one shinigami that seriously stands out in my opinion is ichimaru gin. the way he's always smiling, even when the situation gets more intense, it's scary. i truly believe that ichimaru gin is also one of the strongest as we have never seen him go all out either...

uc pseudonym wrote:About Yamamoto's strength: it seems to me that though Nanao likely isn't very strong, she would be a decent judge of reiatsu levels. She says that even with two Captains vs Yamamoto she's not sure they could win, and though I think she's slightly overestimating him due to the fact that he almost wiped her out with aura alone, it seems obvious to me that he's at about the two of them put together.

As we've seen, reiatsu translates directly to strength and often to speed. Given how old Yamamoto is (and the fact that he trained basically all the other Captains) we can also assume that he is highly skilled at least in swordplay and movement. All Captains have Bankai and his sword has already been declared to have the highest offensive power, so we know he's dangerous on that account.

Overall, I think it's pretty clear that he's one of the top shinigami in Bleach. However, I hesitate to compare him to Aizen because we've never seen either of them go all out. But Aizen has proven that he has high levels of kidou and other arts that Yamamoto hasn't, so we don't know if this versitality would make a different.
We've haven't seen any of these Captains bankai either. I'm incredibly curious as to what kind of bankai Aizen has. As far as cheap abilities, I think Aizen's shikai is top of the list.

I want to see Yamamoto face off with Aizen! In the upcoming war they keep talking about, I bet you anything we'll finally get to see Yamamoto fight.

Chances are we'll get to see everyone fight, which means that an hour or so of real time could take several years of manga releases. But it will be fun to see the mysterious characters go all out. I'm particularly curious to see the Bankais of Urahara and Gin.

Aizen is my other big curiosity. I love how his Shikai is so ridiculously powerful, but yet it breaks the rules of shonen by being only functional, not an attack. What I really hope is that whoever fights him has to do something clever to deal with it (as opposed to him not using it or there being some "it doesn't work because of x" thing, which would be lame). And I'm curious to see if his Bankai will be similar or entirely different.

I forgot about Urahara; his bankai I want to see more then any other, with the possible exception of Aizen. I'm still curious as to what all Urahara's shikai does, since it has the rather vague ability to manipulate blood.

jinn: we see when Ginn fights "whitey chan" that he is scared of him and his "running" away shows that he was indeed afraid of the vice- captain so that shows that either Ginn is actualy really weak and cheated into captain level (most likely) or the vice- captain chick is really more powerfull than most of the actual captains.

Samurai: I believe (I could be wrong) that he says in episode 62 that he is actualy using his Bankai constantly and that is what makes people think they are really seeing Aizen. but on the other hand why would the people he killed to gain control have been in control in the first place if not because of power and if thats the case and Aizen did kill them all I too would be quite intrigued to see how powerfull Ichigo will have to become to defeat Aizen.

He says he's using his shikai constantly, not his bankai. I'm not sure if it will be Ichigo that will defeat him or not, I don't want him to be, but common shonen sense says otherwise.

i'm afraid do not believe i know who "whitey chan" is (or cannot remember), but i cannot tell if the "whitey chan" you are talking about is a guy. as you make him out to be a male near the beginning of your post, but at the end, you refer to this vice-captain as a female.

"whitey chan" is the captain that Aizen acuses in his letter of trying to take control. His vice-captain, who is whitey chan's sister, is the one who later ends up getting drunk with Gin's vice-captain. but sooner after the two vice-captains go off and fight eachother.

For everyone's reference, "whitey-chan" is Captain Hitsugaya. He's the one who looks like a kid with white hair and an ice-element sword.

Hm? I'm not sure exactly what you mean. Gin fought Hitsugaya and wasn't taking him all that seriously. Also, he was doing it solely as a distraction for the plan.

ah, i see. so you believe that ichimaru gin is weak because he ran away from fight against captain hitsugaya. first of all, as uc pseudonym already said, he wasn't taking the fight seriously at all, gin, that is. second, he never revealed any signs of being afraid, as he was smiling the entire battle. maybe he didn't want to kill hitsugaya at the moment. maybe he didn't feel like fighting because there was no reason to at that time. maybe he ran away because he didn't feel like taking on, both hitsugaya AND hitsugaya's vice-captain at the same time. also, maybe he didn't want to kill hitsugaya's vice-captain since they DID grow up together and have known each other for quite a while. he revealed this as he, aizen, and that other blind captain departed from the soul society, when he apologized to hitsugaya's vice-captain. or maybe, he was simply kidding. these are all various reasons, and none of them prove that ichimaru gin is a weak shinigami, cheated into the captain level...

uc: there was a point when Hitsugaya released his shikai that Ginn's smile went away and he seemed to almost shake in fear and then out of shear stupidity tried to make Hitsugaya too mad to control his own soul slayer.

