Steampunk

Postby oro! » Fri Nov 21, 2008 5:55 pm

What does everyone think of this as a movement/ideal/genre?

So recently, I have been introduced to a lot of steam and steampunk groups and items. I guess it really started with when I watched Last Exile a couple of months ago. I have used the word "steampunk" in the past, not exactly knowing what it is. Here's an idea: http://etheremporium.pbwiki.com/What%20is%20Steampunk. Basically, it's a meshing of Victorian style, excess gears/steam related items, and a return towards the wonder of crazy creations that you "make" yourself. There are actually extremes on both ends, some emphasizing the punk rather than the steam, and vice versa. I have literally randomly come upon some of its manifestations, such as the webcomic Girl Genius.

I'm even taking an English class next semester that is dealing with steampunk/alternate history. I think that'll be a good time to really look into it more for myself(not to mention fun!). I like the basic idea of it, at the least.

So, I know of at least one person who will know what I'm talking about and probably even correct me, but any other steam fans?

(How would you like a computer like this one to type your response on?)

As you can probably tell I LOVE steampunk. I finally have a way to add technology to all my fantasy worlds! Oh the possibilities...

All you young wippersnappers. I was into Steampunk before it had a name!

Yeah, I love it though. -.Q <--- smiley with a monocle.

I like Steampunk too, but it's just a general sort of like. I can't say I'm crazy for it.

I'ma crazy for it! In fact, if any of you are the D&D type, you ought to give Iron Kingdoms a shot. It's been my favorite setting for ages now. Can't get enough of it!

Very good and funny. The women is quite endowed with the Gainax bounce, and some ironic sensuality at the end, but it is pg-13 if not pg.

I've loved steampunk for awhile now. I didn't even know it was a genre until about 6 months ago. XD

Would Narshe from FFIII be considered Steampunk?

I fell in love with this place. It's a shame you didn't spend more time there. All the pipes sticking out all over the place... the thermal vents... the gears and cogwork... ^_^

You'd probably be shocked to find that there's an entire subculture out there, then. XD

Final Fantasy is generally considered to have steampunk elements at the least, as airships are a pretty large part of it.

The scientific method," Thomas Henry Huxley once wrote, "is nothing but the normal working of the human mind." That is to say, when the mind is working; that is to say further, when it is engaged in corrrecting its mistakes. Taking this point of view, we may conclude that science is not physics, biology, or chemistry—is not even a "subject"—but a moral imperative drawn from a larger narrative whose purpose is to give perspective, balance, and humility to learning.

Yay for discussion!
Technomancer, those pictures make me want to learn how to build steam-powered stuff. Apparently, in real history, a man built a plane that was steam before the Wright brothers built their plane: link
Also apparent is that it's not very practical...but forget that! ;)

For crabfu's concoctions, though, I think that the R2S2 may take the cake(at the very least, it's cool): link

Aannd...I just remembered how to do links, so here's that one from my first post: What is steampunk

To add to the Steampunk links of interest, MTV recently did a report on Steampunk.
Also, Neil Gaiman had a couple things to say about it as well.
Airship Pirates, Mad Scientist.

On a semi-related note, if you live in California and are 21+, Abney Park will be playing on New Years Eve at The Edison. I know I'll be there.

Dr. Steel... Is epic... I mean just plain epic... does he actually have his own PS2 games? O_O... Who comes up with half of this stuff? (There would definitely be some good gag gifts for my parents in there if I had the money :P or if they would actually get it)

Oh my gosh... I kinda figured it was only a matter of time before Dr. Steel surfaced in this topic. XD Truly a man beyond his time. He kinda creeps me out though, what with his strange (atheistic?) standpoint on religion. <.<
