Taylor Kitsch to star in 'Battleship' film

Battleship movie

THR wrote:Taylor Kitsch, who is starring in "John Carter of Mars," is moving to another sci-fi tentpole, coming on board to star in "Battleship," Universal's adaptation of the Hasbro board game.

Pete Berg is directing the action adventure movie, whose story has drawn heat from some quarters for adding an "alien invasion" element to what has been traditionally seen as a grounded Naval game.

The script, by Jon and Erich Hoeber, sees an international fleet come together to battle a water-bound armada of otherworldly origin.

Throughout the awards season, Jeremy Renner, riding high off of "The Hurt Locker" momentum, had been in the running for the role but had to decide between this movie and Paul Thomas Anderson's latest drama, with scheduling conflicts preventing his involvement in both.

For WME-repped Kitsch, the role continues his rising status. The actor has gone from playing blink-and-you-missed-it parts in "Snakes on a Plane" to being a key actor in TV's "Friday Night Lights" to playing superhero Gambit in "Wolverine." He is currently shooting "Mars," where he plays the title character of the Edgar Rice Burroughs book series.

In "Battleship," Kitsch is playing a Naval commander named Alex Hopper, described as "wildly spirited" and "a great seaman but a lousy politician."

Other key roles in the film include the female lead as well as a Japanese commander.

Berg is producing with is Film 44 partner Sarah Aubrey, Hasbro's Brian Goldner and Bennet Schneir, and Scott Stuber.

I died a little inside.

Still, after reading that there's a film based on Asteroids (yes, the arcade game) in the works, and that there were four studios bidding on rights to it, I guess I shouldn't be surprised as to what Hollywood is trying to make a movie out of nowadays.

so when the Tetris movie coming out, or maybe Dig Duck? Okay so I am starting to see that creativity in America is dead, but SERIOUSLY this is just sad. When will people start making stuff that they wrote themselves.

So...are you seriously saying that the Hasbro board game "Battleship" has a storyline or something? Because last I checked, it was just a game where you call out grid locales and see if you hit your opponent. So, um, if one was to make a movie based on that, it would kind of require WRITING A STORY. Which would mean that the people making this movie ARE making stuff that they wrote themselves.

So...I don't see your complaint?

Hey, the made a pretty good movie out of Clue.
But then, Clue actually has a story...sort of. (trust me, rent the movie sometime. Tim Curry is great in it. Oh, and stick around for the alternate endings too)

Plus Clue was a comedy. That was the only reason that it was a good movie. Had they made it serious it would have been a random mystery movie that no one would have I cared about.

What the heck is Clue? Is that like Cluedo?

Also, a movie of Battleships? Hilarious. I know they're also making a movie of Monopoly. Weird.

Monopoly as a movie? That is all kinds of wrong. It would take too long. Every time I played Monopoly, it took HOURS to bankrupt people. Even if you bought all the railroads (which I often tried to do)

That's why the Monopoly movie will be base in Detroit and be about Detroit and the Banking system!
