Samuel L. Jackson's first foray into the world of anime is here on Thursday! Just thought I'd drop a line.

- Abraham Kuyper

"God the great Creator of all things doth uphold, direct, dispose, and govern all creatures, actions, and things, from the greatest even to the least, by His most wise and holy providence, according to His infallible foreknowledge and the free and immutable counsel of His own will, to the praise of the glory of His wisdom, power, justice, goodness, and mercy."

-John Piper

"The very One from Whom we need to be saved, is the One Who has saved us."

"All of Christian life is ceaseless worship of God the Father, through the mediatorship of God the Son, by the indwelling power of God the Spirit, doing what God commands in Scripture, not doing what God forbids in Scripture, in culturally contextualized ways, for the furtherance of the Gospel, when both gathered for adoration, and scattered for action, in joyous response to God's glorious grace."
- Mark Driscoll

"Believers do not pray with the view of informing God about things unknown to Him, or of exciting Him to do His duty, or of urging Him as though He were reluctant. On the contrary, they pray in order that they may arouse themselves to seek Him, that they may exercise their faith in meditating on His promises, that they may relieve themselves from their anxieties by pouring them into His bosom; in a word, that they may declare that from Him alone they hope and expect, both for themselves and for others, all good things."
- Martin Luther

"I have to tell you first that I am ready to die. I have put my affairs in order. Your supreme weapon is killing. My supreme weapon is dying, because when you kill me, people all over Romania will read my books and believe on the God that I preach - even more than they do now."

I saw a clip from this when Samuel L. Jackson was on Leno several days ago. Doesn't look like something I'll be too interested in, but whatever. *shrugs*

Looks like they'll run the first couple at 11 and 11:30 and then probably rerun the first one at 12:30 which is right against FMA on AS.

You're just saying that because it looks like Samurai Champloo with "Samurai Jackson. See, SAMUel Jackson. SAMUrai. I love it."

I'm sick of these -badword-'n afros!

No, I'm saying that because I'm really not interested in it. Samurai Champloo didn't come to mind until someone mentioned it this afternoon.

Just finished watching the first episode on Spike TV. That was about the coolest thing I've ever watched.

I can't really recommend it to most people on CAA. Here's a breakdown of content:

Language: Actually not as bad as most people expected. They said a lot of "freaking," and a couple of instances of "son of a" without a word at the end. One instance of the d-word, one of the a-word, and one of the s-word.

Sexual content: When one of the bad guys is talking, a girl in a bikini is present. It shows her rear for a few seconds, and a shot of her chest pressed up against him.

Violence: This is, by far, the biggest in terms of content. The first scene shows the major bad guy of the series cutting off another character's head. And when I say "shows," I mean it. Also a scene of Afro Samurai killing about 20-30 people by cutting off various limbs. Lots of blood.

So yeah. While I can't really completely recommend this, I loved it, I thought it was a blast, and I'm definitely going to be following this series.

In the trailer he said the F word and the N word so it's aparantly cleaner than I thought.

I checked Spike TV last night and CSI was on when Afro should've been on.

I'm confused.

According to our Sunday Tv supplement it is supposed to air at 11-Midnight(first two episodes)and then 12:30 a.m.(rerun of first episode?).Those being Pacific
time zone.
I see this has a means of SPIKE trying to resurrect their old adult cartoon block of a few years ago(as I think I mentioned before).
I think if Jackson's character is the one that says the N word then it would explain how they would get away with having it in the dialog.

They showed it on Spike TV webpage.

I think they change those words, so that it was a little cleaner. I think they had to edit some of the bad words in it and we will see an uncut dvd later.

Hm. I had no idea what to think about this series and wasn't motivated enough until this thread made me check up on it. I suppose I might look into it, as five episodes is a minimal time investment.

You're probably right. I'm almost sure I'll end up writing a review on this, but I'll wait for the DVD version (since I will most assuredly buy it on DVD).

Spike is apparently running this with a TV-MA for language and violence (per their website). So while there's some stuff that they probably won't get away with because of being a basic cable network, Afro Samurai will probably run almost uncut.
Theme Scripture: Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. (Galatians 5:1)

And a verse for all us single folks: Do we have no right to take along a believing wife, as do also the other apostles, the brothers of the Lord, and Cephas? (1 Corinthians 9:5)

I saw the ads for it yesterday during Voyager.Seems to me they're going to go head on against G4 for the late night crowd.Though IMHO I believe SPIKE will end up winning.

That's what I'm thinking, since they don't have to comply with FCC regulations the violence and language will probably be identical between the TV and DVD versions. Still, I'll play it safe and the official review I'll submit will be the DVD version, because I have a feeling they might throw in some nudity or something just to raise interest in the DVD.

Right... cable networks don't have to deal with the FCC, but they do still have standards and practices departments. So they may end up leaving some stuff on the cutting room floor, as Adult Swim has done with quite a bit of their MA anime.

Of course Spike has lighter S&P restrictions than AS does. For one thing, they don't share their channel space with a kids' channel during the day. Also Spike has been known to run some violent movies such as The Godfather uncut, during primetime. And like you mentioned, they may try to have more potentially objectionable content on the DVDs to boost sales.

So I could see it going either way, but if anything does get cut, I don't expect it to be too hacked up.

Yeah, I agree with that, outside of the four main characters, the "throwaway" characters really didn't have very good voice acting. I'm hoping it'll improve though.

I liked the amount of detail in the fight scenes (in terms of movement, not flying body particles) but little else of the show seems very interesting. Someone should have reminded GONZO that colors other than black, brown, and red exist.

Saw ads for it all over the Internet and watched a trailer. Homegrown Japanese animation or not, seems like this series was made almost exclusively for Samuel L. Jackson and his snake-fearing fans. Cardboard cut-out of the greatness that was Samurai Champloo, with a twist of The Boondocks for flavor. Think I'll pass.

Yes, I realize I'm being judgemental and close-minded, and I'm fine with that.

At least Samurai Champloo has a plot and the characters are defined as to who they are.
The last show I remember Kelly Hu was on was the one with the fat Chinese martial artist.
