Question about Full Metal Alchemist

Postby Kat Warrior » Sun May 09, 2004 7:59 am

There's already a question thread here concerning this, so I figured that perhaps this fits here, too?

Anyway, I really wanted to look into Full Metal Alchemist because the character Edward is so cute and because it looked quite interesting. I DLed the first chapter of the manga from the website, read it, and then had my mom read it to see if she wouldn't mind my continuing to read it. Her complaint was that Ed stated quite clearly that he's an aetheist. I don't think that's a good reason for me not to read it, personally. But what I'm asking is does Ed's veiw ever change? Because to me, since he stated that in the very first chapter it means that's a trait about him that is quite subject to change due to character development.

It'd be really helpful if someone could give me a review of this like the ones that are in the review section.

I've read about four volumes of the manga.

Ed's athiestic viewpoint isn't ever mentioned again outside that particular chapter in the rest of the four volumes that I read, if I remember right.

So far at least, it doesn't really seem to have much effect on the storyline.

There are atheists in the world though.

If it's not having a large effect on the story, I would say it might be okay as long as it's not hurting your faith.

Well that's cool. So how about other things like Religious content and language? I know I'm asking a lot of questions, but I want to make sure that it's something my parents wouldn't have many complaints about.

If you are reading the Full Metal Alchemist manga scans off of the internet, I will warn you that there are a few instances of strong language in a couple of chapters. Being that these are fan translators, they do oftentimes spice up the dialogue with profanity much moreso than the official translations(when the manga eventually gets licensed) will.

As for religious content, there really isn't much so far except that one corrupt religion that's in the first few chapters and this one other religion/belief system of a particular race of people that hasn't really had much to do with the plot in what I read save some remarks by one character/follower and which is hard to explain without going into spoilers. Alchemy itself is treated as a science more than anything particularly magical.

There is blood, violence, and character deaths which is to be expected. The series does get a bit dark at times...

Besides what I mentioned, there isn't really any other content that I can think of.

The manga at http://www.fullmetalalchemist.com is fan-translated? Woah... never wloulda guessed. It's good to hear that the official release is coming up (quite hopefully with much less language). I know there's an anime series that goes with it, but I've yet to find any DVDs of it. Blood and violence are expected (and not a problem), but it sounds so far like there's no sexual content or nudity for me to worry about. Language and wrong religious content are the main issues in my household.

you'll only find bootlegs or original Japanese DVDs for FMA right now^^ you could download it via BT if you want also^^ and IMO, the anime is ALOT better then the manga^^

You know, I sorta have a bone to pick here. It bothers me when parents or people in general, for that matter, pick a quarrel with a character just because he or she is, using this example, an aethist.
This is a character. The author is trying to tell a story. Since people have told us his religion opinions are never brought up again, we know that he author's not trying to just solicite his beliefs. If I thought he were trying to brainwash you-- that would be one thing. IMHO, the author's just saying "Hey, my character is the kind who doesn't believe in God." This trait has been use by me in books to protray a character who feel totally self-dependent. It wasn't as if I was turning heretic. I was just telling a story (Although, it is true that my aetheist characters generally come to grips with how little they can do for themselves.)

I would ask your mom about this, but in the end--- you should submit with respect.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

Yeah, that's my plan. I'll bring it up again, but if she doesn't change her mind I'll just give up and avoid being annoying. Heh, if it isn't even really translated and available yet I don't know what I'm in such a hurry for...

EDIT: Well, the final verdict was "no". No FMA for me. There's gotta be an action anime out there somewhere that my parents won't mind...

For me its licencing by Funimation and Cartoon Network could be good. If it's editted to that rating (that most loathe) called "Y7; FV" then I'm more likely to be allowed to watch it. But... they're trying to raise the dead? That might not go over well with my parents...

I was a little hesitant to continue after reading chapter one. But I'm glad I did because its now my favorite manga.

All of the Funi dubs I've ever seen are over-edited and corny (sorry, I know that sounds very cold), but hopefully it will do some good to you. ^_^;

Lt. Hughes has got to be the best character developement I have ever seen. Throughout the chapters he appears in, he is a goofball and adds little to the plot. Then the telephone booth... it is a "Woah" moment. A smack in the face sorta event that expressly hits you where you moarn his lost and want to kill Envy. I will always remember that scene, and apply it to my writing.

Good news.

With the dub coming out on Cartoon Network, and after I explained things to Mom, she said I can go ahead and try Full Metal Alchemist out when it hits the air! Great, huh? I can't wait...

I've never read or heard of the anime or the manga of Full Metal Alchemist. I take that from the fan base (and a synopsis I found online) that it's pretty good; where can I buy the manga? I can't locate it on Amazon.com. Does anyone have an ISBN number or something?

Thank you.

That's the thing.
The manga hasn't been liscensed in the US yet although I imagine it will be liscensed fairly soon. I believe all of us have read it via fan-translated manga scans.

Erm...is that legal? Probably not.

But it would be good to see if it's worth buying before spending money on it. So I'll have to check it out. Thank you.

Ooooh. Aaaah. Yikes. Woohah. Mwhahahaaha! Heeheehee. Woosh! Egads!

Brilliant! I just finished reading the FMA manga volume 4. It's very dark and the odd (sort of negative) view towards religions (and its occultic take on alchemy) sort of put me off at first, but the plot and character developement is some of the best I've seen in cinema, literature or graphic novels.

The 'secret' to what made the Philosopher stone was an astounding piece of plot developement. It's the kind of thing I like to put in my (extremely bad) attempts of literature; things that test a person's morals vs desires to the extreme. When's volume 5 coming out?
