Wolfgang Petersen to make live-action Paprika

Postby Roy Mustang » Sun Aug 16, 2009 9:55 pm

Sci Fi wire wrote:Das Boot, The Neverending Story, Air Force One and Troy filmmaker Wolfgang Petersen is reportedly making a live-action version of Millennium Actress and Tokyo Godfathers vet Satoshi Kon's brilliantly surreal anime Paprika, according to Moviehole.

Paprika is the story of therapists using advanced VR technology to enter, record, and manipulate the dreams of their clients. Someone steals the technology, which can be used to project dreams into the minds of waking people, which in turn leads to the possible hacking of the "operating system" of reality itself.

The anime is based on a novel by Yasutaka Tsutsui, which has been adapted into two different manga by Reiji Hagiwara and Eri Sakai.

I'm not even sure why you would want to do this.

If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things."

In the long run, I just can't see this as having any chance of being as good as the anime.
May the Lord bless you and keep you.
May He cause His face to shine upon you.
May He lift up His countenance and grant you peace.

One of the reasons I enjoyed Paprika was because it fully took advantage of the fact that it was animated. There are a lot of scenes in there I just don't think would work in a live action film, no matter how saturated with special effects.

So, help me understand this. A live-action version of Akira has consistently proven too expensive to actually go into production... yet these people somehow think the headtrip that is PAPRIKA will be more manageable?!?!?
