoping that Fractale would grab my attention, but... I kinda felt like it dragged.

The scenery was gorgeous though.. *o* which is something that GoSick didn't really have. But GoSick has the interesting mystery aspects.

So far, surprisingly, Level E is winning out, but I want to see a few others too. :)
