Does this tick anyone else off?

Postby EricTheFred » Mon May 18, 2009 7:59 pm

I have no objection to the idea of making a movie out of "Land of the Lost". Heck, I've always thought it would make a good movie.

I just object to the idea of making a WILL FERRELL COMEDY out of it!

Anyone else feel like they're watching a fond memory being used and abused? I suppose most here are too young to have watched it in the original run, but this used to be something of an underground hit among high school age geeks of the time. It was a children's series with cheap special effects and a really cheesy OP, yet somehow managed to deliver a fairly solid story that developed as the seasons went on.

Why on Earth would they make a comedy out of it? Was it that bad, and we didn't know it?

Ah, well. Just saw the trailer and had to vent. Later.
May the Lord bless you and keep you.
May He cause His face to shine upon you.
May He lift up His countenance and grant you peace.

Anything that Will Ferrell is involved in ticks me off.

I never liked Land of the Lost, but I agree that making a comedy out of it is kind of retarded. Why call it Land of the Lost if it's not going to be anything like the show?

Oh yeah, I remember that show. Didn't watch it much, but I share your sentiments. I'd just like to find the guy who decided Will Ferrell was funny and deck that jerk.
My cousins sat me down to watch Elf last Christmas, swearing up and down that it was like, the funniest movie ever. It was painful. I still want my ninety-seven minutes back.

Elf is actually the only Will Farrell movie that I like and that he does well in...But I do agree...it just seems like every story written for him doesn't bring out the potential comicness, but rather overly unfunny crassness....

Land of the Lost happens to be the only Will Ferrell movie I've ever had any real interest in seeing. I saw Elf and I thought it was retarded. He was horrible in Bewitched. He's just not funny. However I do wanna see this movie. I'm not familiar with the original show (though I did frequently watch the early 90s remake when it was on) but this looks fun.

Sure I'm sure it has stupid Will Ferrel antics but it also has something none of his other movies ever had... Dinosaurs :D I looove dinosaurs and there hasn't been a decent/entertaining dinosaur flick since Jurassic Park (King Kong could have made a pretty cool dino flick but they had to ruin it with that giant monkey). The dinosaurs in this, while looking a little cartoonish, do look pretty cool IMO. Also I like the tone/look of the lost land. It's colorful and doesn't look very real but it still looks neat IMO (the shot with the triple moons I thought was pretty cool).

As far as the humor... well... it didn't look as bad as other will ferrell movies.

It will probably suck though so I'm not getting my hopes up but maybe it will surprise me.

Anyone who says Will Ferrell isn't funny has clearly never seen Anchorman or Talladega Nights.

He's been in a lot of really unfunny terrible movies. Bewitched and Zoolander come to mind immediately. However most of his stuff is fantastic...Anchorman and Stranger Than Fiction being the most obvious examples, and his SNL stuff is legendary. More cowbell, the George W. Bush commercials, Space: The Infinite Frontier, and of course, A Night at the Roxbury (which is more cheesy than actually good but it's amusing enough).

I haven't seen Elf, so maybe that movie does suck. I'll have to watch it one day.

As far as the Land of the Lost thing goes, I won't be seeing it. I like Will Ferrell but this looks like a movie that suffers from his presence rather than benefits. Unless it gets gushing reviews (like I'm talking EVERYONE says it's great), I'm not bothering with it. That was seriously a poor casting decision.

Well I admit I've never seen either of those first two... but he's really not my type of humor. Most comedians are not... unless you count people like Michelle Pfeiffer or Christopher Walken as comedians. I think both are extremely funny or just fun to watch.

Stranger than Fiction is the only Will Ferrel movie I've liked so far. Elf was blah and Anchorman was a little too crass for my tastes.

As for Land of the Lost, I never knew the original so I'm indifferent toward it, however I can sympathize; I've been plenty upset over butchered remakes of movies I liked.

I saw a commercial for the movie yesterday.

I only saw the '91 series of Land of the Lost, but this looks like an entirely different thing. Just people goofing off in dino-land.

I would rather have them do it as an adventure movie with comedic elements than a straight-up comedy - but I don't know if Will Farrell is up to doing adventure. He typically goes for the oblivious dumb-guy roles, and, unfortunately, it looks like his role in Land of the Lost will be no exception.

Oh, well, maybe Hulu will get the series or something. And if not, well, at least the Star Trek movie is supposed to be good.
The cake used to be a lie like you, but then it took a portal to the deception core.

