The original Ninja Turtles comic (what started the whole franchise)

I gotta say, it's a bit different than I would have thought. More violent, and the end of Issue 1... To a fan of the old cartoon, and even the movies, was really surprising.

It does seem to go back to a more normal American Super Hero thing after that, though. The most violent stuff (from what I've read so far) seemed to happen in issue 1, with a brief violent moment in issue 2 involving an animal of all things, with April O'Neil watching and smiling... Thought that was a bit weird, but I guess killing animals wasn't off limit for comics in the '80s like it was in movies. No SPCA watching the comic book industry.

Also, while my memory of the cartoon is a bit fuzzy, I don't remember Baxter stockman being black in the cartoon. I guess they changed it because they didn't want a black villain for fear of fostering racism.

Anyhow, I looked up old posts and found that Ronin was a fan, and I"m sure there are others, but it was my first time getting to read any of it.

Yep, the cartoon was water down to what the comic was that started it all. And yes Baxter stockman was white in the 80's cartoon, where the comic he was black.

The newer revived the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon that started in 2003 and is still going was prouduced by Mirage Studios and it hews more
hews more closely to the original comics as creating a darker and edgier feel than the 1987 cartoon, but still remaining lighthearted enough to be considered appropriate for children.

In it, Baxter Stockman is African American as he was in the comic and not European American like he was in 1987 cartoon.

XDD Dude, that is so intense. I'm surprised by how dark it was! Also, I lol'd at Shredder calling the Turtles "gaijin." That's so funny. XDD

Ah, brings back memories... I still own the first 4 of the graphic novels that contain the first bunch of issues of these "original" Ninja Turtles. I bought them back when the cartoon was popular over here on tv. I too was suprised at all the differences between the 2 mediums, especially the amount of violence in the book (there are plenty of other scenes like that in the later comics as well, but I guess that first 2 pages of them taking on the street gang stands out more because it kinda hits you in the face from the get go). Overall I tend to lean a bit more towards the original version. That's why I liked the new movie, cause it leaned a bit more to the graphic novels than the cartoon.

Hey! I have those too. Cool! :thumb:

The original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movie was really close to that original comic. They just added the kid stuff to it...but it was still on the edge. What other movie shows a kid smoking while playing pool?

Well...except for Robocop 2. Man, was that movie messed up. The late 80s and early 90s where very violent and blood thirsty times...but I am way off topic now.