Jinn: I never said Ginn was weak per say so much as not as powerful as Hitsugaya and his vice-captain. As for the smile. I think thats just how his face is so to interpret how he is fealing you have to look into his eyes which i believe in that instance show he is afraid of Hitsugaya and his vice-captain. If he weren't afraid then Gin could have simply imobolized the two and killed Aizen's vice-captain like he was trying to do when Hitsugaya intervened.

but you did say that gin was weak and cheated into the level of captain. in this way, you are basically saying that gin does not deserve to be a captain because of his lack of strength. not being strong enough to be in the level of a captain is just as weak as not being strong enough to take on both hitsugaya and his vice-captain. so, you are, in fact saying that gin was weak so much as to be not as powerful as hitsugaya and his vice-captain.

gin never reveals any signs of being scared. he may be surprised at the sudden appearance of hitsugaya's vice-captain but he never acts worried. he knew that it wasn't wise to take on both hitsugaya and his vice-captain as one of his arms was already frozen, putting him at a disadvantage. he was probably making the better decision in choosing to avoid a fight. as i said in my other post, gin might've not have wanted to fight (or kill) hitsugaya's vice-captain and thus, did not proceed in his attack. just because ichimaru gin decides that he does not want to take on both hitsugaya and hitsugaya's vice-captain, it does not mean that he is a weak shinigami, cheated into the level of captain.

I personally think it has more to do with Gin's old relationship with Matsumoto... we've recieved several hints that he isn't completely heartless. It has been too long since I saw the scene currently being discussed so I can't address it directly, but on the subject of Gin's strength I offer this argument:

Gin is one of the three rogue Captains. The main villains of shonen manga are never weak. Furthermore, even Tousen (the blind Captain) has been shown to be extremely strong in fairly recent manga chapters. He seemed pretty weak fighting against Kenpachi and revealed what seem to be all his tricks. I have no doubt that when Gin next appears in Bleach he will be a dangerous opponent.

so you say that just because ichimaru gin was scared (as you believe he was), that he is a weak shinigami not worthy of the title captain? if i were gin, i would be scared too. first of all, hitsugaya is going berserk and unleashing his bankai on me. second of all, one of my arms have already been injured due to the hitsugaya's chain and ice. and third, even if i get past hitsugaya, i'd still have to take on his vice-captain. also, i'm sure that some other person, in the soul society, would probably notice all the commotion from hitsugaya's massive ice dragon. thus, more people would come to see what's going on, and therefore, witness ichimaru gin's actions. avoiding this fight was not so much an act of cowardice, as you believe it to be, but an act of wise thinking.

I was not really trying to say he wasn't worthy of the title captain. I was just saying there were others more worthy of it. Its posible that Gin cheated to become captain after all we don't know how long he and Aizen had been planning this whole thing.

isn't it possible that any of the captains in the soul society could've cheated to become a captain? why does ichimaru gin have to be singled out if there's not even evidence showing that he's actually not that strong?

On the contrary, they pray in order that they may arouse themselves to seek Him, that they may exercise their faith in meditating on His promises, that they may relieve themselves from their anxieties by pouring them into His bosom; in a word, that they may declare that from Him alone they hope and expect, both for themselves and for others, all good things."
- Martin Luther

"I have to tell you first that I am ready to die. I have put my affairs in order. Your supreme weapon is killing. My supreme weapon is dying, because when you kill me, people all over Romania will read my books and believe on the God that I preach - even more than they do now."
- Dr. Joseph Ton, the exiled Romanian pastor (quoted by James Montgomery Boice)

"The best prayer I ever prayed had enough sin in it to condemn the whole world."
- John Bunyan

"If the Christian has lost sight of Calvary, that shows that he has lost his way."

i still don't see how he was cheated into being a captain, or any signs of him being cheated into the level of captain. i still don't understand how him running away from hitsugaya and matsumoto is a sign of cowardice and not simply a smart battle tactic. and i REALLY do not understand how you could call ichimaru gin WEAK when you've never even seen him fight!!

"All of Christian life is ceaseless worship of God the Father, through the mediatorship of God the Son, by the indwelling power of God the Spirit, doing what God commands in Scripture, not doing what God forbids in Scripture, in culturally contextualized ways, for the furtherance of the Gospel, when both gathered for adoration, and scattered for action, in joyous response to God's glorious grace."

This particular tangent has probably gone on long enough; I feel as though it isn't covering any new ground at this point. So let's leave the subject of Gin's strength aside for now and discuss the strongest shinigami in Bleach in general (or leave the thread alone if we have nothing more to say).
