I'm not even going waste money on seeing this movie.

Just about all the reviews that I have seen say its a great movie, if you are planning for a crappy movie night.

One anime news reviewer said this,

In order to cover up the poor storytelling and cheesy dialogue, we've got the film's special-effects budget, which I was amazed at it. They used graphics that I hadn't seen since the early nineties! Sure, the attacks, such as the kamehameha is done adequately, but some of the CG enemies were just laughable. And for the costumes? Well, they seemed to fit much better in an episode of Power Rangers as opposed to this film.

Just from looking at the tv spot I saw, it looks stupid. I want to see the new X-Men movie.

My friends and I went opening night to see the movie and we were split. Four of us enjoyed it, the other four did not.

Oddly enough I thought Dragon Ball Evolution was not a bad movie. I actually found myself really enjoying the movie.

Much like half of my friends, perhaps many people who did not like the film are comparing it too much to the anime. Yes, it is Dragon Ball but the directors were trying to re-amp the show-- to have a different outlook on it. The best example I can relate it to is Tenchi. Although each Tenchi series had similar characters and concepts, the story varied. I honestly believe that if more people went to see the movie with a fresh outlook on DragonBall and tried not to compare every detail to the anime, then more people would enjoy it.

Yes I will admit there are a few cheesy scenes in the movie-- but hey, wasn't the anime the same way?

This film was probably not worth the time it took me to see it, as a film or as an adaptation. I went in with low expectations, but also expecting to be generally amused. Even this was disappointed, though I enjoyed some parts of it.

This film has one major problem: the writing is terrible. It's fairly constantly heavy-handed and the characters often sound awkward. The pacing feels like it's skipping scenes and the story doesn't seem to develop properly. Several characters feel pointless (Bulma, surprisingly, and Yamcha is as superfluous as he was in the original) and there really isn't a lot of character development overall. On the plus side, there was clearly much more effort spent on the special effects than on everything else in this paragraph combined.

What makes me sad about all this was that I had vaguely hoped that a trimmed down film version of Dragonball could actually be better than the source material in some way. I'd like to see superhuman combat without losing the emotional and narrative core of storytelling.

I second what uc pseudonym said....I saw it Tuesday night with my brother and friend and we were the only three in the theater. The movie was really...confusing. The story could have been developed more along with the characters.
