Favorite Disney Princess

Postby rocklobster » Mon Dec 14, 2009 5:18 am

I like the Disney Princesses mostly for their characters. So I was wondering if anyone has a favorite. Mine is a tie between Jasmine and Ariel. I also like Mulan, but I don't consider her a princess. I mean, she doesn't marry royalty nor was she born into it. So why is she included? And for that matter, why is Alice on the list? Not only is she not royalty, she doesn't even have a love interest.

*ahem*

Belle and Ariel are my favorites. ~ <3

I've wondered the same thing about Mulan, also. [/SIZE]

I think pretty much all of them are brainless and shallow except Mulan and Belle. Belle doesn't care about what the Beast looks like on the outside and she doesn't totally ditch her family for "true love" like all of the other princesses. Mulan is awesome because she thinks for herself and uses her own strength to get through her situation.

My favorites would definately be Belle and Mulan. Both risk their lives to save their fathers, and overall are just stronger characters compared to the average "princess."

Since Disney owns Studio Ghibli, I'll say Nausicaa.

Giselle. (both cartoon and human form)

No, really. I love her because she fit the stereotype of the disney princess so well(actually, it was overdone, but who cares?). But then, as time progresses, she changes and becomes stronger herself. And she makes her own happy ending come true.

Anyways, I also like Mulan, cause she super awesome.

If Miyazaki films count, then all of those female character are at least 50 times better than the Disney princesses, XD.

Snow White, singing housekeeper.
Cinderella, singing housekeeper.
Aurora, sleeping housekeeper.
Ariel, disobedient teenager.
Belle, bookish house guest.
Jasmine, curfew breaker.
Pochahontas, actually like 12 years old seriously.
Mulan, gets stuff done son.
Tiana, jazz critic who isn't radioactive.
Alice, lucid daydreamer.

I don't really think there's much of an argument to be had here, though technically Alice and Mulan aren't princesses.

Belle, because she's intellectual and pretty and has a biiiiig heart.

And she likes reading and escaping into fantasy worlds.

Second goes for Mulan, for reasons that Fish noted.

I also don't like the fact that some princess characters are completely omitted. In the book version, Eilonwy from The Black Cauldron is a great character--she's very assertive and will literally fight tooth and nail if any of the villains try to subdue her. Kidagakash Nedakh, from Atlantis, (or Kida) is also a great character. However, I can understand why she and Eilonwy aren't included. Eilonwy is probably still copyrighted to Lloyd Alexander, the writer of The Black Cauldron. As for Kida? Well, Atlantis pretty much bombed due to the critical approach (especially from us religious types for the new-age style culture the Atlantean had). And what about Meg from Hercules? And then there are the animal princesses, like Nala and Maid Marian. Why are they also excluded? Simply because they're animals?

Glad Meg was brought up. She was one of my favorites. As was the chick from Atlantas with all the consonants and the white hair. And Mulan. The rest of them were pretty much the same as listed.

I always felt sorry for Cinderella but not TOO sorry because she did get what she wanted in the end.

My favorite is probably Belle, though, for the same reasons everyone else gave.

Ariel had some potential to be a good character, but since they copped out and took the "happy ending" route, it was not to be. She ended up coming off as stupid and obsesssed rather than selfless and devoted.

However, I will say that trashing Disney heroines for not being well-rounded characters is kind of silly. Most of them are based on old fairy tales, which typically don't involve character development. Also it's not easy to have realistic, deep characters in an 85-minute film. Who the heck watches Disney films looking for high art, anyway? They're total fluff, and that's okay. (If you want deeper stuff, watch anime. XD)

So you'd rather she committed suicide?

Though I guess that would've been hard to do since her sisters would have had to go to Ursula to get the magic knife, and Ursula was too busy being that fake woman to the prince.

Also Ariel's sisters didn't seem to like her much so they probably wouldn't have done that anyway.

She didn't exactly commit suicide in the original.

" wrote:The Sea Witch says if she is able to win the Prince's love, she will gain an eternal soul. The sea witch agrees to make her a potion that will turn her fins into legs, but every step will feel like she is walking on sharp swords and her feet will bleed terribly. Additionally, if the Prince marries another, the morning after his wedding, her heart will break and she will turn into sea foam...

...the Little Mermaid realizes that this is her last night on earth and remembers with sorrow all that she had given up for the Prince. Her sisters then appear and they tell her that they have sold their hair to the Sea Witch in exchange for a magic knife. If she kills the Prince with it, she will become a mermaid again. The Little Mermaid cannot bring herself to do so, and throws herself over the deck, prepared to die. However, because of her self sacrifice, she does not die and instead she becomes a "Daughter of the Air."

See, she was going to die anyway if the Prince married someone else, so instead of killing him with the magic knife and becoming a mermaid again, she accepted the consequences of the choices she had made.

Of course it's going to be Belle, she's from the only animated film to ever be nominated for Best Picture. She's easily the Princess most developed as a character. (Well... maybe Giselle. She has the advantage of being a riff on the classic fairy tale princess, though.)

Eh, I wouldn't exactly call anime high art either. XD

The original Snow White is very well animated, actually. Since then, of course, Disney's effort has gone down.

I like all of them since I have precious childhood memories with them. But my favs are all the disney princesses (or heroines) that are strong willed, can hold their own, learn a valuable lesson, and grow in mind. These include: Mulan, Belle, Jasmine, Giselle, Nala, Meg, Kida, Pocahauntus, Esmarelda....and more whose names I can't remember at this time. There is one exception to this: Ariel. Mostly because of this fanfic I read about a romance between her and Jim Hawkins. XD! I'm a total Jim/Ariel fan because of this fic! It's a deeper love story than the movie. I still like the movie even though it strayed from the book and the romance is a bit shallow. I also LOVE this pic:

I just remembered another Disney Princess that deserves a mention:

Esmeralda. Not only does she have a real personality, but she also is a very capable character.

I like Jasmine the best because she's the prettiest. Yep. I don't think any of the Disney princesses are really all that amazing as characters, so I just go by looks. Oh, and by singing voice. "A whole new world...a dazzling place I never knew...."

It's too bad Snow White's voice is absolutely grating. XDD I can't stand watching that movie, just because of how horrid her voice is. XD On animation, though, Sleeping Beauty is fascinating to watch for Maleficent's facial animation alone. XD It's fantastic.

Anyways, I'm seconding/thirding/etc. lots of people when I say Belle. Beauty and the Beast is my favorite animated Disney movie because it's pretty much the only one that's not about a relationship founded on a hot guy, about 10 minutes of conversation, and a happily ever after. XD

Plus, Belle has housewares for friends. She and the Brave Little Toaster would totally be BFFs. XD