I have never seen the original show, but I can empathize with how you feel. I similar circumstance for me would be if they made a new live action TMNT movie and cast Jimmy Fallon as Casey Jones.

This movie looks dumb.

Elf is awesome. It will be my new Christmas tradition... Of course, in general I hate Christmas, but it at least gives me SOMETHING to look forward to.

I hated anchorman with a passion.

I'm all about Zoolander

Stranger than Fiction sits in my top 10, I think.

I'm a bit surprised at all the animosity. Animosity! ANIMOSITY! toward Will Ferrel here, too. Yeah, everyone has comics and actors they don't like, but so concentrated in this one thread. Unexpected.

Half of comedy is also delivery in addition to the words themselves. For example...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=haAhdtDmsOw

That skit wouldn't work with many other people. It's his delivery in addition to the writing.

Generally, I feel that Will Ferrel is great at impressions, but not so great at original characters.

Though to be honest, out of all his work, the one I enjoyed most was his role as Harold Crick in Stranger Than Fiction. I would love to see him do more dramatic acting. (I suppose that means that I don't like his original comedy characters)

This. I'm surprised at how many people don't like Will Ferrell, actually. XD It's true his latest stuff hasn't been good, but Anchorman is classic, and his SNL stuff IS brilliant. I also love Elf. And Stranger Than Fiction (even though that's not really a comedy XD). I also liked Bewitched; I thought it was fun. XD And Will Ferrell has been hilarious on talk shows like Conan O'Brien's. XD

As far as whether or not I'll see Land of the Lost, I don't know. I never watched the original show, so the original material is lost on me. We'll see!

Will Ferrel is at his funniest when he's channeling his SNL self. Most of the rest of the time he falls resoundingly flat in my book. Anchorman is almost dangerous hilarious, but it's basically an hour and a half SNL skit. I'm also probably alone in finding him funny playing the straight man to someone else's comedic wisecracking (as of his portrayal of Alex Trebek on Celebrity Jeopardy).

Probably won't plan on seeing this though, mainly because I think watching any comedy in a movie theater is a grossly overrated experience.

Nothing to say on Land of the Lost, just piping up my love for Elf. Haven't seen Stranger than Fiction yet but it's on my list.

Nope! I love his Alex Trebek too. Watching him and "Sean Connery" face off is comedy gold.

"The category is 'Things You Like.' Write down or draw a picture of something you like...And finally, Sean Connery, you wrote...'Alex Trebek.' I...I can't believe it, something you like is me."

Yeah, I must say I've never liked Will Ferrell. Elf was kinda funny, but that's the only movie he's been in that I've sorta kinda liked. Though I haven't seen Anchor man or Talladega Nights, but I still don't like him.

I am completely indifferent when it comes to Will Ferrell. A handful (maybe two, total) of his SNL skits are hilarious, but those are the only times I've ever found him funny. But in his favor, unlike most SNL alum, he is not PAINFULLY unfunny. More of a harmless unfunny. Though to be fair, I never saw Anchorman...but seriously, Elf? That was supposed to be funny? I was praising it as being the saddest Christmas drama ever recorded. Well, I remember crying, anyway.

Oh and Land of the Lost, right. Um. Land of the Lost was never on my list of shows that desperately needed a reboot, but hey, I'm not a high-ranking movie executive. It looks awful, but only a quick, forgettable awful.

I think I'm the wrong demographic for Will Farrel. I can recognize a pattern to what he does, and I can see how someone can think it's funny, but it's never really struck me as entertaining. What I've seen has mostly come off as rude or mean spirited.

It doesn't help that I was hoping for a serious remake of this a few years back.

I don't remember Land of the Lost but I'm not a fan of Will Ferrell. The only movie I've liked with him in it is Stranger Than Fiction. All the others I've seen are just crude, rude, or mean-spirited (and unfunny).

I generally dislike Will Ferrell, although I want to see Stranger Than Fiction. His humor just strikes me as dumb, granted I haven't seen much of his older stuff. I guess he's just one of those people you either like or don't like, XD.

Er, that might be the problem then: Stranger Than Fiction is not a comedy. XD It's a drama (perhaps a dramady) about what happens when a novelist ends up literally (and unwittingly) writing one man's life, and it's a very interesting concept and a good movie. I'd suggest giving it a second go with the mindset that Will Ferrell can act outside of a strictly comedic structure.
