As I Lay Dying

Postby FKeel » Thu May 15, 2008 4:33 pm

Right now, I have gone back to listen to a couple of albums from AS I LAY DYING. Primarily, the "Shadows Are Security" album. In a strange kinda way, AS I LAY DYING to me is like the Underground Hardcore version of the rock band U2.

Much like U2, AILD do not label themselves as a "Christian" band and none of their albums are sold in Christian bookstores, but all of the members are born-again Christians and there are many Christian messages that hit me in the face when I read the lyrics.

Tim Lambesis said in a magazine called Plugged In, "I don't see the difference between a 'Christian' band and a group of believers in a band. I write lyrics about pain, suffering, materialism, and loneliness, but I write about all of these from my perspective as a Christian."

I saw AILD in 2007 when they came to Dallas, TX on their An Ocean Between Us Tour. I got to meet them all after the show and it was a surprise to see how open Tim is with his faith. Since then, I have a huge amount of respect for the band because I know they are trying to make an impact on a culture that has completely misunderstood what Christianity is all about. God bless them.

I'll leave my opinions on U2 out.

Lyrically, this is indeed an excellent band. I will not deny that.
However, for the most part they are just your average generic Metalcore outfit.
"An Ocean Between Us" was quite an improvement over their middle two releases, yes, but overall it's not that outstanding.

Their first CD was really good though in my opinion.
"Beneath the Encasing of Ashes" I believe it was called.

And yeah, they're quite mainstream.
