USB Ports

Postby Kanerou » Wed Mar 26, 2008 6:44 am

Last summer, my optical mouse suddenly stopped working. We figured it was the mouse, and I got a new one. Then, my IPod stopped syncing, yet worked on my mom's computer. Never could figure that one out. Last night, I plugged my new flash drive in to put a document on it, and my computer didn't acknowledge it. Finally, it hit me: there's something wrong with the ports.

I've checked them, and they say they're working fine. My mother uninstalled all of them and restarted the comp, but that didn't fix the problem. And the company that makes my computer will no longer help me if I don't buy some subscription to their service, which I find expensive and incredibly annoying. So...any ideas? It's an Emachines T2642.

Oh yeah - my sound's been out, too (can't even use headphones). Couldn't fix that, either.

Is there another port on the computer you could test with? Sometimes some devices go funny and don't work with a certain port...

If the ports end up not working, you could buy a PCI card with USB ports that you could slot in, and use those ports instead. Like this:

Checked all 4 ports. Someone elsewhere mentioned that, too (a new PCI card).

When was the last time you re-installed the OS? If *that* doesn't solve the problem, it's totally hardware. Do you have a picture of the USB ports and the speaker/mic jacks? If they are on the motherboard, you may need a new computer.

I don't have pics. However, I do have restore disks. :) I've just got to back up everything that I still want.
