cheap sound card

do any of you guys know of a good cheap sound card? i dont need anything really fancy

I'd go with the Sound Blaster 16 PCI card. That's the cheapest one I know of. ^_^

Seconded. It's inexpensive and the sound quality is reasonable for the price.

SB16 is DEFINATELY good, especially if you're into DOS gaming. I need to find another one.

Or if you desperately need 3D sound of sort, get Hercules Muse XL. You should be able to find it at a relatively cheap price, of around USD$30. Certainly worth it for a surround sound-system card.

if i were you, id get this, $23 dollars is relativly cheap
and its a soundblaster live 5.1

That's a very good point, too. I use an SB16 ISA (not PCI -- it really is that old) in my 486DX4/133 I use for DOS games. Despite the age of the system, though, the card was bought just eight months ago -- Creative still makes and sells ISA cards.

You think that's old? I use an SB16 ISA in my 486DX/33 for my DOS & older Windows games. (I guess that isn't much older.)

I'm not surprised; Creative still has drivers and such on their site for download for even their oldest SB products. (Somehow I found that the driver update I downloaded for my SB16 ISA card didn't work as well as the original driver that was included with the card, though.)

SB 16 is very old isn't it(I had one in 1995)?? You get a SB Live for very little money nowdays. I've seen some down in about 30$

to an older computer you can buy a SB16 with ISA slot, but I recommend a plug and play compatible SB Live! to a newer(I say pentium 3+) computer.

Right, but the point is that SB16 would have much better compatibility with old DOS games if you chose to play them.

Otherwise, for strict Windows use, SB Live! (or Hercules -- Lorentz makes a good point, those are good as well) should do fine.
