One can only hope...

Whatever happened to that 3D Godzilla attraction that the guy from Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster was going to do? Did that ever happen?

The Kaiju community has kept a pretty close eye on this for a while and many speculate it'll be horrible (like the 98 remake) or it could be good, it's impossible to say at this point. Personally, I hope it's good but I totally suspect another America!fail as well.

Nope. Never happened. I'm personally a bit glad too. It would *technically* be another Shinsei film which means they'd more than likely go about establishing ANOTHER background into ANOTHER version of Godzilla and we've all had enough of that.

Hey is that a dead horse? I think someone is beating it! XD
Seriously, how many Godzilla movies is this? I heard the last Godzilla movie didn't do well, but I am probably wrong XD

I hope with better technology it will work out!

There's 28 films in all. 16 in Showa, 7 in Heisei, and 6 in Shinsei.

The last movie was Final Wars and a lot of people have differing opinions on it. Though even as a Godzilla fan I thought it blowed.

I honestly hope they stay WITH the suits instead of going off into 3D CGI stuff. How would Godzilla be Godzilla without the suits? :\They're amazing and take a lot of hard work to make too. Not to mention the actors inside the suits are carrying around like 100 pounds or so of rubber yet they still manage to pull off an awesome monster performance.

Ohhhhhh no! They say he's got to go go go Godzilla!
Making it closer to the original doesn't make it the original. Godzilla needs to be left alone to the Japanese, that's how I feel. America tried to do Godzilla before.....not cool. And I agree with Crimson. If you take away the suits and the models, you're taking away part of what makes a Godzilla film a Godzilla film. Say no to CGI Godzilla.

Godzilla without a man in a rubber suit is like a sandwich without any bread. It just doesn't work.

Excited for this. I'm hoping for the return of either Don Frye or Robert Scott Field.

Hey, I liked Final War... I won't pretend it was genuinely good filmmaking or anything, but I enjoyed it.

The thing that worries me about another American Godzilla is, generally speaking, American filmmakers don't seem to have knack for doing silly ideas (like, say, a giant radioactive lizard) straight-faced like their Japanese counterparts. Instead, they'll either try to make that silly idea look serious, rendering it unrecognizable in the process, or bury it in thick layers of irony until it just gets pointless. In fact, the last Godzilla remake tried both!

Exactly

The thing is, I think it really would be cool to see a modern film revisit the old-school, rubber suit genre, Grindhouse style. Unfortunately, Grindhouse didn't make any money, so I can't imagine any other studios being willing to do something equally retro... least of all the guys behind Clash of the Titans.

Hmm, this actually seems remotely interesting. I do hope it'll be good, cause a neat monster movie would be pretty epic... besides Cloverfield... I'd rather think of Godzilla when it comes to movies instead of the "Cloverfield Monster" ...O_O I had a bad experience watching that one. >_< Anyhow, yeah, kinda looking forward to this one.

Cloverfield was an excellent example of how viral marketing can make a mediocre film into a box-office sensation.

I think the most telling sign of Cloverfield's absolute failure is that Abrams was all going on about how he wanted America to have a monster movie like Godzilla. He then proceeded to do absolutely everything in the movie to ensure that wouldn't happen.

See, the thing is, the Godzilla movies focus on, well, Godzilla. You saw Godzilla a lot in the movies. In fact, Godzilla is the star! On the other hand, we only get a halfway-decent look at the Cloverfield monster like what...twice in the movie? It isn't even IN the movie for most of it, whereas Godzilla is always center focus.

Second, Godzilla has a decent story, we know where he's coming from. Nuclear tests woke him up and he's MAD. Where did the Cloverfield monster come from? Who knows! Why does it want to destroy the city? Beats me!

Oh yeah, and finally, it helps that Godzilla actually has, y'know, a name. Rather than just "giant lizard" or something. Cloverfield monster has no name and therefore is instantly forgettable. Also helping the Cloverfield monster be instantly forgettable is that it was barely shown in the movie, and even when you saw it, it didn't stand out as anything interesting. Godzilla was shown a lot, and had distinct features instead of being an amorphous CG blob.

Also Godzilla was, y'know, EXCITING because a monster was destroying a city and you got to see it blowing nuclear fire breath at tanks and stomping them and knocking down buildings and power lines...instead of some scruffy guy who can't let his ex go.

Anyway that's why Cloverfield sucked and Godzilla is awesome.

It's not just Cloverfield, most western monster movies are afraid to treat their monsters like the star of the show the way Godzilla ended up becoming. Granted, there ARE plenty of kauji films where the monster kind of fades into the background behind the human players; Dogora and Frankenstein Conquers the World come to mind. But then, when was the last time you heard anyone talking about THOSE movies?
